Sové Lavi Receives Proclamation for World Water Day 2007
(Southlake, Texas): Organisation Sové Lavi (Saving Lives) was presented a Proclamation from the City of Southlake, Texas for the work they are doing in Haiti on behalf of World Water Day 2007. Kimberly Siméus, Program Director for Sové Lavi, accepted the Proclamation from Andy Wambgnass, Mayor of Southlake.
"On behalf of the people we serve in Haiti, we are honored to receive this Proclamation and thank Mayor Wambgnass and the City Council for bringing the importance of World Water Day to the forefront for the residents of Southlake, Siméus said.
"In Haiti, 35% of children die before the age of 5 because of water-borne disease. Providing clean water systems is a passion for Sové Lavi and completely in line with our mission. Clean water saves lives and gives mothers hope that their children will be able to go to school and live full and productive lives," Siméus said. "Clean water is key to breaking the cycle of poverty in Haiti and all third world countries."
World Water Day is an international day of observance and action to draw attention to the plight of the more than 1 billion people worldwide that lack access to safe drinking water. The lack of clean drinking water is estimated to kill almost 4500 children per day. Many women and young children walk six miles a day to retrieve water for their families. Due to this manual labor, these women and children are prevented from pursuing an education, maintaining their households or earning additional income.
In honor of the poor who walk six miles a day to retrieve water for their families, Kimberly and Dumas Siméus joined Jack and Annette Vaughn, who are on the Sové Lavi Advisory Council, for a six mile walk in Dallas on March 22.
Sové Lavi initiated a clean water project in Haiti in 2005. To date, 600 low cost and easy-to-use water filtration systems have been distributed to families, providing clean drinking water to approximately 6,000 poor Haitians. An additional 1400 water filtration systems will be distributed in the next 4 years. The second phase of Sové Lavi's water project is to drill wells so that all beneficiaries have easy access to water. Sové Lavi will drill the first well this year thanks to a generous donation from Francey Beall and Kathryn Rafter of Dallas.
Organisation Sové Lavi is a 501c3 non-profit organization that has been in existence since 1999. In addition to the water project, Sové Lavi operates a full-time medical clinic in Haiti that supports a community of 30,000 and treats upwards of 10,000 patients annually.
