I am writing this letter to request your support.
A faculty member at my school (Westchester Community College) has
sent an appeal for assistance. Her 18-month old granddaughter, Eve
Saperstein, is gravely ill with a very rare and aggressive strain of
leukemia. She did not respond to her first round of chemo, and her
only real hope for recovery is a bone marrow transplant.
Unfortunately, she may not have time to wait for a transplant. What
she needs -- desperately -- is a cord blood match (HLA-A, HLA-B, HLA-
C, HLA-DRB1).
Cryobanks International collects, tests and processes cord blood
donations for the National Marrow Donor Program, cost-free for the
donating family. Otherwise, the process is the same as for cord
banking your own blood. Families wishing to donate need to:
(1) Complete the donation paperwork, which can be downloaded
from:
www.cryo-intl.com/enroll/donating/
(2) Have their collection kit available at delivery
(3) Call Cryobanks International within two hours after the
collection of the blood
Donations are banked for the National Marrow Donor Program. Families
wishing to designate that their blood be tested for Eve, need to
specify, "please test to benefit Eve Saperstein at Morgan Stanley
Children's Hospital (Columbia Medical Center)". Cord blood that does
not match Eve's will be banked to benefit other families.
Please educate your expectant families. Cord Blood Donation is cost-
free for donating families. It involves a small amount of paperwork
and can be life saving.
Thank you,
Melissa Creighton
