Last year we had a wasp nest in the wall of our house, which I didn't
worry about as never really got stressed about wasps, how things change.
The 1st time I was stung was on the hand it was no big deal, just a
swollen hand for a few days, unfortunately the 2nd time was a
different story.
We had just been out to get some money as we were about to leave to go
on holiday, when on the way to our front door I wasp landed on my head
and started to sting me, so I brushed it away.
Not thinking anything more about it, I went to have a shower, which
probably didn't help because that is when it started to hit me with a
swelling on the side of my head and my gums started to feel strange.
A lot of red blotches appeared on my body, which we later found were
hives, and so my wife rang NHS direct and then emergency services at
least I think it was like that.
I was sitting on the floor as felt very tired and the next thing I
remember is being led to the sofa by a paramedic who gave me an
injection and I was violently sick.
Next the Ambulance arrived and I was able to walk to it and it made a
short journey to the Hospital, though I had to have another injection
in the ambulance as was still being sick.
I spent a while in the A+E with one relapse when the hives returned,
but when things calmed down, I was taken to a observation ward where I
stayed for about 3 hours, and then I was let go.
I have to say I had it easy compared to my wife, who had all the
trauma, with the children crying upstairs and me collapsed on the
floor and not being able to move me.
We managed to get away for our Holiday, though my wife got more
stressed than me if we saw any wasps.
And so today I am a 4 epipen carrier ( consultant thinks I may have to
give myself 3 injections) and anti histamines and steroid tablets
which i have to take everywhere with me as well as one anti-hist in
morning and one at night ( though must confess not being taking them
this winter).
Today I started my Immunotherapy injections and am not looking forward
to my 3 year course.
I was started on a very week dose, the consultant said it was a 100th
of what they normally start at, well had no problems with the 1st dose
of venom, so I now have a weekly visit to Guildford for my treatment.
