I tell my wife that all of the time. What goes in must come out. Time is a

Although I was younger when the doctors found the connection, I was 43 when
my cancer surgery and another 20 years before the Jpouch was made. My
surgeon said that I was the oldest one he had done this surgery on as most,
this age, the cancer had progressed too far.
James, I was a nurse working in a hospital before and after my colon cancer
surgery. I struggled with my feelings. Although a nurse, I never accepted
the fact that cancer could be all through me. Two years later I had another
surgery, this time for a blockage from scar tissue. My surgeon fully
expected to find more cancer but he found only adhesions that were causing
the blockage. I know I place a lot of my help in prayer, faith and knowing
I had help from Another than my surgeon. This was important to me.
Another thing is to never give up. During this time I took care of another
man who had recently had the same surgery. (No Jpouch, just part of his
colon removed,) and he was worried. He and a brother, both in their 70's
and neither married lived together and only a lady came weekly to help clean
up for them. They had planned a trip but now he told me he could not go.
"Why not? I asked.
"Well because I have cancer. So and so told me that now I can not travel
there."
"Sure you can, I assured him.
When he left the two men were making plans for this trip. This trip was
only about 300 miles, the farthest either had ever been away from their
place.
Just under three months later this man returned to the hospital. Every test
ran showed there was no cancer. The doctor could find no problem as to his
decline.
When I asked his doctor he replied, "I think he has given up."
I went to his room and asked the man a few questions. He was weak but
seemed glad to have me stop in.
"So, have you taken that trip?"
"No, we can not go."
Why?" I demanded.
"Well you know, I had cancer."
"So what does that matter? You can still go. It will be good to take that
trip."
"No, I can't go." Then he told me how his house keeper had told him that
under no way should he try this trip. After all, he had cancer. This man
had gone into a state of depression and I was helpless to pull him out.
One careless person had taken away from him all hope and none of us could
rebuild this hope. Although all tests showed he was free from cancer, he
had just given up. He refused to live, refused any help and yes, he died a
week later.
I state this only to show that one must keep fighting. Even if still with
cancer it is proved the one who fights it will live longer. But we who do
not have cancer must still fight. It is so easy for a nagging fear to crop
up. Especially in the early months/years.
My suggestion is simple: make sure your doctor keeps track of you and
anything that may concern you. Have any tests run regularly. With your
colon gone, with the cancer still only in one place, with the lymph nodes
all negative, my suggestion is to live like any one else. Take care of
yourself, eat good, exercise, take in plenty of water and be thankful for
today. Sure, there will be days that you feel that "worry," and this is
natural. But do not let it run your life.
Hope this helps. I know the fear, but I also know that today is going to be
another good day.
Hang in there.
How is your pouch working? Any trouble.
Blessings and I hope you have a good weekend.

That will make a difference to what tests you have. If you had your colon
removed and a Jpouch made my thoughts would be that you have little to fear
and your doctor may want to do yearly scoping. If you still have some colon
my guess is to have repeat colonoscopies in around 6 months and if remains
clean yearly. But these must be as your surgeon/doctor orders. But praise
God it sounds like your cancer had not spread at all and this is good.
I too have FAP. My first surgery in 1965 when they found polyps and removed
2/3 of my colon. I had regular check ups but was found to have colon cancer

hi mike ..thank you for being so thoughtful in asking various
questions..iwill try to remember them and i do clean mself usually with a very
soft tissue
paper (ones recommended on this site)and some water on tissue so i think it is
not irritating so it seems to me..i think my irritation is definitely
inside.even my doctor has remarked throughtout all visits that i took good care
and
skin looked good...i do as a habit use a pad and if soreness appears inside
close
to opening i use illex recommended by my doctor and vaseoline over it..the
illex literally forms a rubbery barrier on skin for healing and protecting..you
need not apply it each time..

for breakfast i either have some eggs and a bagel or bread and maybe oatmeal
too..lately i tried cascade yoghurt recommended by ernie with a banana cut up
in it and a piece of buttered bread..i do not drink any coffee or soft driinks
only water and on occassion in evening have cammimile tea...

i keep a journal every day ..i note what meds,suppliments,vitamins i take
that day and when,i note the time and b.m`s and record if their is anything
happening like pain/discomfort/burning and degree, and the foods i eat that day
in
order of eating them..my range is usually 6 to 10..but a good day is 6 or
7..this is with at least three good meals...if i hit 9 or 10 times it is usually
because i may have something going on like soreness or irritation/burning..

one question that you may be able to help with is the food question..if you
eat something that does not work for you how long after do you know it was a
particular food that might have caused you some distress and what kind of
distress..what i mean by that is if you ate say like 9 in morning then maybe1 in
afternoon and maybe again at 4p.m and then start having burning or irritation on
a b.m at 6pm. could it be something from earier in day you ate even if prior
to that you went to bathroom before and it was okay????wow i just reread that
and i hope you understand it!! maybe it is better said this way you eat some
yoghurt in morning then have a good first b.m (for me that means no pain or
irritation) but after some other meals and other b.m`s you have discomfort...can
it still be that yoghurt from early on..

thank you mike..

