Still Alive

Hello all,

I am writing this from the Palm and planning on copying and pasting it
later. The short story is that I am alive and relatively well.

Lapis and I arrived here a week before Marty did. Marty packed a bunch
and stored as much as he could in storage or the truck and the rest was
abandoned. Don (my ex) helped the last couple of days.

My bronchitis has cleared up. Just when I made my appointment with a new
OB/GYN I developed something nasty combining vomiting and many trips to
the toilet. When I saw the doc yesterday he told me I have the stomache
flu. Whoopee :-(

I have dropped about 5 pounds in the last week and am a bit dehydrated.
Marty has gained several pounds. He overdid it, but is recovering nicely
now. He slept about 18 hours a day at first but now is only sleeping
about 12. We found out that before his surgery he weighed 98 pounds.
Now he weighs about 108. Not bad considering.

The VA received the claim on 10 December. Today they said it will be
another 3 or 4 weeks. That will make it more like the end of January -
IF it isn't delayed even more. If it weren't for Don we'd really be up a
creek.

So we have a place to stay. Food. Shelter and remain at the whims of
Uncle Sam.

We just got the computer set up, so I am just getting back on the ball
there. I am still recovering and am very tired. I am also more than a
little depressed. But alll things considered I oughten't be.

Saturnalia and Christmas went pretty well. We managed presents for all 9
days and the children were satiated.

Also we heard the baby's pulse yesterday. 154 which is good. I will go
for the genetic tests and ultrasounds next week so I will know officially
if I am right about Rose being Rose or being wrong and Rose being
Christopher. LOL.

Hello All, I would also like to wish everybody a Merry Christmas and a safe,
and happy New Year. I had my colon taken out July 2002, because it was
severely perforated form ulcerative colitis. I have learned to adapt to a
new way of life. I learned to take care of my stoma. The biggest fact I
learned is that you have to take Acidophilus to replace the flora that was
in the colon, and that you have to take an anti gas medicine to reduce gas.
If you don't reduce the gas you can blow your bag off and also suffer severe
intestinal pain from trapped gas. I learned this when I went to the doctor
with severe intestinal pain. I am glad that there are much needed support
groups like this to rely on.

Hey guys,

We went to see the GI docs today -- and FINALLY learned EXACTLY what they
did LOL. They took about a foot and a half of Martin's smal bowel, his
apendix and about three inches of colon. When the intestine heals (it
was stretched WAY out of shape!!) they will reattach the ends. The
Crohn's is no more --- for now. It is now time for "the wait" -- which
we all know can be 6 weeks, 6 years or 60 years - we are hoping for 160
years, personally, Marty will handle it better after he's been dead of
old age a couple of decades <G>. They will begin him on Remicade after
the reattachment as a preventitave measure.

Our fingers are crossed BIG TIME!!!!! Marty's recovery is way ahead of
schedule -- he surprised everyone!! We are hoping that the temporary
homless situation he is about to enter (because of the hospital stay and
all we are going to be evicted in about 8 days -- Marty is sending me and
Lapis down to LA County until the disability comes, then we can be
reunited) that he doesn't get some sort of relapse. As it is hehas a
cold, which ALWAYS turn into bronchitis (I am just now getting over it
myself). But I think he's strong enough to handle it alright.

Thanks for all of the support. Stanley (the Stoma) is working out just
fine, but we are looking forward to saying goodbye to him in 3 to 6
months. He is there now Marty needs him and when his job is done, he can
go. And if that day ever comes where Stanley has to return permanantly,
we are ready and can handle it. Lapis is fascinated with it and has
learned as much as we have -- including what stoma means in Greek and
everything. He's been GREAT!!! We are very proud of our little
man!!!!!!!

I willbe down in LA county for the holidays :-( -- and my ex (who I will
be staying with -- him and my daughter) has a broken modem. If I can get
him to buy a new one I can get back online -- if not -- HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!
   Whatever you practice!!

