find AICPI of year 2010 or 2011. calculate multiplying factor = AICPI X 4.93/100. multiply original classification of 1961 by multiplying factor.
you will get AICPI on net.

Dear

An Interagency Group on micronutrients has been formulated by ICMR involving Department of Biotechnology, Department of Health Research, Department of Agriculture Research and Education, Department of Science & Technology, Department of Scientific & Industrial Research and Defence R&D.

The group would function in a three tier manner with the interagency group, steering committee and working group as first, second and third tier respectively. The following working groups would be constituted to address the various aspects related to micronutrient research:

Group 1:

Operational and translation research to improve the contents and delivery of existing micronutrient supplementation or other programmes based on existing knowledge.

Group 2:

Improve nutrition quality of food through techniques like bio- fortification, etc.

Group 3:

Generate knowledge regarding role of micronutrients with respect to biological and heath consequences and their implication for policy. Some of these micronutrients may be where deficiency is relatively common.

Group 4:

Food analysis, storage, and ways to improve availability of micronutrients from soil, food etc and processing to preserve the micronutrient content.

Group 5:

Tools for nutrition research- analytical techniques, reference standards, normal values, biomarkers for research, clinical or programme use

Group 6:

Nutrition Education, training and communication.

The members of working group will be selected based on scientific publications or positions in different institutes of the country especially remote areas and unrepresented areas of the country. Few youngsters below the age of 40 years will also be included in each working group.

Those who are interested can visit web page or ICMR

Dear Sir

>>>>Doctors are supposed to prescribe as per generic names of drugs in accordance with the MCI Regulations, 2002.<<<

But as per the MCI code of medical ethics:

////1.5 Use of Generic names of drugsEvery physician should, as far as possible, prescribe drugs with generic names and he / she shall ensure that there is a rational prescription and use of drugs.////

This clause has been included in the code medical ethics for the benefit of the patients. If the doctors start prescribing generic drugs the patients will get medicines of reduced cost.

You may note the word used in that clause -as far as possible-which means that this is not mandatory and is not forcibly imposed on doctors.

But unfortunately the requirement of pharmacists is not to provide low cost and good quality medicines to patients. But to get a release from the clutches of doctors in doing their business of medicines, so that they need to invest less money to do their business compared to the present situation.

It will be easy for the pharmacists to Stock Medicines of high margin and low quality in limited brands. They are only concerned with their profit rather than curing ailment of the parents.

Why should the medicine manufacturers, manufacture medicines with brand names? If they avoid brand names, the cost of the medicines will be reduced. Also the doctors will not be able to prescribe brands. Why should pharmacists impose their requirements on doctors?

There is nothing wrong if the Kerala state Govt Pharmacists Association district branch appeals to the State Govt that they should take action to make the doctors prescribe medicine in its chemical name. Such action should have been taken by the health department much earlier on its own and the state medical council and the IMA, not the pharmacists' association, should have urged the health department to do so. Doctors are supposed to prescribe as per generic names of drugs in accordance with the MCI Regulations, 2002. It is ironical that the pharmacists have to request the health department to make doctors adhere to the Code of Medical Ethics. I feel like complimenting the pharmacists for this.

Dear All

Please see the attached file: It is the news displayed in a leading Malayalam Daily, MalayalaManorama, on 18/12/11 in Calicut edition.

The gist of the news is:

“The Kerala state Govt Pharmacists Association district branch appeals to the State Govt that they should take action to make the doctors prescribe medicine in its chemical name. Also thye requested the Govt to approve the appeal of health dept to appoint 1918 Pharmacists”

My opinion:

If the doctors are not allowed to prescribe brands of medicines,

let the manufacturers stop manufacturing medicines with brand names .It is also having the following advantages:

  1. The cost of drugs can be reduced as the taxes will be less on the drug when it is not having the brand name.  Patients will be benefited.
  2. The pharmacists need not struggle to impose their needs on doctors.

The PCI themselves show us a format of prescription and teach pharmacists to handle such prescriptions.