My wife buys Smart Water by the case at Sam's Club and
loves it. I'm a good husband and let her get what she
wants. But before you go and spend a lot of money on
Smart Water, the amount of electrolytes in it is
negligible and I think only put in for taste. If you
read the label, they basically take regular water and
distill it, making it "pure" and since distilled water
has no taste they add minerals in for taste only not
for any nutrition reason. But if you like the taste
go for it. As my mother used to say "It couldn't
hurt".

I can eat; green and wax bean, peas, corn on the cob, carrots, iceberg
lettuce, tomatoes. I have been eating coleslaw occasionally as well. I
also eat popcorn a few kernels at a time too. I would say that you are
doing quite well, Tom. It just takes time for all of to get there. Hang
in there.

Hi Sandra ; I eat peas quite often. I had corn last night for about the
third time in two months.I am 10-month post takedown. I have been eating
peas and greenbeans fairly often with no problems. I make sure I chew very
well and my wife is trying to get to slow down my eating also since I have
had a bad habit of eating too fast.We have carrots all the time and I have
eaten yellow and zuccini squash several times. I eat salad but mostly
iceberg or romaine lettuce and cucumbers along with some chopped up peppers
and also with artichoke hearts .I've had eggplant on a white (sauceless)
pizza and that was no problem. I had eggplant parmagian two weeks ago ( just
a little bit ) but took off the skin and the only trouble was the sauce
since I also had stuffed shells and meatball in sauce.
I find that baby spinach is ok for me to eat but I cannot eat full leaf
spinach or broccoli rabe or cabbage without some trouble. I have eaten the
full leaf spinach but cut off the stem part and cut up the leafy part very
small. I eat a banana almost every day and also at least one yogurt a day
for pro-biotics. I can eat pealed apple slices, melons like cantalope and
honeydew are good as is watermelon for me. I have had pears and peaches with
no problem except that I have to peal them first so you lose a lot of the
nutrients.
Hope you continue to get better and take a chance now and then trying to add
something new to your diet. I tried one at a time and sometimes had trouble
at first but no trouble if given another chance at a later date.
Stay well...............................Tom

Karima,

Loved reading your story. I think it's great that you're sharing your
experiences with us all. I'm sorry you're having trouble with the burning.
You ate popcorn...Brave woman! I am a chicken sh** and have not tried too
many questionable foods. I LOVE cashews and corn on the cob, but are afraid
to eat them. I live by the Chesapeake Bay and this time of year we eat crabs
caught from our own pots. Nothing is better than an ear of sweet corn with
steamed crabs and a beer!

I'm only 4 months post TD surgery so maybe next summer I can try the corn.
Has anyone else eaten corn or peas? Just wondering about those shelled
veggies.

mitch -

no you're not. great... er... GREAT! you are so
right... it is scarey. needless to say i totally
agree with you. i personally find those
over-obsessive negative worry worts very energy
draining. like parasites... just suck your energy.
and do they do anything with advice they ask for? if
not feeding their drama want no part of you and
advice. and i get very tired from it sometimes...
especially when not on top of my game. but belive
can't pull punches and have to say what needs to be
said... and if get flack - so be it. but you said it
guy. hurray. later david

No, they aren't, Karima. I think they're the same as Vitamin Water - 125

Tom,

thanks so much for sharing your food experiences. I am looking forward to
adding to my repertoire. I absolutely LOVE peas and corn. I'll have to try
each soon and just chew well. It's good to know that there's light at the
end of the tunnel. :)

