KEYNOTE SPEAKER:
This month's speaker is Alan Anderson. His topic is "Law of Attraction Meets NLP
& Hypnosis Techniques."
Alan says:
In this brief session I will briefly go over the basics of the law of attraction
as laid out by Wallace D. Wattle in his 1910 book The Science of Getting Rich I
will talk about my techniques for enhancing the possible result of visualization
therein mentioned by using NLP; specifically Richard Bandler's the Structure of
Certainty technique and by enlisting all of the senses to create the most vivid
imagining possible. I will also discuss in sort the principles laid out by Ken
Blanchard and Sheldon Bowles in their book Raving Fans.
I will do a small demonstration or two to illustrate the true identity of money,
how we think about it, and how we feel about it. I intend to demonstrate the
various rates professionals are charging their customers in an effort to break
down misconception and personal worth issues. The information presented will be
drawn from my Seminar Manifest Riches Now It will be a fast paced presentation.

Sounds Good - Adjust Your Inner Soundtrack to Increase Motivation & Release
Negative Emotions
Discover the freedom to change your emotional states at will, through changing
your inner soundtrack. Combat negative self talk and negative emotions, or
increase motivation with the power of your own mind! Sounds good to me!
The topic is sound...music, speech, how the soundtrack of our lives influences
our emotional states. And how WE can enhance this and alter this influence for
our own well-being. We can can do all sorts of things, for example release
negative emotions, create motivation, move us forward in our desires. By
"tinkering" with sound in our minds!
Music moves us, elevates us, stirs our emotions, in the direction of any emotion
you can name. Think of a march by John Phillip Sousa, or how any stirring
anthem activates our feelings of patriotism. Think how a quiet, beautiful
orchestral piece of music calms and relaxes. Think of a horror movie
soundtrack, full of tension and suspense. Sound is a huge part of our
experience of our lives and key to our memories and emotional states. Imagine a
love movie with no soundtrack--would it have the same emotional impact? No!
By altering the sounds we play in our minds in simple ways, we can experience
life differently, more positively, and here are a few easy ideas to do so:
We've all had arguments, with a coworker, with a spouse, with a friend, and
sometimes they "eat" at us. We play them over and over in our minds, and churn
up even more negative emotions like anger and irritation. Here's something to
do: as you think about that argument, create a new soundtrack. Let the voices
fade and cue in the circus music. Clown music. Carnival music. Do do
doodle-ooodle ut do do-dooo... Do do doodle-ooodle ut do do-dooo...Play that
for awhile as the argument runs in your mind, and let it transform your
experience of the argument. Done? Great! Now, think about it. That arguments
seems kind of silly, doesn't it? Ridiculous. Less power. Less force to
disturb. And that's a GOOD thing.
Here's another use for improving your life with sound. You want to get to the
gym, you know you need to exercise. You want to exercise, but somehow...you
just aren't doing it. Here's what gets me going, and pumps up my motivation.
The Rocky Theme. You know the one, where he's running up the steps in
Philadelphia: "getting strong now, gonna fly now..." Play that music in your
mind when you want a lift of success and motivation. The resultant emotion will
propel you out the door and to the gym. Or insert any other inspirational music
which speaks to you. Movies are a great source to reference, because we all
know them. You can pump up your confidence as well with music such as Indiana
Jones, Star Wars, Superman.
Here's another wonderful use of this: play with sound to combat what we call
"negative self talk." That's the little critical voice in your mind always
telling you what you can't accomplish, and spraying you with curses: "You're
lazy!," "You're stupid!," "You'll never get it done!" and so on. Imagine that
voice to be a different voice, a silly voice, a cartoon voice. Bugs Bunny,
Mickey Mouse, Elmer Fudd, something ridiculous. Hear the same words in that
new, ridiculous, cartoon voice. Maybe it's a squeaky, high pitched cartoon
voice. "You're lazy!" The impact on you is different, isn't it? Now it's
absurd, and not to be taken seriously. The voice is a joke!
Here's what else you can do. Imagine that you're at the controls of an old time
radio with dials. Yes, kids, radios used to have dials. As you play those
silly, cartoon voices telling you negative things about yourself and the world,
just turn down the volume. Softer, softer, turn it down, turn it down, turn it
down, until the voice is barely audible, then just a whisper on the wind, and
then...gone. It's nice to shut that critical voice up, isn't it?
The secret here, we can choose how we feel. Play with these simple techniques
above involving sound to feel good now!

This month's speaker is Craig Sigl. His topic will be "Mental Toughness for
Business Success."
This talk will be geared for the hypnotherapist struggling to earn a living and
how to work with business clients who are not achieving their financial goals.
I moved to Seattle on Jan 1st, 2007 to start my full-time hypnosis business. I
had no office, no practice, no network, no contacts and began to build my
practice from scratch. In 2008, I grossed over $100k.
I will take you through the fundamentals of creating your own business success
through destroying your mental blocks and creating mental toughness. Once you do
that, it will allow you and your clients to take advantage of the amazing
opportunities available to you even in today's tough economy. People are still
spending money like water and if you're not getting your share of it, I'm going
to give you keys to open some doors.

