Re: [insectstings] Happy New Year

Hi Maggie and Roz!

And a happy new year to you all too - it is definitely going to be a challenging one for most of us, I guess, with all the gloomy financial news.  Still maybe all the political changes in the US will make a positive difference for us all wherever we may live.

If it is of any interest the level of sting activity in the UK at least was the lowest it has been since I launched my website seven years ago -  the absolute number of visitors were at their highest in 2008  but after doing lots of mathematical calculations it would appear that once you take out the growth in the internet, activity was in real terms actually lower. Go visit www.waspwatch.co.uk if you are interested!

On the one hand it is a good thing because there is a lower risk of being stung, on the other hand it is bad because this lower activity also reflects a drop in our bee populations due to both fungus infections and mite infestations and we need the bees in our ecology.

So definitely a mixed blessing for those who are severely allergic.

Yes, Roz, I have Friday marked in the diary and so very much hope that you find out Joe has grown out of the allergy!!

Do let us know the news because it would be a warm tonic for us all as we shiver in the snow here in the south east of the UK!

Best wishes

David

Hi Maggie and 'All'

Yes it IS cold..woke up to snow this morning...unusual for West Sussex, and annoying for all the children who are back to school today!!!

Joe has a day in hospital (St Mary's) to look forward to on Friday. They are going to "challenge" him by testing with wasp venom. He's not really looking forward to it, understandably.

Happy New Year to you all. May it be sting-free! (but a little warmer)

Roz