Hi Sandra ; I eat peas quite often. I had corn last night for about the third
time in two months.I am 10-month post takedown. I have been eating peas and
greenbeans fairly often with no problems. I make sure I chew very well and my
wife is trying to get to slow down my eating also since I have had a bad habit
of eating too fast.We have carrots all the time and I have eaten yellow and
zuccini squash several times. I eat salad but mostly iceberg or romaine lettuce
and cucumbers along with some chopped up peppers and also with artichoke hearts
.I've had eggplant on a white (sauceless) pizza and that was no problem. I had
eggplant parmagian two weeks ago ( just a little bit ) but took off the skin and
the only trouble was the sauce since I also had stuffed shells and meatball in
sauce.
I find that baby spinach is ok for me to eat but I cannot eat full leaf
spinach or broccoli rabe or cabbage without some trouble. I have eaten the full
leaf spinach but cut off the stem part and cut up the leafy part very small. I
eat a banana almost every day and also at least one yogurt a day for
pro-biotics. I can eat pealed apple slices, melons like cantalope and honeydew
are good as is watermelon for me. I have had pears and peaches with no problem
except that I have to peal them first so you lose a lot of the nutrients.
Hope you continue to get better and take a chance now and then trying to
add something new to your diet.

Just wondering about those shelled
veggies.

So maybe a permanent ileostomy is a better solution.

There isn't a person in the world who can convince me that medicine, and the
PRACTICE of such, is an art. Trial and error applies mostly to science.

Not looking to beat a dead horse (pardon the expression) but this site can only
be impactful if we provide facts. Speculation will not help people. If your
problems are so persistant after so much time then possibly a second opinion is
in order. Obsessing over the same things will only cause damage, mental and
physical. Sorry if I am being harsh but mental attitude is directly related to
physical well being. Those who are struggling with obsessive thoughts should
seek help amd maybe meds. If your already on meds then possibly you have built
tolerance and need to change or increase. Those who worry about everything, what
they eat, drink, pass etc, need to change their thinking. I'm done for now.

mitch i think what she meant is that there are things the doctors just do not
have a scientific magic bullet for and like it or not the operation we had is
not the end all for lots of people..they just do not have a full
understanding of alot of whys..they just try different things that are
available to
them..so is it somewhat of an art of how they each go about
it..perhaps....rebecca

Hi James,
Although I was younger when the doctors found the connection, I was 43 when
my cancer surgery and another 20 years before the Jpouch was made. My
surgeon said that I was the oldest one he had done this surgery on as most,
this age, the cancer had progressed too far.
Ernie

thanks for your insight......I had j-pouch surgery about 10 months ago i was
47 at the time so my fap show up real late ........if you have any further
insights or the group it would be appreciated!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ernest Jones <theolcrow@...> wrote: Hi James and welcome.
Do I understand that you still do have your colon or
is your colon all removed?
That will make a difference to what tests you have. If you had your colon
removed and a Jpouch made my thoughts would be that you have little to fear
and your doctor may want to do yearly scoping. If you still have some colon
my guess is to have repeat colonoscopies in around 6 months and if remains
clean yearly. But these must be as your surgeon/doctor orders. But praise
God it sounds like your cancer had not spread at all and this is good.
I too have FAP. My first surgery in 1965 when they found polyps and removed
2/3 of my colon. I had regular check ups but was found to have colon cancer
in 1980. At that time I think 13 out of 20 some lymph nodes showed cancer.
But I have been cancer free. During the 20 years up to 1999 I had
sigmoidoscopies ranging from every 3 months to yearly. These were the old
rigid ones, much worse than the scoping today. In August of 1999 the exam
showed an explosion of polyps and I was ordered to repeat the test in 6
months which showed still more, thus the Jpouch was made in April 2000.
Again, welcome to this list. Be looking for more from you and have a good
day.

had a form of fap had 1 polyp go to early stage cancer ,26 lymph nodes taken
out all clean thank God,...What follow up test do you recomend being done
annually?

I will not even go into how I felt during my first post op year. Maybe I
should say the first two years. But time did show that life got better.
Maybe we won't get clear off all medications. Actually this does not bother
me any more. Mainly is the desire to just feel good.
You will make it also. But we do still need to have a medical person,
doctor or surgeon who still wants to keep track of us and to help us know
all is fine.

yes ernie i agree with everything you are saying...i think all of us want
not
to use meds ..infact that was one of my expectations about having this
surgery..no more meds!! so needless to say a year down the road it stresses
me
greatly to be on meds and makes me fearful i will continue to be on meds and
even
more fearful not getting to a point where even with meds i can get a handle
on it all... !but i do not think i am alone on this..i need more of your
spirit
as well as mitch and mike and others...rebecca

P.S.? Life Water by Sobe is basically the same thing as Vitamin Water, but they
have some different fruit flavor blends that are really good.? I've found them
at K-Mart and Weis Markets so far.?