Hi all,

I just wanted to let you know that I had my J Pouch made on 12/4 and
just returned home from the hospital on 12/17. There were some
complications but it does seem that all is well now. They hooked me
all up, so I did not wake-up with my ileostomy bag. It has been a
rather weird adjustment for me even though I only had my bag 8
months. I am still "looking" to empty my bag every time I go to the
bathroom :) I have a long road ahead of me for recovery--I have to
go to the bathroom 20-30 times a day. Needless to say, I have a
very sore bottom! But, the Dr. assures me it will slow down with
every day until I get to the normal 6-8 per day.

For now, I am just glad to be out of the hospital, especially this
time of year. I will continue to lurk here and give advice if I
can. I appreciate all of your excellent advice over the past 8
months. God bless, Becky

Thanks Dawn!!

My computer is fine, but Lapis (my son) and I are going to stay with my
ex come the weekend. Marty will look for housing here and I will look
for it there. Also it helps my daughter, who will need someone to take
care of her as her usual babysitter will be on extended vacation. Then
we will move into our new home and can then rest and recoperate.

My ex's computer needs a new modem, and I don't know how long it will be
before I can get back online.

Hi Crystal,
I am sorry it has taken me so long to get back in touch with you but,
Christmas and this computer's problems, really has me pretty busy. My computer
is acting worse every single day. Please know if you stop hearing from me that,
I am trying to get back to you, the computer is just not cooperating. Anyway, I
hope that the medication helps you to feel better. Marty sounds like such a
wonderful person. I am so very sorry that his cousin did that to him and the
rest of his "family." He sounds like he has a nice family with you and your son
though. It would be great if the rest of them would treat him the way they
should but it is nice that he has you. I hope you are feeling better very soon.

Thanks Dawn,

I went to the doctor myself to see how all the stress has effected the
baby. I also had a "cold". The cold turns out to be bronchitis. Marty
is out getting MY medication now. He says I never left his side except
to get stuff for HIM and now it's HIS turn to take care of me. If I am
not careful I could get even sicker. We've had enough hospitals to last
us some time, thanks. And so I am "grounded" <G>.

He just found out a little more about his "family". His cousin SWORE he
couldn't help us -- even though he owes marty 1200 dollars. A friend
(one of the true ones) told Marty yesterday that this cousin won over
3,000 dollars gambling in Reno over the weekend!!! And the cousin swears
he's broke!!! That's about IT!!! MArty is DONE with his family. Even
his son, who SWORE he'd come to visit him over the weekend and didn't
show, didn't call, no smoke signals, no psychic messages, nothing!!!!!
The boy is 15 -- the least he could have done is call. sigh Mary is
VERY dissapointed!!!!

But we're together. We've been having sort of a delayed reaction to
everything. We have cried together. Marty saying that if it weren't for
me he'd be dead on the floor -- his family not even thinking of him for
weeks or longer before they MAY get in touch. Most of these people don't
even know marty and I got married!!! Which is why when he needed the
emergency surgery he said he wouldn't go ANYWHERE without me and Lapis
there!! And he didn't ask for anyone BUT me and Lapis, because WE are
the true faithful to him. The ones who REALLY love him. We are his
family. Period.

Anyway, I am about ready to lay down again.

NHS patients will be able to start looking at their own medical records on the
Internet within the next two years, the Department of Health has said.

Health Secretary John Reid announced that by 2010, every patient in England -
around 50 million people - would have an individual NHS Care Record as part of a
multi-billion pound IT deal.

Richard Granger, director general of NHS IT, said patients would start to feel
the benefits of the system well before then, with many being able to look at
their own records by 2005.

The 10-year contract, worth £620 million, to set up and run the NHS Care Records
Service has been awarded to BT.

Two further contracts - to provide systems to access and use the service and IT
support at a local level - have been awarded to BT in the London region and
Accenture in the North East.

Each of these 10-year contracts is worth around £1 billion, with further local
contracts to be awarded by the end of the year.

Health officials say the system will allow for the first time information about
patients to be mobile, meaning that professionals across a wide range of
organisations can access records which were previously kept in one place.

