Hi Kathy,
This kind of thing is easily fixed. Kids of that age need to be helped to
understand what happened and then to be given resources to empower them to deal
with it.
The best way is to tell them a tailored metaphor.
In the metaphor a similar kid had a similar problem and then got some help to
overcome it. The child will identify with the character in the story and will
believe that they too can learn how to overcome their problem.
