Re: [hydrocephalus] hydrokepalus/was ETV info

Ha ha! I swear we could have the same person we are talking about! That is how my daughters neuro pronounces it, with a k sound instead of an s like it should be. He has some kind of foreign accent too so I atribute his mis-pronounciation to this. Not so sure though. It can be so scary to see how uninformed our medical people are. Pam

you reminded me of something kinda funny that happened while Chris was in ICU with the external shunt.  he had gotten pneumonia and a shunt infection and INternal Medicine and Infectious Disease was very busy trying to figure out what made him so sick.

a resident came in to take his history and everything; this guy kept saying "hydrokepalus"-glad he was not from Neurosurgery, huh?  he asked if anyone in the house was sick before Chris was admitted.  we then began what i like to call The Great Thrush Debate:

me;  "well, Dylan (our grandbaby) had thrush, but that was all"
resident:  who is Dylan and why does he have thrush?

me: Dylan is a baby, and he has thrush because he is a baby and babies get thrush

resident:  no.  people only get thrush from broad spectrum antibiotics and inhaled steroids.

me:  um, no.  babies get thrush all the time.

resident:  that is not possible.

me: yea, sure. whatever you say.

the next day:

resident:  are you sure that baby was not on any antibiotics?

me: yes, he is only a few weeks old

resident: people usually don't just get thrush

me: babies do.

resident:  well, i don't have any kids

me:  ahhhh (no kidding)  why don't you check with a pediatrician?  there must be one or two in the building.

resident:  well, i am going to ask my attending.

me:  you do that.

the next day both the resident & the attending physican come in, and we go thru the same dance routine, babies just get thrush, that's not possible, etc etc eetc.

the next day, the resident slinks in the room, tail between his legs.

resident:  i talked to a pediatrician.

me: uh huh?

resident:  so babies just get thrush sometimes, huh?  i never knew that!

me:  and if mom is breast feeding, they can share it back and forth....

Chris:  TOO MUCH INFORMATION!!! TOO MUCH INFORMATION!!!
