Shelley,

My biggest symptoms are breast tenderness, food aversions, uterine
pulling and cramping and fatigue. How one can have these for three
weeks them have them completely disappear is beyond me. With all of
my five pregnancies I have always been one to experience symptoms
withing the first week of preg. I know nothing about what it is like
to experience symptoms after 8 or 9 weeks....I have never been that
far-

I know for a fact that parvo can really hurt women of reproductive age... please be careful to stay away from it.  I had never even heard of it, until about 6 mos or so after I had it.  They thought I had Lyme disease or TB at first...took them forever to finally figure out what I had.  We think this is what triggered all my autoimmune problems that have led to the loss of our precious babies.

Potentially deadly infection during pregnancy often has no symptoms

University of Pittsburgh
August 27, 20032003 AUG 27 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- Clinical and basic science findings of several studies are being presented by University of Pittsburgh and Magee-Women's Research Institute scientists at a meeting of the Infectious Diseases Society for Obstetrics and Gynecology (IDSOG).

Potentially deadly parvovirus infection during pregnancy often has no symptoms, reported Hyagriv Simhan, MD, assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. In healthy adults, parvovirus is more of a nuisance, and can cause flu-like symptoms that are similar to the common cold. In children, it is more likely to be characterized by a "slapped face" appearing rash on the cheeks. But for the developing fetus, parvovirus infection can be a contributing factor in heart failure and death. This is contrary to the little research previously published on the subject, which indicates that a majority of women have symptoms.

Simhan and his colleagues studied cases of 25 pregnant women found to be infected with parvovirus B19 between 1998 and 2001 at Magee-Womens Hospital of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Of these, only 16% exhibited any symptoms themselves, said Simhan, who also is an assistant investigator at the Magee-Womens Research Institute. The vast majority of women were diagnosed because their older, school-age children showed signs of infection. In the study group, there were three cases (12%) of fetal heart failure and four cases (16%) of fetal death.

"So far this year, we have seen 15 cases of parvovirus infection in pregnant women," said Simhan. "This is a more common problem than many people realize."

Because there is no vaccine available, current practice involves counseling and close monitoring of high-risk patients, which includes anyone who has school-age children and those who work with children such as teachers and day care providers. This article was prepared by Biotech Week editors from staff and other reports.

Hey Cheryl,

I haven't been checking msgs. this weekend--have been painting.
What fun!!!??

Anyway, I think your TH1 looks a tad elevated, but the IVIg hasn't
had time to work yet. I'm sure DB will guide you. Usually, the
levels are drawn 5-7 days after the IVIg.
Let us know what he recommends.
Debbie

Thanks Christine. It helps.

If it wasn't for everyone's posts here about these kind of symptoms,
I probably wouldn't think anything of it. I usually don't have real
bad cramps or cramps in the middle of my cycle, so something is
probably going on in there. Remicade hasn't seemed to help, in
fact, I think it may be part of the culprit. I go tomorrow to have
NK Assay & Cytokines drawn.

I'm sorry Poetabook, but have you contacted DB? Maybe you just need
an IVIg dose. Maybe all hope isn't lost. At least run these
numbers by him. Immune patients do start off slowly sometimes----
I've heard DB say this. Good luck.

Glad that you're finally at the end. I can only imagine what a
nervous wreck and worry-wort I will be when we get pregnant. The
battle seems unending against those terrible killer cells. I don't
think the normal population realizes what it takes for us immune
patients to get pregnant, then to carry.

Why did DB change his interpretation of your lab tests?

Good luck thru the final home stretch and many congrats!!

Hi Jen,

I'm sorry for what you are going thru. I have had early preg.
symptom too of breast tenderness at approx. 4-5 weeks, then it
gradually disappeared. Unfortunately, I miscarried at about 7
weeks. It's not over, until it's over, but I do understand your
thoughts. Hoping that it is different for you this time.

Hi Karen,

From several things that you list in your history, it sounds like
you may have immune issues to me. Yes, bloodwork can show elevated
NK cells and other possible immune issues. If you have had a D&C in
the past, this tissue can be sent to DB for testing. I did this and
it showed NK cells, so I didn't have to have the endo. biopsy done.
IVIg is available in the U.S. and always has been to my knowledge.
Maybe you are thinking of LIT. It isn't currently available in the
U.S., but can be obtained in Mexico & London. Different insurances
cover different things and it depends on the diagnosis codes too.
IVIg won't be covered if submitted under the diagnosis code of
infertility. Good luck. Debbie

