Re: [insectstings] Skin Testing Reactions

OK Lisa, well you should really go with your allergist's advice and anaphylactic reactions to skin prick tests are very rare.

Having said that a RAST blood test is also a means of determining which venom your son is allergic to and that carries no risk at all so I would question your allergist why they are going the skin prick test route instead of RAST.  See my web page http://www.insectstings.co.uk/insect-sting-allergy-tests.shtml for further information.

In the UK generally speaking we do not do skin prick testing for insect venom - food, moulds, pollens, yes.  Insects, no.

Insects skin prick testing is more unusual because insects sting using a "skin prick" and therefore the method of introduction into the body is very similar.

I know in the US it is much more common and I have actually never heard or read of a systemic reaction to a skin prick venom test so I do think you are pretty safe however.

Hope that helps!

David

Subject: [insectstings] Skin Testing Reactions

Hello everyone. I hope everyone had an insect free 4th of July. I know
I sure was going out of my mind with my son running around watching the
fireworks and we were only on the back porch. I have a question about
possible reactions to skin testing. My son has an appointment this
Friday to have the skin testing done for fire ants and yellow jackets.
His allergist has assured me that they can handle any emergencies and I
am sure they can. I am just the type of person that if I know in
advance what could happen I handle things better. I have always been a
patient and calm person in an emergency until last year when my son was
bit. Now I am defineatly not that way. I have been reading all the past
posts but I do not think I have come across anyone with reactions to
the skin testing. Thank you for your help.

Have a great day!
~Lisa