Following is the prescription format taught by the PCI in the subject Pharmaceutics for pharmacist. In that the name of the manufacturer is clearly mentioned along with the molecule. Why should PCI teach such a format of prescription if the doctor cannot write brand or specify the name of the manufacturer?. Doctors can adopt that format of prescription. Still we should not allow the pharmacist to decide either the brand or the manufacturer of the medicines. It is taken from Pharmaceutics II by Dr.S Palanichamy & Prof. P.N Ramakrishnan.

Dear Colleague,

I am sure all you would agree that In our medical education, no where are we encouraged to improve our communication skills--oral and written. Vis a vis, I find engineers passing out from good colleges or professionals from other fields have better communication skills.

In public health, our communication skills have to be certainly above average to reach out to different stakeholders. I would encourage you to visit www.taostmasters.org.

Toastmasters club is a platform of voluntary individuals who get together to improve their communication skills in stages. It is a weekly meeting forum where the members delievr speeches and their speaking skills are critically analyzed with an aim to develop the skills for each individual. Small closed groups maintain the privacy and one feels at home in sharing out one's all weaknesses in communication and mentors from the with in the club help new entrants inmprove the same.

Additionally, the leadership skills also improve over a period of time. It is a real fun platform where you learn a lot of new topics beyond typical medicine or say public health issues only.

Why do not you just visit the club site or google out the club located in your city--all big citiies have many such clubs.

You may call me (09910555964) or write individually for more details. Financially, the fees are very minimal and would be a value for money.

Those who feel that they have excellent communication skills, should also visiit the club at least once, for their skills may be of value for others, not only doctors, but the young and old professionals from different fields as colleagues with good communication skills might enroll themselves as Mentors.

Opioid Abuse Linked to Mood and Anxiety Disorders

New study provides support for a bi-directional pathway between non-medical prescription opioid use and opioid-use disorder due to non-medical use and several mood anxiety disorders.

Individuals suffering from mood and anxiety disorders such as bipolar, panic disorder and major depressive disorder may be more likely to abuse opioids, according to a new study led by researchers from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. They found that mood and anxiety disorders are highly associated with non-medical prescription opioid use. The results are featured in a recent issue of the Journal of Psychological Medicine.

Subject: India finally closer to eradicating polio
drsurendernikhil@...
Send Email Send Email

http://www.tribuneindia.com/2011/20111225/edit.htm#5

Not a single case of polio has been reported from anywhere in the country during the past eleven months. As many as 42 cases were reported across the country in 2010 but authorities are now hopeful that no new case will be reported till the end of January 2012. Should this happen, India would complete a polio-free year. No case, however, should be reported for three consecutive years before the country can be officially said to have eradicated polio.

When he took over as the president of Rotary International - only the third Indian to do so, Kalyan Banerjee said his mission was to combat polio. A chemical engineer by training from IIT, Kharagpur, Banerjee is a past president of Vapi Industries Association, and former chairperson of the Gujarat chapter of the Confederation of Indian Industry. Presently a director of United Phosphorous, Vapi-based Banerjee is credited with setting up institutions like the Gnyan Dham High School, Haria Rotary Hospital, ROFEL Commerce and Arts College and the C.D.Patel Gujarati Medium Technical school.

How is Rotary International’s polio project doing?

Rotary International started the project to combat polio way back in 1979 even before agencies like the World Health Organisation got into the act. The latest is that there are eight countries in the world that have active polio. India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria are countries where cases of polio continue to be detected. The battle against polio has been an uphill journey in India. The good news is that India has been free of polio for the past 11 months. In January, the government will hopefully be able to say that India is polio-free.

What are the highlights of the battle against polio?

There have been no cases of polio in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar for the past two years according to the WHO. That is a major achievement as these two states used to record a large number of polio cases.

How was the battle against polio won in India?

In India, the polio vaccine is distributed by the government. Elsewhere, the WHO is responsible for the distribution of the vaccine.  With the government doing the bulk of the work at immunising the population, organisations like the Rotary Club pitch in by filling whatever gaps remain in the programme. Rotarians provide the infrastructure required.