FEATURED ARTICLE:
"Wanting Vs. Having" by Jack Elias
I was particularly struck by the disabling hypnotic power unleashed by the
unwitting imprecise use of language in a family session recently. Each member
sincerely expressed that they wanted peace and even gave a brief explanation of
why they valued it. But they were in my office because they did not have peace
and were constantly fighting.
Wanting vs. Having -- I hear it from almost every client, but hearing it from
all these people at once somehow made it a fresh new phenomenon. This is one way
I like to look at the problem:
1) Our subconscious mind is always listening, especially to what we say to
ourselves over and over. The subconscious mind's intention is to take care of
us, but, sadly, it will follow our insistent commands even if they lead to
suffering.
2) For the conscious mind to want something (an inner quality or state, not a
physical object) like peace, the subconscious mind first has to deny the
conscious mind access to it. This typically has happened long ago in our
childhood.
3) But when the conscious mind notices the quality is absent and thinks, "I want
peace," the subconscious mind notices the conscious mind's interest in wanting
and, in order to accommodate the conscious mind's wanting to want, the
subconscious mind continues to deny access to peace (in this example) so the
conscious mind can keep wanting. (You might want to read this a few times.)
4) When we stop wanting and start acting as if we have it, the subconscious mind
notices our interest in having and stops denying access to the experience of the
inner quality, in this example, peace. The subconscious mind aims to please!!
It knows you have to feel the quality in order to really enjoy the actions that
go with the quality, so it plugs you in!
This game of the mind would be funny if it didn't cause us so much pain. To get
unstuck from the game we must act in accordance with having the quality because
this instructs the subconscious mind to activate the quality -- to give it to
us.
Every time a potentially irritating situation came up for these family
members, they chose to act in hostile ways triggered by irritation, all the
while wanting peace with greater and greater frustration. To have peace, they
have to stop wanting it, and act as if they have peace. A good way to accomplish
this is to ask oneself, "What would I say or do right now if I was perfectly at
peace?"
We have been subtly hypnotized to believe that we can't act contrary to our
feeling state -- we can't act, or even shouldn't, act kindly if we don't feel
kindness. Makes sense to most of us, but it actually puts the cart before the
horse.
The quickest and best way to access an inner quality or feeling state is to
think and act in ways you would if you did have it because that let's your
subconscious mind know you want it!

KEYNOTE SPEAKER:
"How to Get on the Front Page of Google".
Katie Evans
Do you want more business?
Do you think you have to spend a ton of money advertising to get that
business?
Would you like to be on Page 1 of Google for your key words?
If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, you absolutely MUST attend the
next NGHWA meeting on Friday, August 14.
Our Speaker is Katie Evans, who will share her secrets to getting very high
organic ("free") rankings on search engines.
Katie began her practice in Seattle in 1987 after studying with the
legendary Charlie Tebbetts. She now has 12 Living Lite Hypnosis Centers
nationwide and is in the process of opening 3 more in the Epicenter Athletic
Clubs around Puget Sound. Most of her business comes from Google and she pays
nothing, zero, zip, nada for those leads—and spends less than 1 hour a week
keeping 2 sites on page one of Google for key words "hypnosis weight loss."
Katie has generously agreed to share her secrets with NGHWA.
If you need more business, you must attend!

FEATURED ARTICLE:
"The Importance of Calibration in NLP"
Keith Livingston
Calibration is the art of taking a "mental snapshot" of a person's emotional
state(s). The purpose? So you know when they are accessing that state again.
Another word for calibration is "measurement." So, you're
looking/listening/feeling for clues and cues that mark a particular emotion in a
person.
How do we use it???
• It's useful for knowing when a person has changed their emotional response to
a situation. It's a channel of communication other than verbal content (and
usually much more accurate).
• It's helps you know when you're moving toward a particular goal with a person
(whether professional or personal).
• It helps you know if your NLP and hypnotic techniques (such as anchoring)
have "taken."
Examples Where Calibration is Useful
Let's suppose you're working with a client and they have anxiety about a
situation. You calibrate the anxiety state and a relaxed confident state. After
you've done your work, you associate them into the formerly anxious situation.
They say they feel fine but you notice they have several markers of the anxious
state present.
You're doing a collapse anchors. You've calibrated both states and fired off
both anchors. How do you tell what's going on and if it's working? Calibration.
You've met someone you're interested in. You've calibrated them to like/dislike.
You can use your calibration skills to tailor your message to them to make sure
you're heading in the right direction.
Without Calibration Skills, You're Driving Blind
In the above examples and in many other situations, without calibration, you'd
be driving blind. More accurately, you'd be relying on conscious information and
ignoring unconscious information. It's not that people are lying all the time;
it's just that sometimes the conscious mind and the unconscious mind have
different ideas or are in conflict about something.
Enjoy,
Keith

KEYNOTE SPEAKER:
"Transforming Words: Kaleidoscope of Mind"
Instantly transform your clients with powerful Mind Shifting Language.
Connie Brannan, CHt. & Licensed Trainer of Neuro-Linguistic Programming
Words have immense power. Language patterns have immense power. We all know
this. It's our stock in trade as hypnotherapists, our tools of transformation,
after all. In this talk, I'll present a fun conversational process, a hypnotic
process using "transforming words" to shift attention to resources, while
inducing trance, and blowing out a problem state! We'll have a live
demonstration of the process, and your own hands-on opportunity to practice as
well.
"Where attention goes, energy flows." Simply stated, we focus on a shifting of
attention to where the problem is not, using paradoxical language to elicit
resources, which we can then attach where needed and useful. A three-dimensional
metaphor: Kaleidoscopes. I love them--those shape-shifting, spinning, living
pieces of art! As we spin or rotate the tube, we get a unique and beautiful new
view of the same bits of glass and beads and paper, etc. which are
present—reflected to us in new ways. It's the same with our minds. They can
spin, too. With transforming words, we spin them in useful, problem-dissolving
directions.
Connie Brannan, CHt., is a Neuro-Linguistic Hypnotherapist and Licensed Trainer
of Neuro Linguistic Programming™. She's co-creator of Mindworks Hypnosis (a

