Hi Nicola

I have helped several people with fear of flying, and they are all
different. I have a fear of flying script, but it can't work if it doesn't
help the individual experiencing the fear in the right way.

One person had fear of flying because she just couldn't believe that tons of
metal can stay up in the air, so after about an hour she became more and
more nervous.

One person had been shut in a cupboard as a child by her brother, and the
consequent inability to control the situation made her so angry that it came
out as fear of flying later. She didn't want to hand over control to a
pilot.

Another feared flying because her former husband very kindly told her he was
leaving her for someone else at the airport just before she had to face a
whole day's journey from Australia to UK. In addition he was a pilot and
when pilots got together, of course the only topic of interest is the near
misses they had experienced. But the root of it was the anger she
experienced for a whole day as she travelled home.

It has fascinated me to explore the root causes of any phobias. So often
they are not directly related to the phobia itself.