Hi Laura.? Vitamin Water is 50 calories for 8 ounces, so if you drink the whole
20 oz. bottle, it's 125 (and I always do).? I've found Smart Water at my grocery
store, but that's the only place so far.? I don't know where you're located, but
if you have a Giant grocery store near you, I know they carry it for sure.? You
might want to try CVS or Rite Aid, too.

Now there is a difference between Vitamin Water and Smart Water. I usually drink
vitamin water b/c its easy to find. Tastes great but does have the calories (50
I think). Formula 50 is one type of the vitamin water but I think that Smart
water is different.

I am interested in trying it. I hope that I can find it at our local grocery. I
don't have Trader Joes around me anymore:-(

It's a flavored water with Vitamins and minerals added, no carb or citic
acid, it's great!! I LOVE it! It's rather new but can find it and smart and
final, traders joes, and some supermarkets in water section. Great flavor,
smart water is another drink of spring water that " is processed differently"
this is also newish. . . . this is in most supermarkets (out here in CA). : )

acid, it's great!! I LOVE it! It's rather new but can find it and smart and
final, traders joes, and some supermarkets in water section. Great flavor,
smart water is another drink of spring water that " is processed differently"
this is also newish. . . . this is in most supermarkets (out here in CA). : )

thanks for your insight......I had j-pouch surgery about 10 months ago i was 47
at the time so my fap show up real late ........if you have any further insights
or the group it would be appreciated!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ernest Jones <theolcrow@...> wrote: Hi James and welcome. Do I
understand that you still do have your colon or
is your colon all removed?
Be looking for more from you and have a good
day.
Ernie

You will make it also. But we do still need to have a medical person,

rebecca,

  Questions:
What do you clean your butt with after a BM - at home and when not at home?
What do you use to wash your butt during shower or bath?
Do you where a pad in you underware for leakage?
Do you put a mositure barrier cream between your checks after a BM?
Do you put TP between your butt checks to absorb leakage after a BM?
What do yo eat for Breakfast?
  Do you drink coffee?
  Do you drink Soda?
Do yo keep a journal and actually count all your BMs or do you go from
  memory?
What is a good day and a bad day for the # of BMs you have?

Sorry to be so graphic but if we know some of this, then maybe we can offer
  more suggestions.

  God Bless, mike u

Subject: [J-Pouch Support] feeling very SAD TONIGHT

reading your e-mails kevin karina ernie and wondering after having j-pouch
for al long as you have how do you know if the burning butt is from a food
  vs.
bacteria like pouchitis or cuffitis or bacteria in general???

clearly if you have alot of diahrea going lots of times to bathroom more
  than
usual and maybe blood(cuffitis i guess) it is easy to figure out but
  barring
that how the dickens do you all keep sane and know what to do??

past few days i realize i have been very down and tonight i realized i was
actually feeling amxiety again..been having that on and off throughout
  this
year since j-pouch surgery...and i do have a past history of depression
  ,which
was very well controlled for many years before colitus..so i may be
  starting
from a weaker position..i also have a 31 byear old son who is presently
  living
with us because 10 months ago his HEALTH BECAME IN DANGER..HE HAS WHAT
  APPEARS
TO BE LEAKY GUT..his situation has been amazingly difficult..the two of us
have been having a rough time but i am his mother and i feel sometimes
  guilty
because i need to be there for him..my husband has been dealing with the
  both of
  us!!!

i am better than i was clearly from the first 8 months and instead of
getting more up mentally because of progress AFTER THE SURGERYi seem to be
  falling
apart again..i guess i just do not do well with so much uncertainty.. and
feeling so out of control..am i such a wuz???sometimes like now i just get
  so
tired trying to figure it all out..i just feel so ready to not have to
  think
about my butt anymore..i ofcourse hoped that was what this operation
  meant..and
maybe it still does but then i feel maybe it will not...

sorry to vent all of this because clearly you guys on this site are here
because you have not had smooth saILING EITHER with this surgery..does
  anyone
else feel like they loose it sometimes and how do you just deal with the
  hand you
have been dealt???i cannot control how i am going to eventually end up
  after
this surgery but i have to find something that gets me through..i have
meditated but need to look into getting more help with that..like a
  spiritual teacher
i think...i have tried therapy and still do that....

hope no ones minds my writing all this...rebecca

It's a flavored water with Vitamins and minerals added, no carb or citic
acid, it's great!! I LOVE it! It's rather new but can find it and smart and
final, traders joes, and some supermarkets in water section. Great flavor,
smart water is another drink of spring water that " is processed differently"
this is also newish. . . . this is in most supermarkets (out here in CA). : )