How successful have you been in Africa?

We have achieved tremendous success in Nigeria, where we hope to completely eradicate polio by 2012. When I met the health minister there, I got to know that he himself was a member of the Rotary Club and he extended a lot of help to us.

What are the challenges?

In Afghanistan WHO volunteers have been shot at and killed. But there are Rotary Clubs in Afghanistan, which actively work for social welfare. There are obvious limitations but the population there is much smaller and there are fewer children. In places like Northern Afghanistan it is risky but we are in touch with the insurgent groups and work with them... we had done this in Sri Lanka as well when there was a civil war on in that country.

How much have Indian corporates helped you?

The efforts of Rotary have been aided by funding from agencies like the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation which pledged US$ 355 million for eradicating polio. In India we get funds from companies like the Tatas, Birlas.... Rajeshree Birla gave us Rs 25 crores. I am now on my way to meet (Dubai-based diamond merchant) Harshad Mehta, who has pledged US$ 3.5 million dollars.

Warren Buffett, who wanted rich Indians to pledge a part of their wealth towards charity, got a cold shoulder here. Your comments?

It is not that Indians do not do charity, but we prefer to do it quietly, unnoticed and unobserved. The Tatas do it regularly, the Birlas have their temples all over the country. But the Americans do it differently. They have their Foundations to do this.

Thank you very much.

GOVT TO GIVE IRON, FOLIC ACID TO 12 CRORE YOUNG GIRLS

Kalyan Ray, New Delhi, December 25, DHNS

Out of 5.7 crore adolescent Indian girls, 3.2 crore are anaemic

Aiming to improve maternal health, the Centre plans to give iron and folic acid supplements to crores of young girls every Monday so that they no longer have anaemia at the time of childbirth.

India has a high prevalence of adolescent anaemia. Out of an estimated 12.2 crore adolescents in India (Census 2011 projected population) between 15 and 19 years of age, approximately 5.7 crores are girls, of which 3.2 crores are anaemic. There are 6.5 crores boys in this age of which approximately two crores are anaemic.

Anaemia continues to be one of India's major public health problems, especially among teen age girls. It enhances the risk of pre-term delivery and having babies with low birth weight, which are more likely to be ill and die before a year of age.

The Union Health Ministry has now suggested that the states to find a fixed day—once in a week, like every Monday—when iron and folic acid tablets could be made available to the young girls in the supervision of either a school teacher or an anganwadi worker, who will ensure that the girls take these tablets rather than throwing them away.

As the scheme will be funded under the National Rural Health Mission, the states have been asked to project their fund requirement for 2012-13, so that it can be rolled out in the next financial year, said an official. Besides reproductive and child health problems, anaemia in adolescent girls also increases the risk of maternal deaths. Above one-third of maternal deaths take place in young women in the age group of 15 to 24 years.

Neonatal mortality is also hugely influenced by maternal health, being as high as 54 per 1,000 among those aged 15 to 19 years.

The government scheme aims at a supervised administration of iron-folic acid supplements, of 100 mg elemental iron and 500 mg folic acid, to the adolescents and screening of the target groups for moderate and severe anaemia.

Anaemia occurs primarily due to iron deficiency and is one of the most common nutritional deficiency disorders in the country. It is a result of under-nutrition and poor dietary intake of iron; a nationwide problem, not only among pregnant women, infants and young children but also among adolescents.

A 2009 Indian Statistical Institute study covering 177,670 girls from 35 states and union territories found the highest prevalence of anaemia (99.9 per cent) in Jharkhand.

The highest prevalence rates were observed among older girls (15 to 19 years), illiterate girls living in rural areas, girls in illiterate households, girls from households with a low standard of living, non-Christian girls, girls from Scheduled Tribes, girls living in west India, and married girls, says the study published in Food Nutrition Bulletin.

Anaemia also results in poor physical growth, reduced school performance, diminished concentration in daily tasks and work output resulting in lower earning capacity.
