Re: [hudvalleybirthnetwork] Postpartum Depression

Thanks Janet. She is already planning to join the local Mothers of Multiples
group and I will also pass along your info. After working with her a few days,
I'm not sure if it is some depression or just her personality in general. She
did say she was overwhelmed at first, but is now feeling much better. I think I
am just used to my postpartum moms being so grateful for the help and a friend
who she can turn to if she has questions, or just needs to open up emotionally.
This mom was the opposite and seems to look at me as just hired help and not
that friend I'm used to. But I will keep an eye on her! Thanks again.

I have found that just connecting with other moms makes such a difference. This can be a challenge for someone with twins who has a hard time getting out of the house...but there are several great support networks for mothers of multiples. Sometimes just talking with other moms who have gone through the same thing is so helpful, and clarifies for the woman if she is experiencing the normal postpartum "blues" or if it is beyond that.

She is welcome to come to one of the groups that I facilitate at Destination Materinity. The first session is free...and that may be all that it takes for her to connect with other moms for support.

She can feel free to contact me at (914) 645-8822 or at www.newmothersssupport.com
I will look into the contact information for the mothers of multiples.

Asking for some advice - I'm working as a postpartum doula for a mom of
twins. She's showing some warning signs of postpartum depression,
maybe she was just tired and a little "off" while I was there, so I'll
give her a few more days. But my question is this - how do you
approach a mom with what you are observing as an outsider if she is
showing some definite signs and she doesn't realize it or doesn't want
to realize it? Do you talk to her first, maybe question the partner a
bit to see if he's seen any signs of her being depressed? I just don't
want her to feel like I'm judging her and have her jump down my throat
(she's not the friendliest woman on this planet - she doesn't seem to
want to connect very much with me or open up at all). Thanks!