Jen,

One thing I was thinking of last night that 'might' make you feel
better is that : I remember having strong symptoms with each of my
four pg's that I unfortunately m/c, but on my fifth one - successful
one - with immune treatment, I had NO symptoms until around 10 weeks.
No fatigue - and I was working 50-60 hour weeks (Physical Therapist)
teaching exercise classes and everything.
In the very beginning, I was convinced I was not pg since I had NO
symptoms, then I was worried because my 'slight' breast tenderness
went away, so I increased my progesterone a little. The 'slight'
tenderness came on and off for a few weeks. That was it though.
Everything was fine. Maybe you are getting far enough along
with the pg that this is new territory and your body is relaxing a
bit (ie: the uterine cramping is settling down). During those first
few weeks, when I had no symptoms to speak of, I remember bugging my
OB/Gyn and worrying about it constantly. She told me that most of her
patients who have been pg as many times as I had (and as you have),
don't have much in terms of symptoms by the time they conceive their
fifth, ect. She had some patients have severe morning sickness with
their first pg's and by the time the 4th or 5th time going through
the first trimester, they had no symptoms.

When I concieved #6 last summer, I had absolutely no idea I was pg
until I was 4 days late and took a test for the heck of it. I had not
one symptom. It was an 'accidental' conception and I was not on
immune treatments, so unfortunately we lost it before I could get an
IVIg set up, but it proved to me that I won't be able to rely on my
symptom patterns any longer.

Maybe Jane can shed some light on whether she noticed some symptom
changes after a certain # of pg's ? I don't know if there is anything
scientific about it, but maybe the body just doesn't react as
strongly when it's been pg so many times.

I am hoping and praying for you!

Hi All,

Sorry it has taken me so long to post. Just got back from the hopital
yesterday. Just now catching up with all the messages!

Yes it happened!

Jonathon Alexander Reed was born 2:22 pm Wednesday August 27th, 7
lbs 13.6 oz, 20 and 1/2 inches long, healthy and nomal in every way.

As many of you know I to be induced due to returning low amniotic
fuid and a less than perfect biophysical profile.. Unfortunately my
cervix, was still " unripe" (not yet ready for delivery) on Tuesday
the 26th so sat through most of the day waiting for the Cervadil to
ripen the cervix. Most of you thought I was delivering Tuesday but
actually I was doing nothing!~

Then 4am Wednesday cervix finally began to look ripe, so they started
the IV Pitocin to begin the contractions. Contractions took a while
to kick in but when they did, everything happened fast! .By 1 pm
Wedesday afternoon my cervix had reached 3 cm dilated then
everything progressed very very quickly (common for ladies who have
had many kids), only 1 and 1/2 hours later I felt that pressure of a
head coming down, Jonathan Alexander Reed was born soon afterwards at
2:22pm, full term and healthy no meconium or signs of stress from the
fast delivery at all (something I have had in past deliveries)..

As I have had so many kids, am I am at much higher risk of post
partum hemorrhage. So the hospital kept me in in a couple more days
to watch for bleeding clotting issues. Ironically, because of
thrombophila issues, am also at a higher risk of developing blood
clots, as well. To keep a balance between these issues, the had me on
Pitocin to contract the uterus and blood thinners to keep from
developing post partum DVT (one of the reasons I am back from the
hospital so late).

My history just for perspective:: I am DQ Alpha 4.1,4.1, with 4.1
match with my DH, +APA, +ANA, antibodies to hormones and
neurotransmitters, high TH1 TH2 in pregnancy, elevated NK issues,
homozygus MTHFR mutation, low serotonin, high CD19+5+ in the past, 6
live births, then 5 miscarriages before 2 successful Beer baby
pregnancies (with full immune treatment) before this one.

For this pregnancy, I used multiple IVIGs ( about 10 in all, one
every 3 weeks), Lovenox throughout pregnancy, baby aspirin,
dexamethasone to 15 weeks, fish oil 8g a day throughout pregnancy,
Folgard vitamins.

I battled recurrent bleeding episodes the first trimester (4 to 12
weeks), a low lying placenta, NK flare at 10 weeks, TH1 TH2 flare at
34 weeks, low amniotic fluid at 24 weeks and 34 weeks, slight growth
issues at 30 weeks, all these issues later corrected themselves due
to frequent monitoring/testing and frequent IVIG (I believe).

I will be sending my baby's placenta to Dr Beers PSL lab to compare
this pregnancy with my past Beer baby pregnancies, We shall see what
comes of this.

Will probably be offline be a while as my family settles down. But
surely in the next week or two I will be catchng up with all the
messages. I have alot of catching up to do. I think about so many of
you each and every day..hope the ongoing pregnancies are going
well.

Just remember as you look at these pictures of me and Jonathon, my
case is not an easy one, I have severe category 5 iimune issues, a
history of body stiffness and pain, history of autoimmune coiltis,
migraines, irregular cycles, 5 miscarriages in my past. I feel if
my immune system can have success, success can happen for many of you
too. I can't emphasize this enough. Never lose sight of your dreams .
Dr Beer's medicine may work miracles for you.

