I first came across Epipens about 8 years ago when I took my son and
his friend David out for the day. David has a severe nut allergy and
it was the first time he had been away from his parents. She
explained in advance what to do and I asked another adult Mum who was
coming with me if she wanted to know too - no way! I was quite firmly
told it was 'my' problem if I wanted to invite such a kid along.
The knowledge certainly helped me when I was stung for the first time
as it slowly dawned on me what was happening - it gave me chance to
ring my GP and ask for advice. So the expression of what goes around
comes around is true.
If David had an attack now and after administering the antihistamine
he wasn't responding I would not hesitate in using the epipen and
ringing for an ambulance. This is the same procedure I have for
myself - although I admit I would find it easier to inject someone
else .....
I think people don't want the responsibility which suprised me
particularly as a parent you are sagging under it anyway!
Our allergy is tricky especially for a child and my heart goes out to
Roz as you must feel terribly anxious yet you have no control. At
least with the nut allergy David used to bring his own lunch so we
could all relax!
I am off on Monday night for a snowboard taster session with my
youngest - aged 13. I can ski but being in a houseful of males they
want to snowboard ...... not sure at all ......
Hadn't notice a lack of honeybees here last year ... will watch out
this year ....

fact there is an interesting study out at the moment which
illustrates this very well - if you go to the website it is the last
piece of news in the left hand column.

our family, in particular my son. He would be able to have the
freedom to go off to ski-school without the constant 'epipen' hanging
over him. A chance to make new friends and be 'normal'. Lets face it,
he finds it tough to be in the cricket team in the summer as mum
(with epipen)has to go along too! You'd be surprised ( or not) how
many adults are not happy to be left in charge of an epipen! I don't
mind at all, but my son is getting to the age when Mum's presence
can be an embarrassment! We will certainly go again as, despite the
wasp sighting, it was very relaxing.
