Friends,
I do hope you will take some time and learn about the moringa tree.
The potential benefits to the people of Haiti are staggering.
It is a project if you are Stateside you can learn about and if you
are already in haiti would be a benefit to the people of Haiti.

The pepto bismal is the only drug in this regimen that we do not buy in Haiti ... the other meds can be purchased in Haiti.

Does anyone out there know a quick treastment for H Pylori? When I was in Leogane in October, Harold Latta told me about a quick treatment, which I wrote down and can't find. We're leaving Sunday and are bringing plenty of PPI's, antibiotics  and antacids, some combination of which should do the trick. I know the standard regimens--I'm hoping for quicK.

Hi All,

This is Joe Markee and I'm in Haiti at the moment and will give you our 'quick treatment for H-pylori'.  Voila the  one-day regimine:

1.   Amoxicillin 500mg capsules #16; 2 grams QID, NOT to be swallowed, rather empty the powder of the 2 grams into juice or water in order to coat the gastric mucosa

2.   Flagyl 500 mg QID

3.   Pepto-Bismol 2 po QID

4.   Any PPI (protein pump inhibitor); we use omeprazole 20 mg BID

Our success is probably in the 65-75% range (we have not studies yet to test this number).  J of Infectious Diseases 2003, 188:1263-1279, quotes a recurrence rate of 30%; my personal feeling is that it provides relief for more than 7-8 months; that's not backed up  either with facts!

Bonne  chance

I don't, but hope you can check on Joseph Sainvil while you are there. He has been having some prostate problems and I think he was headed for surgery. Joseph is well known around HSC and is an intermittent translator for the mobile clinics. Any news on him is appreciated. jv

Gretchen Berggren should be at HSC sometime late this week or early next. She may have some advice on this treatment for H Pylori. jv

Folks,
Those of you in the Northeast who go to Haiti may want to look at
this article.
If you are going to try and use the introductory fare, read the
article completely since there are some little caveats to finding the
fare on the Delta.com site

Introductory fares to Haiti and Bermuda
Delta Airlines just announced new daily service to Bermuda and Haiti
from New York City, and to celebrate, the airline is offering
introductory fares as low as $129 each way.

Dear Friends,
I am blissful to know that the board is working hard to have a new Director at HSC. That will be a great news for all Leoganais and others who used to go to HSC looking for cure. I also appreciate the way you are thinking of Haitians, doing your best to help them have a better living.

Bonjour Katie,

How good to hear from you!  We would so love to see you and meet your sweet little girl!

The concerns expressed in the article are the concerns of CNP Board in regard to those mobile clinics that we sponsor. We are considering a program that would center on three or four villages where there would be follow-up by a team every three months.  This would allow for more appropriate treatments for high blood pressure, diabetes, etc. and we could follow other chronic illness as well in these selected villages.   The down side is that we will not reach as many people.   It will be great for the villages that are chosen, but sad for all the others.

With HSC essentially closed except for meager out patient care and emergency care, the Leogane area is hungry for medical help.  Chuck and I were there Jan. 27-24 and we did two clinics on the hospital compound grounds near the chapel.   One day we saw 250 patients.  On the last day, we saw 350!   We had three dentists working.   Our three physician stations were increased by two with a couple of Haitian physicians who saw patients with us.  Mitch and another team were there two weeks later, and had a similar experience at HSC.     Frankly, CNP has been a lifeline for the hospital .

We are all hopeful that there will be a new Hospital Director installed at HSC this spring who is qualified to do the job.  A candidate that appears to be experienced and competent is being considered by the HSC board and the PCUSA at the present time.  So keep your fingers crossed!    If he is approved, I think we will see a complete overhaul of the hospital.

Take care!

Martha

Yes, indeed, Katie....It is good to hear from you. I was on Mitch's trip week before last and we too worked at the Hospital. I do agree, generally, with the article you presented and I think folks affiliated with CNP are looking strongly at the concept Martha has described. Hope our paths cross soon.  Jack V.

Good to hear from you. This is an excellent article and highlights many of the issues we grapple with. We try to bring at least a 3 months supply of antihypertensive meds for each person in childproof bottles. We have also initiated a simple medical record system in Lazile, where we go every 6 months. We leave the records with the patients and the patients hang onto them and are great about bringing them with them the next time we come.  I would LOVE to see someone organize the moble clinic effort so a group goes out to the same villages every 3 months. We could of course not visit as many places but would have a much mre significant, sustained impact on the places we do go to.

Has anyone out there had similar thoughts? Anybody ready to step up and organize?

Thanks, I had received the flyer.

Here's a couple pictures you might like to see. The Baccalaureate

A. Information about the hospital St. Croix in Leogane is our primary focus.
General information about mission/healthhcare opportunities in Haiti, travel
information, and the current state of affairs in Haiti are all legitimate topics
for discussion.

Q. Can I post questions to this list?
A. Sure, it's encouraged. But remember there is an etiquette to
using mail lists and news groups. You might want to read this
article about posting questions on online forums:
http://www.tuxedo.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html

Q. What topics are not appropriate for the group?
A. While we are open to a variety of topics, the focus is on medical, health
care, nutrition and outreach in Haiti. The general political and civil
atmosphere in Haiti are also acceptable topics. The group should not be used for
marketing related subjects or any sort of spam. Individuals that use the group
for such proposes will be banned from the group. Any questionable posts will be
deleted.

Q. Are messages for the group Moderated?
A. In general the answer is no, but the recent rise in spam has forced us to
implement moderating for new members. Everyone is welcome to join but your
initial messages will have to be approved by a moderator before they are posted
to the group. We regret this step but our group is not to be used as a conduit
for junk email to our members.

Dear Ruth,

Joe and I would love to be there for this great occasion.  I’ve ‘saved the date’ for a long-time, but unfortunately we will not be able to come.  We are planning on being in Haiti for about 6 weeks in Feb/March with two medical teams.

Please know that our prayers are with you.  I still remember the JOY when the foundation stone was laid in June 1998.  This is truly a ‘dream come true’!

Love,
Linda & Joe Markee

The Faculté des Sciences Infirmières de l'Université Episcopale d'Haïti (FSIL) is the first baccalaureate nursing program in Haiti.  It started on January 10, 2005, under Doyenne (Dean) Hilda Alcindor with a Governing Board, made up of Haitian and American members and chaired by Dr. Donna Martsolf who is a Professor of Nursing at Kent State University and Vice-Chair Dr. Jessie Colin who is a Professor of Nursing at Barry University.  FSIL was built with grant funding from USAID/ASHA through the Medical Benevolence Foundation (MBF) and major continuing funding from MBF and the Haiti Nursing Foundation.