well as a trained and certified Stage Hypnotist. She is an active member in

FEATURED ARTICLE:
"'What do I want?' -- Easy Steps for Goal Setting and Manifestation of Desires"
Connie Brannan, CHt.
"I hate my life." "I hate my job." "I hate _________." Have you ever caught
yourself thinking and feeling this way? Or perhaps your clients express these
feelings to you? Feeling trapped, or suffocated by circumstances? I think we
all have experienced this. The good news: We all can change things. No one is a
victim in this life. We all have choices. And we can guide others to more
choices, as well, through this process.
The topic today is manifesting. It's about bringing into reality the things we
want, and increasing joy. We're not talking hocus pocus, or pipe dreams. It's
real. In my own life, I've successfully manifested a lot of things, new body
(I've lost a lot of pounds!), new friends, new career, and new passions. You
can, too!
The most important part of manifesting is coming up with and knowing the answer
to this question: "What do I want?" If you're like I was, I'm sure you can come
up with a litany of "here's what I DON'T want..." That's not the question. What
DO you want? Focus on the positive! What you focus on expands. When you focus on
what you don't want, you get more of what you don't want. Think, rather, about
what you do want. Delineate what you want, inside and out, and make sure it's
realistic, makes sense and fits your life. Here's how to create a well-formed
goal or outcome in your mind, or on paper, for yourself or others.
So, you're thinking about what you want: state it in the positive. The next step
is to set the context. Be very specific! Where do you want this goal, when and
with whom? Think about these things as well: Is it realistic? Is it attainable?
"I want to lose 40 pounds by next Saturday." Not realistic! It reminds me of the
magic 8 ball message: "wish for something possible." It has to be physically
possible. Perhaps change it to 40 pounds within the next several months; that's
doable.
Ask yourself: Is this something I can do by myself, start by myself? We only
control ourselves, our behavior, our feelings, we can't control others. "I want
Mary Jane to fall in love with me." That's not a well-formed goal. What you can
wish for, instead, is that you yourself develop and enhance your own positive
attributes that would attract someone like Mary Jane.
Think about the goal in complete sensory terms. How will you know you've gotten
it? What will it look like? What will you feel inside your body? What will you
hear? Smell? Taste? Get every sense involved!
Think about how the desired outcome may change your life, and whether those are
positive changes for all aspects of your life. How will it affect your family
and your friends, your health, your career, your spiritual beliefs, everything?
How does it fit? You may want a promotion in your job, but what if that would
entail much more time spent working and traveling, and less time for your
family. How do you feel about that? Is it worth what it will take to get it?
Think about ecology, as it's called, as you define your outcome.
Ok, now you have an answer to "What do I want?" You have a positive,
contextualized, self-propelling, sensory-based, ecological goal. You've
accomplished more than half the battle!! Now we'll talk about what specifically
you can do with this goal to bring it into your world as reality. Here comes the
fun part.
We play "let's pretend!" Activate all your senses. Go inside your mind and
imagine or fantasize that you have already manifested the goal. It's yours! What
is your life like now? How does it look? How does it feel? How does it taste?
What do you hear? What's going on? Get inside that context you created. Most
importantly, attach a strong feeling of satisfaction to having your goal. I like
to play this James Brown song in my mind: "I feel good! I knew that I would,
now!" Create a knowing, a certainty, that what you want is a done deal. I throw
in some gratitude, as well.
Now, think about how you got there. Notice any intermediate steps you might have
taken to accomplish the goal, and attach a powerful feeling of desire to them.
Feel the satisfaction as you move closer to the goal, step by step, and feel a
growing sense of completion. Make this exercise in imagination really intense,
fully blooming, make it potent! The better you can create a compelling fantasy
here, the more importance your unconscious mind will attach to accomplishing the
goal.
Now, let go and trust. And watch (in varying degrees of amazement) as things
materialize for you. Your unconscious mind will look for opportunities, little
things in everyday life, which will advance you towards your goal. When you
notice these little positive nudges from the universe occurring, go with them!
Go with the flow, towards achieving what you want.
Put a written list of your goal or goals where you will see
it, and spend time every day looking at it. When you review it, notice the
progress being made on each one, and activate that gratitude again! Be
appreciative. Every few weeks, you lather, rinse, and repeat: Re-do the
imagination and desire process. You can modify the goals at any time and make
any changes you desire as you're moving forward.
Life is all about change. Change is good! Change is fun, especially when it's a
positive change you have well-delineated and desire intensely, and have
manifested into your life. Go for it!!

Getting to the Heart and Soul of the Issue
Mary Lee LaBay, Ph.D.
According to a 30-year research by Segerstrom and Miller, illness and
dysfunction stem from stress, and the nature of the stress will indicate
the nature of the illness. This is important news for hypnotherapists.
While it is well-known that we assist our clients in alleviating
stress, hypnotherapists trained in specific approaches, can also
facilitate the discovery of the nature of the stress – leading to
sustainable health and happiness. And this means a successful practice
for you!
Sure, we know that jobs, finances, family issues, and so forth cause
stress – but what is it in the individual's philosophy and sense
of life, and their interaction with reality, that will bring them back,
again and again, to self-sabotage, low self-esteem, addictions, and poor
choices? While many claim it is fear, there are much deeper and more
specific causes to uncover.
In this workshop,
--Discuss a number of concepts vital to achieving sustainable health and
happiness for your clients.
--Learn techniques that lead to the discovery of the deepest roots of
stress – what to look for and how to proceed.
--Witness a demonstration on a volunteer.
Mary Lee LaBay is known for her organic, no-scripts approach to hypnosis
and has presented at conferences in The Netherlands, India, U.K., and
across the U.S. Mary Lee holds a Ph.D. in Behavioral Psychology and is
a Certified Instructor of Hypnotherapy. She has authored 5 books,
including Hypnotherapy: A Client-Centered Approach, which is widely used
as a textbook. Her Awareness Engineering®, hypnosis trainings are

