What follows is an series of email messages(3) that help to clarify
the status of things in Haiti revolving around the death of Joseph
Dorvil. Most of you will have already seen these messages but I will
post them here just to be sure.

At present continued prayer for Cathy and Joseph's family is the most
productive action we can take until we hear more specific requests
from them. -- Mike

Subject: Please Wait for Cathy's Wishes to Be Known
Date: Wed, 15 Dec 2004 17:22:48 -0600

Dear All,
This is Susan checking e-mail while Dan is in PAP with Cathy at the
UN. We have not heard from them all day, so I don't know what kind
of cooperation they got. Hopefully much. They were going to the
airport to get Joseph's brother and Fr. Tom after their meeting, so
we expect them back shortly.

I would ask that you wait to know Cathy's wishes on 2 things:

1. The HHH situation:

It did take a long time for us to get the HHH information, but once
we had it they were extraordinarily helpful and compassionate with
Cathy. Given the condition of their workers, I truly never expected
that they would allow us access at all. They were both
psychiatrically hospitalized, and one is still unable to talk, so I
truly thought they would shield them from Cathy's inquiries in order
to protect their privacy and preserve their fragile mental health.
We were all amazed that they allowed her access to the one worker,
and even more amazed that the girl has sufficient stamina to talk to
Cathy. At this moment I think Cathy's inital frustration has given
way to feelings of profound gratitude to them for what they did in
helping her access information. Without their compassion and
assistance we would undoubtedly still not know what had happened to
Joseph. We would still be looking for him.

Before anyone does or says anything remotely negative to HHH, I would
ask--please-- that you wait to see what Cathy would like you to do--
if anything. As I said, as of 7 AM today, she was simply grateful to
know something. Without their cooperation we would know nothing, and
they were very apologetic about the circumstances.

At the moment Dan and I are profoundly grateful for their compassion
in the moment that they were contacted. Things should certainly not
have unfolded as they did, in terms of information, but we do not
think that information was intentionally withheld.

Please wait until after things have settled a bit at this end before
pursuing anything. When she has time to focus a bit, please let
Cathy give some direction on how, if at all, she wants to pursue it.
Right now we need not to place any more burdens on her until Joseph's
memorial or funeral is past.

I will be sure that she knows that you are all concerned, and will
let you know if she wants to take any steps.

#2: An announcement on the CNP Web page

I saw the e-mail about putting up an announcement about Joseph. I
would like to ask her about that, too. Right now she is not
responding to most e-mails as she has no emotional energy to do so.
However, I do know that when she accesses her e-mail, she does it
through the web site, so I don't know how she would feel about seeing
such an announcement when she opens the page. I will ask her at some
time tonight and get back to you.

Thanks. We appreciate giving her space to do what she needs to do,
in the greatest comfort we can provide. Dan and I share your
feelings about all of this, but as you know, she is a woman with
strong ideas and opinions, and I feel confident she will want to
weigh in on both of these issues.

God bless you all for your loving concern.

Susan

Hi all,

I hope it is not offensive to anyone that I share a little of my
confusion and anger. I can't be with you all in person, so I resort
to email.

I've been thinking about when to correspond with this organization
after the shock and pain had died down a bit. My strong feeling is
that it is egregious that they knew of this incident since Saturday
afternoon and did not contact HSC, at the very least. I feel so sorry
that Cathy and we knew nothing for so many days, and that it was
Cathy who had to discover this news by way of tracking Joseph's
outgoing calls from the phone company. I hold the director, or
whomever else is in charge at Healing Hands responsible for this
negligence that has caused so much additional pain. (And, per Jess'
email, I ask myself how the director, Jan, could not have followed up
on the condition of these two women once evacuated?)

But perhaps I'm not thinking clearly and have misplaced anger. Thank
you for this email and for your call, Jess. I welcome your correction
of my thoughts if I am off-base.

Kathryn

All,

As I sat at my desk this morning still reflecting on the tragic
incident with Joseph, it occurred to me that there were 2 others in
the car with Joseph and what has happened to them. I telephoned the
Healing Hands for Haiti and spoke with their Director of Operations,
Jan Groves.

She enlightened me a bit about the 2 ladies in the car with Joseph.
They are both Canadian physical therapists, one on her 6th trip to
Haiti and one on her 1st. Both were part of a medical team there
from Canada. Joseph picked them up at the HHH compund in PAP early
Saturday morning. It is about 1/2 mile below the Montana Hotel on
John Brown Blvd. They actually violated policy by going with Joseph
and no one knew that they were gone until much later in the day.
Oddly, there was a record made of Joseph's entry and exit of the
compound and the description and license of the truck.

During the incident, they were robbed and set free on foot where the
incident occurred. They wandered around for 2 hours trying to find
someone to help them but everyone ran away. They finally found a man
that took them to a telephone and they called the HHH compound. They
were finally found by the Chilean UN forces and taken back to the HHH
compound. They also tried to reach the Canadian Embassy with no
success.

Once back at HHH, one of the doctors determined that they were in bad
shape and should return to Canada for treatment. The Canadian Agency
for Foreign Affairs got the necessary clearance for them to board the
Air Canada flight from PAP to Montreal. Jan had no current
information on the condition of either woman.

Healping Hands for Haiti is a nondemominational effort headquartered
in Salt Lake City, UT. They help with medical rehab of children and
have strong ties with St. Vincents in PAP. At the conclusion of our
call we traded names and telephone numbers and agreed to stay in
touch. We both agreed that we must not let the Saturday events blunt
the efforts in Haiti and pray that Joseph's death will somehow serve
some greater purpose.
