Insulin resistance, and other associated conditions such as Syndrome X, Diabetes and PCOS are problems within the endocrine system. Hypertension and heart disease develop over time. Recent evidence links insulin resistance to obesity, poor lipid storage, higher androgens in women (as seen in polycystic ovarian syndrome), etc. People with this syndrome particularly have problems with reactive hypoglycaemia, in which the blood glucose levels drop after eating meals of certain combinations of food. In non-diabetics, this may result from high insulin production in an attempt to take care of the blood sugar. Because of this, individuals are often prescribed medicine and/or diet to help even out the glucose and insulin levels.
Because insulin resistance is often missed as a diagnosis and health care providers have only recently been looking at how insulin resistance contributes to so many serious health conditions, this forum was established to make it easier to find support and information. No one should take any content of this list as medical advice, and anyone who suspects that he or she has insulin resistance is urged to see a health care provider who can give more information on his or her own individual status.