FEATURED ARTICLE:
Meditation vs. Hypnosis
David J Zarza, C.Ht.
As a professional hypnotherapist, we field a variety of questions
regarding our profession. It is important to be equipped with the
correct answers. Here's one of the more common question I hear,
"David, what is the difference between Meditation & Hypnosis?"
The Short Answer is that Meditation is achieved by organizing your
thoughts and with practice, helps you achieve more conscious control
over your thought processes. Hypnosis is a state achieved by
disorganizing your conscious thoughts to help your subconscious affect
more automatic changes in your thought processes and body.
On Meditation: Essentially, meditation is characterized by a mix of
various brain wave states (from full waking to dream state). Meditation
works because it strengthens the relationship between the amygdala (the
part of our brain that decides if we should get angry or anxious; our
fear center) and the pre-frontal cortex (that part of our brain that
makes us stop & think about things; our inhibitory process); such that
you end up being able to more easily shift your thoughts, consciously,
away from fight/flight thinking.
Additionally, some studies have shown links between the practice of
meditation and activity in the left pre-frontal cortex (associated with
concentration, planning, meta-cognition [thinking about thinking], and
positive affect [good feelings]) yielding changes that last over time
even after you don't meditate for a while.
On Hypnosis: In Hypnosis, brain waves characterizing sleep & dreaming
increase, while brain waves associated with full wakefulness decrease.
This pattern does fit the hypothesis that the conscious mind backs off
during hypnosis and the subconscious mind takes a more active role.
Furthermore, during hypnosis scientist have seen reduced activity in the
left hemisphere of the brain (the logical control center of the brain)
and increased activity in the right hemisphere of the brain (controls
imagination and creativity). This supports the idea that hypnosis
subdues the conscious mind's inhibitory influence and the creative,
impulsive subconscious mind takes the reigns. Evidence that hypnosis
opens up the subconscious mind!
Conclusion: Summing it all up, even though the two techniques may feel
similar, they are physiologically quite different and may be used for
different purposes: meditation for more conscious control and hypnosis
to achieve subconscious control, a more effortless influencing of your
thoughts and feelings.

FEATURED ARTICLE:
Instant Personal Magnetism--the NLP of Rapport
Connie Brannan, CHt., Neuro-Linguistic Hypnotherapist & Licensed
Trainer of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (TM)
Did you ever meet someone and find yourself automatically drawn to them
in a powerful way? Find that it's someone you agree with, want to
talk to more and more, listen to, learn from, someone you would like to
spend time with? Maybe you've found your best friend or soul mate,
or maybe…it's rapport!
The dictionary defines rapport as a "mutual trust and harmonious
emotional affinity" with others. I think of it more as simple
understanding, being on the same wavelength. Connection! The good news,
this is not some mystical phenomenon, which you either have or you
don't. The ability to always be connecting is a skill you can learn
and develop. Doing so will enhance your life in so many ways.
We all have our own reality and internal experiences of the world. We
give off "clues" (sometimes screamingly loud clues) to these internal
states through our body language, gestures, and more, which can be read
by those with whom we interact. Words themselves are a very small part
of how we communicate.
Here's one simple technique you can practice every day to build rapport
and make stronger connections! In the world of Neuro-Linguistic
Programming™, NLP™, this technique is called "mirroring" and it
allows you to share another person's experience and model of the world.
Understanding and appreciating another person's world is basic to
bridging worlds. As you're sitting with someone, or talking to someone,
maintain eye contact and do this:
Notice and physically match the person's
Posture
Gestures
Facial Expression
Speech, tone, tempo and volume
Breathing rhythm
When you successfully connect in this way, you share another person's
experience and gain a greater understanding of their world, and give
them a sense of your appreciation, harmony and respect. See how people
respond favorably to you when you connect in this way!
Here's another technique involving language:
Listen to the sensory words someone uses. Which of their five senses do
they use most to describe their world? Most people have a primary
preference. Do they primarily speak in the VISUAL (examples: "I see
what you mean," or "I view it this way") or with AUDITORY/sound words
(examples: "I hear what you're saying," or "That rings a bell with me")
or the KINESTHETIC/touch (examples: "I have a feeling you're right" or
"I can't get a handle on that") or TASTE/SMELL words (examples: "That
idea stinks" or "That's just sour grapes.")
The idea here is to communicate with someone using their own preferred
language, their own sense predicates. Match them! Again, it connects
you to them and conveys an understanding of their world and their
experience.
These are simple, yet profoundly powerful ways to enhance your
interaction and influence with other people. Give it a whirl and notice
what you notice about those bi-directional feelings of connection.

Dear fellow NGHers,
Craig Sigl, your VP here. I want to give a free gift of healing for a client of
yours or someone you care about.
I am sponsoring and attending a hypnotherapy healing workshop conducted by NGH
instructor, David Quigley, this weekend in Vancouver B.C.
I originally put this together for my mother who was battling cancer. She didn't
make it and passed away last weekend.
In her honor and memory, I would like to give her place to someone who is in
need of pain and healing relief. This is a 2-day workshop Sat April 18th and
Sun 19th from 9-6pm. I realize it's late notice but that will ensure that only
someone who is in real need will come forth.
If you have a client or a friend who is in serious need of healing and/or pain
relief, please email or call me.

GREETINGS:
April is sure to bring showers of wonderful new ideas and accomplishments. Join
us as we learn and network and enhance our skills at the April meeting of the
NGHWA. This meeting, Rowan Peacock presents a talk and focuses on the
transformative power of language, with an emphasis on "the positive."
You might find easy ways to use Rowan's ideas to increase client success in your
own practice, and enhance your own power.
**********************************************
KEYNOTE SPEAKER:
Rowan Peacock – "Creating Positive Experience"
----------------------------------------------
Learn `tricks' for turning negative focus into positive experience. Use
linguistics, the science of positive psychology, and the laws of attraction to
help yourself and others re-program the brain to `find' the positive in each
experience, and to develop awareness for likes, instead of dis-likes.
Re-write certain language patterns automatically, and even improve upon existing
hypnotic scripts – whether they are your own, or written by others. Experience
how, with a clever turn of phrase, you can help someone put the `past behind
them', or distance themselves from negativity.
About Rowan Peacock.
Rowan Peacock has been a Certified Neurolinguistic Hypnotherapist for almost 10
years. Having begun her career in marketing and training, the study of language
and how it impacts human behavior has always been a fascination for her.
Considered by some to be something of an expert in linguistics, Rowan focuses
much of her energy on perfecting hypnotic language – crafting the `perfect'
suggestion is a hobby, as well as professionally intriguing.
Rowan sees private clients in her office on Eastlake, has taught hypnosis, NLP,
and subconscious communication seminars, and consults with businesses on the use
of hypnotic language in marketing, management, and business development.