Above I have attached some pictures of Jonathan in his first few
days. Copies have been added to the group" photos" so Yaho cannot
delete them from the message archives (as they have been doing
lately).

I thank you all for your wonderful messages and well wishes. It has
meant more than you know. Fortunately working on the computer during
the night is very easy for me to do (not much else to do at 3 am
feedings!) so vow to catch up with everyone's messages soon!

Jen,
So sorry that your PG symptoms have disappeared, and that you think
this is over. I will keep praying for a miracle until you find out
something for sure on Thursday. I remember freaking out when my
nausea disappeared for a day, but then it came back, and then I had
some bleeding and thought it was over then too. Now I am 10 weeks,
and still not very hopeful, there's just that constant, looming
doubt. I hope there is still a chance for this baby. We are all
here for you,
Michele

Hi Karen,

I'm sorry to hear about your losses. Based on your background, it
sure sounds like you may be dealing with immune issues. You may find
that IVF isn't even needed if you can deal with any immune problems
that might exist. As for your questions.....

1. Will the immune blood work tell me enough to know if my NK cells
are causing the problem or is it necessary to have the biopsy done?
(just had one last month and would like to avoid it if possible)
A COMPLETE IMMUNE WORKUP WILL TELL YOU IF YOU HAVE ELEVATED NKS.
THERE ARE ONLY A FEW LABS IN THE COUNTRY THAT RUN THE TESTS TO THE
RIGHT LEVEL OF SENSITIVITY. A TYPICAL SET OF TESTS DONE BY A LOCAL
OR NATIONAL LAB, (LIKE QUEST OR LABCORP), WILL NOT GIVE YOU ACCURATE
RESULTS.

Has anyone gone thru the Genetics & IVF institute, in the Washington
DC area, for immune issues?
I RECENTLY MOVED FROM THE DC AREA. THE ONLY IMMUNE-FRIENDLY RE I
FOUND IN THE AREA WAS DR. RAFAT ABBASI AT MID-ATLANTIC FERTILITY
CENTER. SHE IS VERY, VERY SUPPORTIVE OF IMMUNE TESTING & TREATMENT
AND I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND HER. AFTER YOUR 1ST CONSULT WITH HER,
YOU WILL PROBABLY WORK MORE WITH HER NURSE PRACTITIONER THAN DIRECTLY
WITH HER, BUT THEY'RE VERY EASY TO WORK WITH.

Is IVIg now available in the U.S.? (I think there were some problems
getting treatment before)
I SAW THAT SOMEONE ELSE ALREADY ANSWERED THIS FOR YOU.....LIT IS
WHAT'S NOT AVAILABLE. IVIG IS AVAILABLE.....THOUGH VERY EXPENSIVE.
HOPEFULLY IT WILL BE COVERED UNDER YOUR INSURANCE IF YOU NEED IT SOME
DAY.

I have really good insurance; does anyone's insurance cover the tests
& treatment?
MY INSURANCE, (A BLUE CROSS BLUE SHIELD PPO), COVERS A LOT OF IT.
THEY'VE COVERED ALL OF MY TESTING, BECAUSE THE LAB DR BEER WORKS
WITH....FINCH UNIVERSITY LAB IN CHICAGO....PARTICIPATES WITH BC/BS.
IT DIDN'T COVER MY LIT, SINCE I WENT TO MEXICO TO DO IT. AND, THE
MEDICAL SIDE OF MY COVERAGE WOULDN'T PAY FOR THE IVIG, BUT I DID GET
IT COVERED UNDER MY DRUG PLAN....I JUST HAVE TO PAY FOR THE NURSE
MYSELF TO ADMINISTER IT.

Good luck in finding answers!

Robin

I'm so sorry it's not looking good. I was really hoping that the
Wobenzym was helping this time. I'll still be keeping my fingers
crossed for a miracle with your next beta.

After everything we've been through, I think we know our bodies all
too well. I'm so sorry to hear that your symptoms have disappeared.
I'll be praying for a miracle at your US.

Hi! :)

When you had your initial bloodwork done for Dr. Beer did you have to
go to one of his offices or did you RE office draw the blood and then
send it to his lab? I need to talk to my RE and see how cooperative
she is going to be with all this and I want to be as upfront with her
as possible with how much her office will be involved. Thanks!

Hi Sarah, my ob's nurse drew the blood for me and we shipped it to Finch (the lab in Chicago).  DB is still using Finch by the way.  There are some labs that you can have done locally and then send DB the results.  I know the ones that are specific to his lab are the NK assay and the Cytokine tests.  The rest can be done at other labs.  If insurance is a concern for you.  It may be easier to get coverage.
Best of luck
GC

Not doubling, but I've never had one even get this far before, so I'm
amazed. Our goal now is not viable pregnancy, but rather for something
to get to a point where my RE can identify location and obtain tissue
for testing. I go for a scan on Thursday.
