Dec 11 from Martha Sternbergh
It is with profound grief that I must tell you that Joseph Dorvil,
Cathy Speraw's husband, and a driver from HSC (name unknown at this
point) were murdered this morning. Susan Speraw called us after
talking to Cathy. She said that it was her understanding that this
had happened somewhere between HSC and Port-au-Prince, but had no
more information about the specifics of where or under what
conditions.
We ask for your prayers for Cathy, her family, for Joseph's family,
for the CNP Program, for the hospital, and for Jack LaFontant.
This is a terrible personal tragedy, and a tradedy for Haiti and for
the hospital.
We will send more details as they are available.

We are all devastated. We finally got in touch with Mitch who is in
Las Vegas on hospital business. He talked to Jack LaFontant early
tonight, and Jack confirmed that Joseph and two other "light skinned"
men were in the CNP truck in route to the CDC salt factory north of
PAP. Joseph apparently was driving on the edges of Cite Soleil when
the crime happened. The story Jack told Mitch is that Joseph's
cousin called Joseph's cell phone and the perpetrator of the crime
answered. He told him that Joseph wouldn't stop the truck so he
killed him, but let the other two go. No one seems to know the
identity of the other men, or where they are at this time. Father
Tom Streit said he did not think they were from CDC. The gunman
would not agree to surrender Joseph's body, and made some statement
about all they wanted was to have Aristide back.
Jack Lafontant called both the Haitian police and the UN Forces to
ask them to go and find Joseph's body and investigate the crime, and
neither would do so. It is horrible. We are told that Cathy is
at the Gates House in Leogane. Susan and Dan Speraw are in route to
Haiti and should be there by tomorrow noon. Katie Griggs left HSC
for the holidays on Friday. Jack LaFontant is at his home in PAP.
Jess talked to Albert who was in Leogane, but had not personally
talked with Cathy.
We had a great chat with Joseph when we were in Haiti in November,
and I had a happy e-mail from Cathy just this morning as we were
plotting a way to get her interviewed on the Oprah show.
The events of today are so unbelievable and heartbreaking. We will
share news as we have it.

======= Sunday Afternoon =====
It is now afternoon on Sunday, December 12th, I do not have any
information beyond that presented above. When more information
becomes known, I would ask all of you to share it by replying to this
message.
Please keep Cathy, her family, and Joseph's family in your prayers.
Continue to pray for the hospital and all its employees; as well as
the general situation in Haiti.