FEATURED ARTICLE:
"Yes, Master! I Hear and I Obey!" The Language of Influence - Embedded Commands,
by Connie Brannan.
Learn to recognize and use the unconscious power of hidden commands in
conversation and writing.
----------------------------------------------
You don't even need to notice how easy it is for you to read this article now
and develop new power and appreciation for words.
The power of words! The topic today is language and how words can influence you
on an unconscious level, influencing your thoughts, your emotions, and your
behavior. Specifically, the topic today is an aspect of language that you
experience every day of your life, something with which you are constantly being
bombarded: "embedded commands."
Do you ever wonder why your child pulls on your sleeve at the store and cries
vehemently for a particular brand of cereal or candy or toy? If you've ever
watched a TV commercial, or listened to the radio, or have read an advertisement
in a magazine or newspaper or online, or talked to a salesman, you've
experienced embedded commands. Advertisers and savvy salespeople love these,
and know their power to get you to buy, buy, buy, now!!
And I'm sure you've also experienced them in ordinary, everyday family and
friends' conversations. "Joe, I know you want to help me move, tomorrow!" You
use them yourself in your daily life, perhaps on a totally unconscious level!
They are a staple in dating and seduction workshops. "You, like me, think this a
great party, don't you?" The embedded command here is "you like me!"
An embedded command is a concept from NLP™. (Neuro-Linguistic Programming™ is a
patented change methodology co-created by genius, Richard Bandler, originally
formulated as a study of human excellence.) An embedded command is a
directive, a declarative sentence or phrase, telling you what to do or think,
which is "hidden" within other text in a sentence. The structure of the
sentence (along with other markers which we will discuss) leads the "secret
message" to zip right into your unconscious mind without resistance. Your
conscious mind is focusing on the rest of the sentence content and doesn't hear
or filter these messages.
Your unconscious mind is really the seat of your beliefs and behavior, so
messages that get in there have incredible power.
Here's an example, involving negation: "Don't think of a pink elephant wearing
a purple ballet outfit." What just happened? Your mind did it! The embedded
command here is "think of a pink elephant wearing a purple ballet outfit." Here
is another example: "Don't you agree, John?" The embedded command here is
"Agree, John!"
Often, like the example above, the sentence is in the form of a question, so
that consciously, you don't feel that you're being ordered to do something.
"Would you be so kind as to get the door?" The embedded command here is "get
the door." If you said to someone "get the door" directly, they may reply, "Get
it yourself, Lazybones!" Another example: "Do you remember how clean the
kitchen was when Grandma came over?" The embedded command here is "clean the
kitchen." My mother used a similar one on me all my life: "Just how long would
it take to do the dishes? Let's just see how long it will take." "Do the
dishes!"
Another way that commands are embedded is within quotes, telling what somebody
else said. The conscious mind thinks it is just hearing a story, while the
unconscious mind takes it as a direct instruction. "And then my friend said to
his co-worker, you can take me to lunch today." The embedded command here is
"take me to lunch today."
There are many sentence structures which "fluff up" the sentence and hide the
command. But there are many other ways to influence and give power to the
embedded command beyond sentence structure, as well.
In writing, the embedded commands can be marked out using font, spacing, color,
italics, all capital letters, underlining, or what have you! Even if ignored
consciously, this registers on your unconscious mind: Something is different
here, I'd better pay special attention.
You can mark out an embedded command using your voice in a number of different
ways. Even if the sentence is in the form of a question, when you deliver the
command verbally, give it a command tonality. With a question, your voice goes
up at the end. "Right??" With a command, it sounds firm and final, with a
downward tone. "Right!!" Give an embedded command with that downward tonality.
Do not do this harshly or with undue aggression, but simply as though you 100%
expect obedience. "Peel me a grape, slave!"
You could also pause before or after the command to give emphasis. "And then
Jane said: ' drive me to the store.'" And then Jane said (pause) drive me to
the store. You can also tinker with your voice tone and/or volume, and/or
speed--just create some change for the command portion only to mark it out to
the unconscious mind. The conscious mind may not, and probably won't, even
notice.
You can also incorporate gestures and body language to give emphasis to the
commands. A tilt of the head, a raised eyebrow (think Mr. Spock on Star Trek),
a hand gesture, all these things are powerful and will be read by the
unconscious, which notices EVERYTHING.
It's good to be aware of embedded commands, those attempts by others and
advertising and the world to influence you. It's also cool and potent as well
to work them into your own language, if you're so inclined. You use them
unconsciously, already. Words ARE power!!

"5 Minutes to a New, Confident You!" by Connie Brannan.
Employ this powerful NLP™ technique to improve your confidence - FAST!
Do you fear public speaking, or work situations such as giving a presentation or
negotiating a raise, or even simply approaching an attractive member of the
opposite sex? Do you have an overall lack of confidence? This article is for
you! Here comes an incredibly easy "mind game" with powerful results.
Confidence! We all want that in our lives, the assurance and calmness and
clarity of mind that comes from knowing we can do it! This quick technique is
one we can utilize to combat those "lack-of-confidence" feelings that may arise
in any particular setting and enable us to trust and believe in our own
capability. This is a fantastically powerful NLP™ process. It's known as: "The
New Behavior Generator." You're creating an internal road map of how to be
confident, utilizing unconscious learning.
Follow these simple steps, in your mind, if you will!
1. Think about a very specific situation in which you'd like to feel more
confident. Think about the context. Where and with whom would you like to feel
more confident? How would it be to be more confident? Would it be appropriate to
feel more confident?
2. Identify someone that you can use as a role model, someone you believe
demonstrates the confidence you would like to have. For example, if you'd like
to feel more confident as a public speaker, picture someone you know who is a
riveting and exciting and confident public speaker. Maybe it's Oprah, maybe it's
Johnny Carson. Maybe it's Ryan Seacrest.
3. Look at the role model in your mind, and see what they do in the context
you've chosen. Pretend you are watching a movie on a screen. See how they act,
evaluate their behavior. What behaviors are they using that demonstrate success
and confidence? How do they look? How do they stand? How do they talk? How do
they walk, breathe, and move...and so on? How are they feeling? Tinker with it,
manipulate their behavior in your mind until it is precisely the embodiment of
perfect confidence, perfect and compelling.
4. Now, watch the movie again, and see yourself in the action onscreen in place
of the role model. You are watching yourself onscreen, the confident you in your
chosen setting. You are using the identical behaviors, postures, words, etc. of
your role model in the previous version of the movie.
5. Now, step INTO the movie. You are not watching the movie, you are the actor.
You are the confident one. Feel it. Know it. Strut it! Experience the behavior
fully, exactly as you'd like it.
6. Imagine yourself in the future using the new powerful behavior. You feel
different now, more confident, don't you?
These simple steps help convince your mind that you are what you imagine
yourself to be. And, once you believe it, you become it. It's magick!

