Dear Alli
Thank you for writing. The IBS Singles group has very little activity, but
if two people can talk, share experiences, make friendship, whatever... It's
better than not participating at all. I find the only time people understand
how IBS can be debilitating is when they experience a bout of the runs or
cramps and they just barely reach a restroom or something. Unfortunately, and I
suppose this is human nature, like a tooth ache that has been relieved, they
forget that experience and resume the regular statements like "You're too
nervous", "Oh, you never go out. Why don't you travel?" "Big deal..." They
minimize it.
I carry and or use a few supplies whenever I travel a certain distance where
I fear I could have an IBS attack. My Doctor prescribes me Benyl, which has
helped a bit. I also carry over the counter products like Equalactin because
it relieves certain IBS symptoms and Immodium AD Advanced because sometimes
it's necessary. I try not to take it too often though since it can cause
constipation if used in excess. I also bring a bottle of Poland Spring or some
other kind of bottle water product since IBS can make a person feel dehydrated
and weak. I also bring an extra depends in my bag so I can change if I get an
attack and suffer the humiliation of not making to a rest room in time. In
case you are wondering where I carry all this stuff, I use a regular backpack
since it frees up my pockets and no one has to know what I'm carrying. It comes
in handy too if you pick up something at a store or while visiting someone
or some place.
I dread long trips and sometimes I'd rather walk because I feel more in
control than be stuck on a subway. IBS wrecked job prospects and social
activities. I see a shrink and I'm on SSI/SSD now. Despite all the troubles I
have
had, I do believe my life has improved a bit and I have hope, but it's
something
I think I'll have to cope with for the rest of my life. I just hope to find
a woman who understands and accepts me despite my plight because no one
should be alone and sometimes relationships make a big difference. A woman's
encouragement means a lot to a man.
I hope you will write again. I'm happy to make your acquaintance. Just
because this is an IBS Singles group, doesn't mean we can't talk about other
things too. We are all human beings and our lives have more in it to share than
IBS horror stories. I'd like to see this group be a forum for support and
friendship as well as romantic meetings that could blossom between members.
Mark
