Joanne, I have only had a perm ileostomy for eight months but I might
be able to help. Seems that the gas slowed quite a bit once my system
got use to the bag AND I avoid all foods that gave me gas prior to
surgery (ie: onions, beans). You will lose a lot of fluid with an
ileostomy so drink, drink, drink! Water is what you need so drink a
lot of it! As with the odor, that also seemed to disappear after my
system leveled out. There are certain foods that produce a much
stronger odor than others... Fish is something that I love but I
avoid because the odor is so bad for me. I have heard of individuals
putting a small piece of toilet tissue soaked in minty mouthwash in
the bottom of their bag to help control odor. I have not tried that
but it's an idea. (An interesting note... sometimes we "think" we
smell an odor because the ostomy is new. If you have someone who
helps you with your ostomy ask them if they notice the odor at
particular times in the day.)