for improving your life through the use of hypnotic techniques. These
articles will be of particular interest to our valued general
readership, though even professional hypnotists may find some useful

Connie Brannan authored our first article on a problem we all face--
dealing with stress...so, sit back in a comfortable chair, relax and
learn some simple techniques to beat stress.
*************************************************
HYPNOTIC IMAGINATION--QUICK TIPS FOR STRESS BUSTING
Here are some easy hypnotic mind techniques for a healthier, less
stressful life
Here's a very appealing word: "relax." It even has a nice sound to
it when you say it out loud, slowly: reeee-laaxxxx. Stretch it out,
elongate. That's what we'd like to do in our lives with relaxation as
well-stretch it!
More, I want it. You want it. It's something we all need more of,
relief from the stresses and tensions and anxieties of everyday
living. These stresses are ever present and can take an enormous
toll on our physical and emotional well-being, can even lead to
illness.
Here are a few tips/ideas for utilizing the power of your own mind
and imagination to reduce stress. They'll help you to achieve
relaxation, physical rejuvenation, peaceful and optimistic feelings,
and clarity of thought and focus.
A favorite technique, which I utilize in my hypnotherapy practice:
breathe out a negative, breathe in a positive. This is an exercise
in imagination. Sit comfortably and allow your body to relax, close
your eyes, and focus on your breathing for a few minutes--in through
your nose and out through your mouth. Breathe in a positive
feeling: such as relaxation, or calm or contentment, breathe out a
negative feeling: like stress, anger, or resentment. Imagine
breathing in a golden light that moves and fills you, breathing out a
dark smoke. You'll find that the good feelings spread and permeate
throughout your entire body.
Here is a tried and true, wonderful stress releaser: fresh air, and
exercise! Go for a half hour walk outdoors. There are sure to be some
great places for this in your neighborhood. Focus on nature, the
beauty of the scenery, the sky, and let the fluid motion of your body
calm and relax you and bring bright pleasant thoughts to the
forefront.
How is that hypnotic, you might ask? As you're walking, program your
mind in new ways. Think of reasons why you CAN do something, rather
than why you can't. Focus on what you want, not what you don't
want. This shift in attitude will break the negative loops going on
in your mind, and allow you to see positive approaches and
solutions.
Also, avoid the word "try" in your mind and your language. "Trying"
implies failure. Imagine your goal as fully accomplished,
don't "try," DO. As a wise, wise man once said, "Drive your own bus."
Take responsibility for your own feelings, your emotions. Other
people and external forces can't "make you" feel a certain way.
You hold that power and freedom for yourself. You're not a victim.
You choose how you want to feel. Choose to feel wonderful. I
particularly like the expression: "like water off a duck's back."
Focus your imagination on the duck image, imagine you have that
resiliency yourself. Let the anxieties and negative emotions roll off
you, they're a liquid and you're water repellant!
Or you might imagine your worries floating away. Blow on a dandelion
flower and watch the spores fly and imagine that those are your
worries on the breeze, vanishing! Here's another image to use: either
in your mind or in reality, write out your worries, the things that
are causing you stress. Write them on a piece of paper, then roll it
up and attach that paper to a helium balloon. Now, let it fly! Watch
it rising and lifting, getting smaller and smaller, and less
significant. Finally, it's a mere dot, a speck in the distance,
then, it's gone! Your problems will become more remote, too.

Hello, everyone!
How would you like to train in conversational hypnosis, attend a 6-day
intensive seminar here in Seattle with a master hypnotist at no
charge? Connie and I have finagled a special offering for ONE lucky
member of our NGHWA chapter--Free Tuition for this seminar: "The
Conversational Hypnosis Professional Hypnotherapy Certification
Program." It's taught by a friend of ours, who is the leading
authority in the field of conversational hypnosis: Igor Ledochowski.
Connie and I attended this course in Palm Springs this year, and we
can tell you, it's valuable. You'll learn skills such as resourcing,
regressing, reintegration--conversationally. Also, Mind Bending
Language, and more. Whatever level of skill you are at, it will
enhance you. You'll also receive a certification through the IAPCH
(The International Association of Professional Conversational
Hypnotists). He charges $1697 for this training, but the selected
member of our chapter will attend at no cost!
Igor's generously offering this to one of our members, based on the
criteria of how you would use these skills as a force for good in the
world. Here's the catch!: you'll have to strike while the iron is
hot. As in: now! The training begins tomorrow, it runs January 9 -
14. 9:30 am to 6:30 pm.
Write to us by 7pm this evening (Thursday, Jan 8) and tell us why you
would be a good candidate for this training and how you would use the
skills to enhance yourself, and your practice of hypnosis in a special
way, and become an even stronger force for good in the world. Reply
to Connie Brannan, at cpbrannan@.... Igor and I will choose
someone. Also, if you would like more information on the training,
write to Connie for an info. link.
Replies to: cpbrannan@.... (by 7 pm tonight)
This is a fabulous opportunity to learn conversational hypnosis,
generously offered by Igor, just for one current member of our local
chapter. It's short notice, indeed, the training begins tomorrow, but
well worth it if you can manage it and commit to attend--and are
selected.
Warm regards,
Michael Brannan