The national record will include a summary of all important information on a
patient from different health providers, such as GPs and hospitals, which will
be gathered from existing computer systems or paper records.

The DoH said that the complex system would connect more than 30,000 GPs and 270
acute, community and mental health NHS trusts.

Worries about confidentiality have also been looked at, with patients able
either to opt out of the service or ask that certain information be contained in
a "sealed envelope" so only those they want to see it have access.

Mornin Dawn!!

Actually Martin got his retaining sutures removed and we got to talk
to the VA rep who told us we can do what we need to do in order to
survive until the bennies come through. And so I contacted a social
worker I have been in contact with for a while and he will be
helping us.

As for my health -- I'm a happy medicated mama now LOL. Still sick,
but I can't afford to really get the rest I need right now --
medicating is the next best thing, sigh.

Martin had a few more lessons from his family again. It looks like
the "Circle of Friends" has gotten smaller and smaller. But WE are
his family and a damn good one at that.

Hi JB,

Well, it sound like you are already doing the very best job anyone could do
to be the best husband, Father and Friend. You are doing just fine. I don't
know much but, I do believe this, when the time comes to tell your son about
your bag, you will know when it is and you will handle everything just fine.

Hi Crystal,

I do pray and I will say a prayer that whatever is suppose to happen will
for you, your husband and your little boy. Good luck and I will miss talking to
you while you are gone.

Sincerely, Dawn :)

Hello all,

Today is day 3 of our 3 day notice. What follows then is a 5 day notice
that we would have to fight in court. The VA disability hasn't come
through yet and we are rapidly running out of options. I'm getting
pretty nervous and so is Marty. It's 3:30am and neither of us is
sleeping.

I am going to go back to no-mail on all of my groups after I write and
send this. I have added many of the addresses from my Juno account to
the web-based email address book. I will try and keep everyone updated
on what happens. I want to thank everyone for the moral support we've
gotten. We WILL survive -- know this!!

What we are hoping for now is that Lagal Aid can tie this case up until
the VA money comes through. The sad part seems to be that it's alright
to toss a disabled American Veteran, his pregnant wife and their 4.5 year
old out. Legal Aid says we will almost certainly lose our case and wind
up homeless. THAT I can live with. Marty will be calling his godfather
in the morning and asking for storage space for the few things we REALY
want to keep if we can (computers, printer, CD's, books, clothes, one of
the TV's and a little of the furniture). That way when we DO have the
housing we don't have to start over COMPLETELY.

I will try and keep in touch as best I can. I didn't have time to
recharge my virtual calling card, but I have some money to buy one. I'll
do that in the morning. I will be contacting the social worker we've
been working with first thing and see what our options are now.
Basically we're going to be a bit too busy to reply to emails just now.

In trying to keep the positive thoughts going -- we are married now so if
we wind up in a shelter we will be together as a family!! That's
important to me. Marty can recover almost anywhere, technically. We're
stressed, but we're strong. Lapis is a resiliant kid. As long as he has
us he'll be OK. And we have support.

Whatever you do -- pray, light incense, meditate -- please do so for us
now. Your god of choice doesn't matter to us -- I'm one who has always
believed that thinking of prayer is prayer itself.

I will try and check this email account when I can. I will also have the
tungsten, but it may be easier to find a library with internet access
than a WiFi location. If you email us at this address I will do all I
can to get back to you as soon as I can.

Thanks Dawn!!!

We shall have to meet on a picket line someday LOL. It would be
interesting to say the least LOL. My editor loves controversy (he SWEARS
it's because he's a flaming fairy -- argueably yat another handicap LOL)
and would call everyone from ABC to the Weather Channel to come watch us
LOL.

A nurse in the hospital who was one of the most ignorant people I've ever
had the displeasure of meeting was suggesting to Martin that he stop his
whining. We compared the pain of what he was going through to labor and
she immediately snapped "I've had 3 children, the pain isn't THAT bad."
Martin asked her when she'd been in labor for 4 months with no more than
an hour or two -- sometimes a whole day without giving birth. Shut her
up quite nicely. Well, Martin has had his cesarian <G>. The BAD news??
Now I can't complain about MY 2 cesarians BUT have his complete sympathy
in May when our child is born by cesarian LOL.

