We live in Houston, and as a result of Hurricane Ike, we now have a lot of marsh mosquitoes (our son is mildly allergic, with local but significant swelling). But we haven't seen any bees or wasps since the storm. As for fireants, our son's big allergy, the mounds were washed away by Ike, but they are everywhere again and huge. We too can see them from the car as we drive. Our yard is ok (treated) but our walks around the neighborhood are just like yours Stacie -- we see the mounds in almost every yard. Our son (now 3 years old) starts immunotherapy next Monday for fireants. He is to take a claritin tab before each injection to keep the swelling/ adverse reaction risk down. Fingers crossed.
Our home was damaged in the hurricane, but it is habitable. We have gutted rooms, with open space to the attic, and I worry about fireants or wasps (our son's lesser sting allergy) getting into the house. We are living life carefully, with the gutted rooms closed off and sealed with plastic. Again, fingers crossed nothing gets in.
Thanks Stacie for sharing your son's experience with immunotherapy. We are really looking foward to getting this process started and hope for equally good results!

I haven't seen a lot of bees around where we live (south carolina, usa), but have noticed some wasps lately. My son isn't allergic to bee's thankfully but if highly allergic to fireants. I haven't noticed too many of them over the summer , but have seen them EVERYWHERE in the last 2 weeks. While going on a walk the other day in our neighborhood i noticed that we were almost the only ones with out large fireant beds in the yard. I have even noticed them while driving down the road.
We have also been going through the venom immunotherapy for 3 weeks now and it is going well. So far Myles has not had any adverse reactions (not even swelling at the injection site). We have been extremely happy with this. My husband thinks this is due to our son being put on singular (along with his allegra he takes 2x daily). We have even noticed that when he is bit by mosquitoes that the bite doesn't swell up near as bad as it used too.
