Dear Holt: I am the leader of the St Pauls medical group mission to Hopital St Croix and we are going to Haiti Feb. 12th. This is our 4th trip.
You have several good questions which I try to address the best we can.
We have purchased generic drugs and can have more than enough to treat up to 900 pts and still have enough to leave meds for the hospital when we leave. The cost of the meds and lab supplies are about $5000.00 and we have enough room in our carry on bags for the whole works. We notify Jack in advance of the amount of supplies so we don't have trouble at custom's. We raise the money. The supplies from MAP are to limited in our view and generics must go directly to the hospital and I haven't figured out how to arrange that. We do take some samples but limit it toPPi's and antibiotics. I could give you are entire formulary if you like. We do take 20,000 iron, about 12,000 amoxicillin, 4,000 doxycycline. I could give you our entire formulary if you wish. We do buy chloroguine and worming meds in Haiti because they are to expensive in the states. We buy them after arrival and haven't had any problems yet.
We used Lindane on our first trip but have gone to Ivermectin because it is oral, safe and easy. I would recommend The Travel and Tropical Medicine Manual by Jong and McMullen, Publisher Saunders.
We also take finger blood drop testing for Malaria, HIV, Glucose, Hb and UA dip stick. Malaria is a Antigen test and HIV is antibody test.
We take everything because we don't want to be a burden to the hospital and leave everything to the hospital when we leave.
I'll be gone this next week but could talk to you.
Sincerely, Jim Wierman , Box 378, Dowagiac, Mich. 49047. Phone 269-782-6563

Hello all,
Our group from Fort Worth will be visiting the hospital in Feb. for
our third visit. I am trying to learn better ways to develope a
formulary for the mobile clinics. We have been using travel packs
from MAP international which, while pretty good with most
antibiotics, doesn't include meds for STD's.
Would anyone like to share advice on your formulary and how you put
it together?
Any advice on where to obtain doxycyclin and ciprofloxacin cheaply?
Does anyone buy some formulary drugs in Haiti and if so how?
We have used Haitian Lindane before but I really don't want to
continue using this drug because of toxicity and environmental
reasons. Any advice on other scabicides and where to obtain them?
We commonly utilize and, to some extent, stock the med room in the
living quarters. If a group is going the week of 1/31/05 could I
impose on you to let me know what antibiotics are in the room?
Finally, we would love a dentist to join us. on 2/5/05. If you know
of one interested please let me know.
Thanks for any advice you may share,
Holt Daniel