Greetings to all,
It's the start of a new year, a time of new growth and new
opportunity. The new Board of Directors is ready and enthusiastic
about moving into the new year, knowing it is filled with the
excitement of novel and wonderful possibilities.
I know all members of the NGHWA and all those who attend our meetings
appreciate the excellent work and enthusiasm that the 2008 Board of
Directors brought for us. Their commitment to the success of the
organization showed in each and every meeting. We can only build on
their work to bring the organization the growth and development we
all want and know it deserves: increased membership, more resources
for our members and an increased awareness of the power of hypnosis
in our community! We look forward to a year filled with educational
and stimulating speakers, round table discussions and other events to
fulfill the mission of the NGHWA.

January Meeting Announcements:
Our Meeting:
The January meeting will be held January 9, 2009 at the South
Snohomish County P.U.D. office at:
21018 Highway 99, Edmonds, WA 98026.
A round table discussion on marketing takes center stage at this
meeting. Because many of us are in the business of hypnotherapy in
some form or another, finding new clients, discovering new ways to
bring our business to the spotlight, and, yes, increasing our income,
lies at the heart of our day to day business activities when we
aren't actually putting someone in a comfortable, deep trance. And
this means that we can all use good ideas on how to market ourselves,
better, cheaper and more effectively than ever.
The round table discussion will do just that! While the focus of the
discussion will, of course, be determined by everyone's interest,
here are a few things that we can discuss. From internet marketing,
to direct marketing, from workshops and talks to email marketing, all
is fair game. Bring your insights and experiences so that all may
benefit from the insights and experiences of all.
There is no charge for members of the NGWA to attend this meeting.
If you are not yet a member, you can attend for a $10 fee.

ANNOUNCING YOUR 2009 BOARD OF DIRECTORS!
I'm enthusiastic to introduce you to your new Board of Directors! But
first, I'd like to mention that this is the last NGHWA E-News I will
write as your President. It's been an honor and privilege to serve in
this capacity, along with my co-board members -- Jackie Foskett and
Mary Lee LaBay have each been past presidents, and Kate Wells has
been an active member for many years. We have enjoyed working
together and getting to know those of you who have been attending
meetings, and staying in touch via email with our larger community.
It's time for us to step aside to welcome some new members into
leadership positions.
2009 PRESIDENT: MICHAEL BRANNAN
2009 TREASURER: CONNIE BRANNAN
Our new President and Treasurer are a husband-wife team who have been
very active in NGHWA activities over the past couple of years.
Michael Brannan has been elected as President, and Connie Brannan has
stepped up to be our treasurer. Michael and Connie bring a wealth of
wisdom to our chapter, having attended trainings with some of the
most well-known leaders in the fields of hypnosis and NLP. Connie's
experience in accounting will assure good fiscal management of our
non-profit budget. Thank you
2009 VICE PRESIDENT: CRAIG SIGL
2009 SECRETARY: LISA MILLS
Craig Sigl and Lisa Mills have both been involved with NGHWA
activities for the past several years, volunteering at the World
Hypnotism Day Resource Forum, and actively participating in meetings.
We're delighted to welcome them to the board.
2009 EVENTS COORDINATORS: Wendy Vogt and Krizten Breidenich
The role of Event Coordinator has grown over the past few years, with
the addition of website postings and making arrangements to bring
qualified presenters to the chapter. This year, the role of Event
Coordinator will be shared by Wendy and Krizten, exemplifying the
benefit of collaboration vs. competition in all we do.
The current board will be meeting with the new board this week to get
them up to speed on everything they need to know so that the new
board can step up to the plate and take over in January. Please come
out to the December and January meetings to thank the current board
members and welcome the new ones. We look forward to seeing you!

Hello NGHWA Members and Friends...
Happy October! We hope you are continuing to learn and grow as you
network and connect with fellow members and colleagues. Those who

NGHWA members and consulting hypnotists Ann Sealy and Kate Wells will

SUMMER REVIEW AND FALL PLANNING
Happy September! We hope you've had a relaxing summer and are now
rejuvenated and ready to launch a successful fall. We at NGHWA have
been reaping the benefits of our monthly presentations filled with new
ways to build our practices and opportunities to exchange ideas with
our colleagues.
This summer, for example, we got to meet Dr. Cheryl Beighle, a
pediatrician who regularly uses hypnosis, who gave us some fantastic
tips for working with children in different age groups. She "de-
mystified" the process and helped those in attendance feel better
equipped to expand our practice to include children.
Those who showed up for our July meeting got a special bonus when
Keith Livingston (www.Hypnosis101.com) gave out free preview copies
of his newest programming on healing, "Miraculous Healing with Neuro-
Linguistic Hypnotherapy" and "The Traumatic Injury Relief Pattern."
Thank you, Keith!
In August, we focused on the legal aspects of running a practice as
attorney Michelle Hayden Bomberger (http://sblslaw.com/mission.html )
reviewed how to effectively set up the right kind of business
structure, reminded us how to deal with risk management, and offered
great tips for how to set up proper legal planning.
The best part of coming to chapter meetings is that we not only learn
from our presenters, we also learn from listening to other peoples'
questions, and from sharing ideas before and after each presentation.
Read on to learn about more great opportunities to connect with your
colleagues, learn and grow, and expand your horizons. We hope you
will make the effort to come out and join us at our next meeting,
this Friday.

