I haven't posted in quite a while. Our 6 year old son started
immunotherapy around May for wasps and hornets. Build up to
maintenance dosage was uneventful. Over the summer he got stung twice
by wasps – yes, I agree that it does seem that wasps sense and attack
allergic people. My wife was right there in each case. No epipen
necessary, just liquid antihistamine and close monitoring thereafter.
It was heart wrenching to hear him say "I'm still breathing" to himself
every few breaths. The second sting was also treated with liquid
antihistamine and much less stressful for all involved. Each sting had
a fair amount of local swelling, but no hives or other systemic
reaction. Judging by the minor reations to the stings, it appears the
immunotherapy is working.
We are scheduled to have another set of allergy tests in January. Is
it common to have yearly allergy tests for kids? – I haven't read about
anyone else mentioning it.
