McGraw Hill announced upcoming publication of Clifforf Urving written
"autobiography of Howard Hughes." Since Mr Hughes had been in total
seclusion for the past many years (last interviewed reportedly by
McCulloch of Time Kife Magazine in 1954) interest in the facts of
this fanous Multibillionaire's life, took on international public
interest perhaps unequalled by all other events. The book came under
massive resistence to its being published and its author, his wife
Edith and business associate, Suskind, were indicted on 14 State
and Federal Felony charges to which they subsequently
entered "guilty" pleas. The book itself was totally suppressed-but
for leakages (mysteriously) to some official and some private
sources. It seems incredible, in retrospect, to consider that events
surrounding blatant outright suppression of this book, and by such
sources as those directly active in its suppression-were able to
successfully accomplish their ill famed purpose in a nation proud
of its freedom of expression constitutional commitments. It is yet
to be hoped that proper investigation by appropriate legal
authorities, shall yet deal equitably in this matter. Until it is
properly resolved no one can count on freedom from unlawful
molestation by powerful forces to whom government under law is
meaningless, and who by brute power and clever subterfuge are able
to commit the most despicable of crimes, with impunity.
