Hi Brian,
Sorry to hear you have been having difficulty. While I have not had
any kidney problems since my surgery, I was warned by the dietician
following my surgery that kidney problems can occur with an ileostomy
if your fluid intake is too low, or if you have a particularily
watery output from your ostomy. What happens is that you body is
actually elimating most of the water through the ostomy rather than
through the kidneys, and this can cause kidney or bladder infections,
or cause your kidneys to function poorly overall.
Try upping your fluid intake, especialy if you notice your output is
watery. Fruit juices, especially cranberry, help as well. You should
drink at least 8 - 10 glasses of water or juice a day, and
caffeinated beverages should be limited to less than 3 a day, as
these can cause dehydration.
Good luck to you!
Sarah
