Dear Jeri - Great to have this information! It gives leads for me to
follow that I haven't known about before.
Members, note that in The Book (page 287c)
original revue by Arthur Winsten of NY Post on Dec 26 l947, has not
yet been located. It has not been filed in any Library List that I
have been able to find; my librarian has also been uable to locate
it, and is mystified ... for this should be no problem! We've spent
hours looking and inquiring, with negative results.
All later reviews differ significantly from the Winsten Review, which
was highly laudatory. Did any of you SEE the movie, in its original
form? In its current VERY REVISED FORM it offers no significant
cause for enthusiastic interest. WHY THE DIFFERENCE? Why in the
world would a GREAT (and very high cost production) be made and
shown - only to be degraded later?
Richard Gano (executor) of Howard's estate in California, was
reported in New York Times soon after Howard's reported death to
have petitioned and received approval from the Court, to sell
three Hughes Movies - including The Outlaw. WHY IS IT SO DIFFICULT
TO FIND OUT WHAT THOSE OTHER TWO MOVIES WERE, TO WHOM THEY WERE
SOLD, AND WHAT DISPOSITION HAS BEEN MADE OF THEM SINCE?
Why did that Great Movie, Captain From Castile - filmed and
introduced WITHIN A YEAR of Shellabarger's book, DISAPPEAR FROM
PUBLIC VIEW immediately after Howard's reported death .... and
resurface 23 years later in such degraded form? The last 20 minutes
of the original was removed entirely.
I am very anxious to unravel this mystery and appreciate every
assistance to find the answers.
Sincerely van