I'll get GREAT Mother's Day presents from him now LOL

Hey JB

If the kids at my daughters school start teasing her because her parent's
are not Christian, should we convert? What about when they tease her
because she is interracial -- having a white father and a black mother?
The children teased her because she calls me Mater and her father Pater
(Latin words for Mother and Father). My ex-husband suggested the
teachers put an end to it before he got mad and hired an attorney. The
ignorance of children can often be traced directly to their caretakers --
sometimes the parents and sometimes the day care workers and teachers.
It is not natural for children to be mean and tease -- that is,
unfortunately, a learned trait.

Because of being practioners of the Religio Romana and having a white
father and black mother my children face ridicule throughout life. They
aren't the "right" race or the "right" religion. My daughter is with her
father and has come to me because the kids teased her because of using
Pater. I explained to her that some kids simply don't understand. She
has also been teased for being schooled throughout life by me.

My son is homeschooled and so being teased by other kids at school isn't
much of an issue for us. But he knows what happened to his "Dad". Both
Dad and Pater have explained it to him as something wonderful. If the
kids at school can't handle the fact that Dad poops in a bag then I would
actually feel sorry for these children and wonder seriously at their
parents.

You asked if it was unfair of you t set your son up "like that". Again I
bring up more "usual" situations that parents can avoid in setting up
their children. I could have been with a black man instead of loving a
white one in order to make my kids "fit in". I could have converted to
Christianity to help my children "fit in". I took a LOT of flack for not
having my son circumcised because "the kids might tease". I could have
remained in a miserable relationship so my kids wouldn't be teased for
having a step-family. The list goes on and on.

You haven't "set your son up" -- you saved your life. My biological
mother died when I was young and the children tease about THAT as well --
and it hurts MUCH worse than almost any other teasing the kids could do.
Perhaps you can offer your son replies to the kids teasing. The kids
will say "Your Dad poops in a bag. How GROSS!" and your son could say.
"It's better than having him dead I think." Four isn't too young to
explain what happened to Dad. Words like resection and ileostomy may be
a bit much depending on the child, but coming from an interracial pagan
whose alcoholic mother drank herself to death there are worse lessons for
the kid to learn. He COULD be forced to endure the insensitive little
monsters asking him about the funeral.

If he has self-esteem now then it shouldn't be effected by stupid
ignorant classmates. I don't know if there is one, but I would LOVE to
see the children being able to communicate just like we adults do. Does
your son write little notes? My son is working on his drawing --
actually he's a far better typist. If the kids at school aren't too
bright might I suggest a peer for him? It's a silly little Pagan
interracial boy who speaks a dozen Latin words and would fit into school
like a square peg in a round hole. But his step-father ALSO poops in a
bag. And considering Lapis isn't taking to pooping in the potty -- I
think Lapis is even a little jealous <VBG>.

Lapis has an email address with Juno. I like it because it disallows
attachments (this old version anyway) of any sort. Right now our entire
home situation is a bit up in the air, so I don't know if a snail mail
address would be the best idea. I dn't want to confuse anyone by having
the email addy changing and changing. My son and yours have at least ONE
thing in common. Alliances have been forged with less, eh?

Hi Crystal,

You are very right, a lot of people in this world do not know how to treat
people like us. It is terribly frustrating. However, it is up to us, people who
are in wheelchairs, to try to make people understand that we are just like
everyone else because problems are all very relative and people will only see
their own problems because that is all they know of. They don't have any idea
what others are going through just like I cannot possibly understand what it
feels like to have a hurt foot because I cannot feel my feet. You see, we are
the ones that have to smile and try and show people that we can be good and kind
and normal. Anyway, it has been really nice getting to know you on here. I
wish you and your husband a lot of luck with all of these illeostomy issues.
Sincerely, Dawn
