Ray, from an analytical standpoint the repression is held in place by guilt
and fear of abandonment. (Text book answer.) If you want to become well
studied in this area and if you are now a trained hypnotherapist, I suggest
E.A. Barnett's book "Analytical Hypnotherapy." I use in in our course as a
primer on analytical hypnotherapy. Any well trained hypnotherapist is well
served and does well by their clients with a good understanding of
transactional analysis (T.A.) as introduced in this book. One basic concept
that will give an answer to the last part of your question, is that a
repressed emotion will find it's way out in some form of dis-ease or
disease. Which will then result in uncomfortable feelings. I am putting
together a mini-course on "Using Analytical Hypnotherapy" that will become
available as a continuing education seminar. It will be on DVD as well as
VHS for American and European consumption.
I hope this will help a little in answering your question Ray.

Subject: [UKhypno] anxiety lays dormant
Hi maybe it's in the studies somewhere
However, could any one tell me why anxiety due to a repression as a
child lays dormant for so many years? And what causes it to show its
self again in later life? In its various forms
Ray
