A lot of countries have that rule – I
know from recent experience that
To add confusion, some countries count 6
months from entry, and others 6 months from planned exit from the country.
Brazil requires (or at least used to
require) two blank pages in your passport when you get there – room for
visas to be added, I suppose.
I think the rationale is that the nation
receiving you does not want any problem getting you out of their country. It’s

Over the years we have been advised not to travel on a
passport that was
going to expire within the next 6 months. I suspect that with the
continuing efforts to increase security, such as needing a passport to
get into
they let slide in the past. I don't know why 6 months but it's the
government.
It just reinforces the need to plan ahead and keep your passport
current. Be sure to remind less frequent travelers to check expiration
dates. I think they advise 4 to 6 weeks for processing in this country,
who knows what the processing time in
