Subject: Cole is here!
Hi Rachel, Just a note to let you know that I had my baby. I didn't end up with my VBAC but I did achieve my goal of going into labor on my own and laboring without an epidural. Here's the story, in a nutshell: I was working on Friday 3/21 when I felt what I thought was my water breaking. I called my doctor on my lunch break and he had me go to Suburban to get checked. Turns out, it was just my mucous plug (gross!) but the contractions started almost immediately after it came out and they were coming strong and fast so I was admitted to the hospital. I was barely 1 cm dilated. Around 10:30 p.m. they gave me an Ambien to help me sleep but it only gave me about an hour's worth of rest. From the time I got to the hospital, the contractions were off the charts and coming every two minutes. I spent all night on the birthing ball! That thing really helped with the pain. :-) They checked me around 10 a.m. the next day and I was still at 1 cm and the baby was still up high. I agreed to go ahead and have the repeat c-section. I was pretty disappointed that I didn't have my VBAC but once the surgery was underway, they found meconium in the fluid, the cord wrapped around baby's neck a couple of times and my uterus had healed very thinly around the scarring from my first c-section. A coworker who had a baby a few days before mine was born had to send her baby to another hospital b/c she had inhaled some meconium and got an infection. That baby is still in the hospital today, as far as I know. So in the end I'm glad that I ended up with a healthy baby boy. My recovery has been an absolute breeze compared to my first. I feel great and was up showering and shaving my legs the next day (I was mortified that I hadn't shaved the day that I went into labor, LOL!). Baby is doing great, and breastfeeding is going well, too. I'll attach a pic. His name is Cole Phillip Wahler, he was 7 lbs. 1 oz and 19.5 inches long, born at 11:50 a.m. March 22. He was so tiny -- I still am surprised that he didn't just slide out on his own! And for future reference, the nurses at Suburban were GREAT. All were very supportive of my VBAC goal and one even came to check up on me a couple days later b/c her shift had ended before I had the baby. Anyway, sorry this is so long. Thanks again for all your help during my pregnancy. :-) -Laura ____________________________________________________________________________________ You rock.