SEPTEMBER CHAPTER MEETING:
"INVERSE WAVE THERAPY" WITH KATHIE BRODIE
FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 12, 2008 – 7:00 TO 9:00 PM
Location: South Snohomish County P.U.D. Office Auditorium
21018 Highway 99, Edmonds WA 98026
$10 for non-members
Please join us this Friday as our very own Kathie Brodie enlightens
us about a process she has been using successfully in her practice
called "Inverse Wave Therapy." Inverse Wave is a modality/technique
to use with clients experiencing a fear or phobia. It is a very
powerful tool to assist clients in reframing the experience into a
positive outcome.
Come discover:
- Why you want to have this technique in your "bag of tools"
- Why it works so well with fears and phobias
- How you can begin using it immediately with your clients
Kathie Brodie, "The Baggage Handler", is a consulting hypnotist, a
Reconnective Healer, and an Inverse Wave Practitioner. Kathie left
corporate America a few years ago to pursue her dream of assisting
people in "losing their baggage" in order to live the lives they
desire. Her office is in Shoreline. She can be reached at: 206-546-
8266. Visit her website: http://www.HarvestoftheHeart.com

Hello everyone,
I hope you are having a fabulous summer so far. I'm writing on behalf
of our President, Lauren Archer, who is enjoying a vacation with her
family.
As you know, Keith Livingston is speaking on this Friday, July 11th on
"NLP and Hypnosis for Healing: Strategies and techniques for working
with trauma, injuries and disease."
Well, Keith and Michael Bennett have just finished a new program,
"Miraculous Healing with Neuro-Linguistic Hypnotherapy®" and Keith is
giving the first 20 people through the door a copy!
"Miraculous Healing with Neuro-Linguistic Hypnotherapy®" is a DVD/CD
set that shows you healing techniques including; How to use belief
systems, rapport, three dimensional thought fields, reframing, embedded
suggestions, presuppositions, "magic words", "representational energy
healing", mapping across representational systems, the figure 8 pattern,
metaphor, and future pacing for healing.
There are three caveats however...
1) The DVD and CD you get won't have the fancy packaging or graphics the
finished program will have.
2) Keith is looking for testimonials, so if you accept a copy, you're
agreeing to give your opinion.
3) You have to be one of the first 20 people through the door.
So, who will be the very first person? The rest of the Board and
myself will be there to greet and congratulate you as you receive these
wonderful "goodies" from Keith.
See you Friday for an extraordinary evening of "Healing"!
Sincerely,
Jackie Foskett, CH

MORE QUESTIONS THAN ANSWERS ABOUT CHANGES TO STATE LAW
In last month's enews, I reported that Miriam Dyak, President of the
Washington State Professional Counselors Association, made a
presentation to the Washington State Holistic Chamber of Commerce in May that
Hypnotherapists will NOT be affected by the new changes in our state law.
However, in the past week, many of us have received postcards from the
Dept. of Health in the mail, inviting us to join their
"listserve" at http://listserv.wa.gov <http://listserv.wa.gov/>
to learn more. I went to their recommended page and noticed that
"Registered Hypnotherapist" is not even listed as a profession.
One of our members brought this to my attention:
On the Registered Counselor FAQ page of the Washington State Dept. of
Health Counselors – New Credentialing Types -- June 2008
(Excerpt)
"I am a registered hypnotherapist. Do I need to reapply as a
hypnotherapist?"
"You do not need to reapply as a hypnotherapist. As a registered
hypnotherapist, if you assist or attempt to assist a person or persons
to improve their mental, emotional, or behavioral problems then you must apply
for and receive a certified counselor or certified adviser
credential. As a registered hypnotherapist, if you include therapeutic
techniques to achieve understanding and awareness of self and others and the
growth of human potential then you must apply for and receive a certified
counselor or certified adviser credential. The registered
hypnotherapy statute only allows for the practice of hypnosis as a
modality."
This certainly suggests that the new legislation will indeed affect our status
as Hypnotherapists. We have been receiving lots of conflicting information, and
it appears that we have more questions than answers at this stage. I have made
contact with the department, and will let everyone know when and IF I receive
more definitive information.
Meanwhile, if you are concerned about this issue, you may wish to
consider joining the National Federation of Hypnotists – the
Hypnotist Union. You can now download an application online at
http://www.ngh.net/Downloads/Downloads.aspx

SUMMARY OF MAY 14 LECTURE
Changes to Washington State Law
The Washington State legislature recently approved changes to the
state laws which affect Registered Counselors. According to Miriam
Dyak, President of the Washington State Professional Counselors
Association (www.waproca.org), Hypnotherapists are NOT affected in
any way by these changes. Counselors will be required to add
continuing education. Miriam shared this news at the Washington State
Holistic Chamber of Commerce meeting at East-West Bookshop on May 14,
2008.
Miriam was uniquely qualified to articulate the history of the bill
and the various changes affecting counselors because she and a small
group of dedicated professionals personally invested many hours of
their time, energy, and resources over the course of the past two
years, travelling to Olympia on numerous occasions to represent the
interests of counselors in our state.
I got permission to audio record this lecture, and as soon as we get
it posted to a web page we will send out an announcement to let you
know how you can listen to it. For more information, please visit
www.waproca.org.
Special thanks to Katie Evans for being the representative from NGHWA
on this project. We are grateful for your time and energy to help
support our profession!

Covert Modeling, Covert Positive Reinforcement and Covert Negative
Reinforcement.
These techniques obviously have a wide range of applications for you

NEW BOARD POSITION OPEN: WEB MASTER
With recent advances in technology, our members can receive many more
benefits by posting their events and their information on our
organizations website. However, that requires a bit more work on the
part of our board members, who are already working hard to bring you
events and keep this organization running. So, the board has approved
a new position as Web Master. Board Members receive their annual
membership in the organization with no dues, as well as the
recognition of being a board member. Are you technically saavy? Would
you like to have the benefit of a board position just for maintaining
our website? If so, please contact us to discuss the details of our
new board position of Web Master. Call Lauren at 425-881-7082 or
email Lauren@... if you're interested.
Special thanks to Keith Livingston who has been hosting our website
for many years, and who has generously offered his time and talents
to creating our yahoo group and our website. Thanks to Jackie Foskett
who has been updating our website in 2008.
