There is another reason for low postings and replies, and that is the tendency
to be 'shot down' when you do. It is an old chestnut, I guess, but it causes me
to be more passive than I would normally be in, say, conversation, when I can be
an opinionated pain in the arse. 

The relative degree of removal, not unlike that when gesticulating from a car,
seems to imbue some repliers with a hostility they may otherwise not display,
which is inhibiting to those of us who just want to discuss, and exchange
opinions.
