Henci Goer critiques recent New Yorker article

Dear Friends,

In early October the New Yorker Magazine published an article "How childbirth went industrial."  If you read it, you probably became pretty incensed by the misinformation, omissions and outright lies about childbirth that we have, unfortunately, come to expect from the world of organized medicine. The author, Atul Gawande, is an Assistant Professor of Surgery and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Health Policy and Management, at Harvard Medical School .

Thankfully, Henci Goer has prepared a detailed critique: "How Childbirth Went Industrial: A Deconstruction," and Mothering Magazine has made it available on their website: http://www.mothering.com/articl es/pregnancy_birth/birth_preparation/childbirth-went-industrial.html  Henci's article includes a link to the New Yorker article.

Not only does Henci's article provide a thorough rebuttal of Gawande's assertions, but it also provides all of us a succinct rebuttal of the arguments that typically and frequently come up in the public media about childbirth.   Read it, and keep a copy around for future reference!

Thank you Henci Goer and Mothering Magazine!

Sincerely,
Susan Hodges, "gatekeeper"
