All magicians are liars - it's what we do! "Here I have a perfectly ordinary
gentleman's pocket handkerchief".
Here's an extract from Derren's new book:
"While I was a little bolder in my claims at the very start of my career, I
had no desire as I became more successful to pretend that I was something I
was not. So now I clearly frame both live and TV shows as that mixture of
psychology and trickery.....". I recommend the rest of the chapter.

From another point of view, isn't this just another manifestation of an
age-old controversy among magicians. Ethical illusionists have always
opposed people who take stage magic and portray it as evidence of genuine
paranormal powers. At that point the "magician" crosses the boundary into
being a con artist. (See James Randi's writings on Uri Geller.) Taking
magic tricks and passing them off as psychological skills is just a modern
version of this nuisance.
