Since last night I have spent a bit of time researching
Grouply.
If a member of a forum joins Grouply then Grouply
can access that forum as if it is that member. Any email
addresses of other members which are visible there are
thus also visible to Grouply. Grouply sends emails to the
addresses it harvests in this way and *says* they are from
another member of that forum. A lie to be sure.
If a moderator or owner of a forum joins Grouply then
Grouply can access that forum as if it is that moderator
or owner, complete with full privileges. That's right.
Grouply could theoretically kick out the real owner and
take over the forum!
Grouply tries to make itself appear as if it is part of Yahoo.
It is not. Grouply can also infect Google forums in the
same way it infects Yahoo forums. Theoretically, it could
infect any forum, even one which is based on a private
website which has nothing to do with Yahoo or Google.
When I discovered what Grouply was doing by
impersonating me I quickly changed my Yahoo password
and shortly thereafter deleted that ID altogether. I then
stayed up till 3:00 in the morning rebuilding my personal
security and that of a forum I own. Moral of the story,
joining Grouply is to open a Pandora's box of problems
that can affect you and your friends. Best advice, when
you get an invitation to join Grouply, press "DELETE".
