We are researching ways to put the pediatric seminars online for distance learning. All of our seminars from this year have been recorded. Do any of you know anyone with expertise who can help us with this? We can put them up on our website ourselves or possibly use a service that does it for us? Any ideas? We would like to get this information out there to all of the people who could not attend in person.

Dr. Neustaedter,

I do a lot with online video training and seminars. It really depends on how "interactive" you want them to be or if you just want the conferences recorded and then streamed online. If the later is the case, I have a large server that would allow you to do so. Just let me know what you have in mind.

The only interactive parts we need are the ability to go through the power point slides independently as needed along with the audio and rewinding audio.

Very admiral.  To get continuing-ed credits however, you'd need State Assoc, licensing boards, or schools to support you.  And since most of them make money doing that already, it's an uphill battle, since you are the competition.

We struggled with that on our website (www.chiro.org) and finally threw in the towel.  If you have a close buddy on a State Board, mayber you'll fare better than we did.

If your insterested just let me know and I can have my IT guys call you to discuss how it could be done.

Hi all-
I recently received a call from some parents of a brother and sister who
recently
developed uveitis. I have not seen them in clinic yet, but was hoping to
prepare for our
upcoming visit by inquiring to see if anyone has experience with uveitis in
general and
some thoughts on both children developing it around the same time. The girl,
who is 9, is
RF neg, HLA B27 neg, toxo neg, lyme neg, B Henselae neg, ANA + 1:80 homogenous
but
ds DNA negative, anticardiolipin/antiphospho ab neg with normal CBC, CMP and esr
of 6
most recently. The boy has refused all blood work. They have a rheumatologist
and
ophthamologist following them. From what I understand there are no systemic
signs or
symptoms.

I don't think anyone has checked for syphillis or TB, but those are really
unlikely. My other
thought was West Nile or some yet to be defined autoimmune condition that hasn't
revealed itself. What other work-up would you consider? And then treatment
ideas?

I was thinking that the boy might need some hypnosis or guided imagery even to
be
convinced to get bloodwork done. Then perhaps food allergy testing (IgE)
elimination diet
followed by an anti-inflammatory diet, omega 3s, perhaps probiotics. Anyone
know a
good homeopath in Orange county?

I appreciate any and all input and will keep you posted as I learn more.
Thanks.

I am a student of naturopathy and have a 2 year old son, Max.
About a month ago i noticed a rash on his scalp in the parietal region near the top.  It is about the size of a small kiwi and seemed to come out of nowhere.  It can be pink to red and appear slightly bumpy sometimes.  There is also some hair loss on the area.  Tinea Capitas is my best guess and i have treated it for a month now with a number of different things.  Tea tree oil, colloidal silver (500ppm), oil of oregano and now most recently a salve made from the herbs chaparral, burdock and wormwood.  There was a dramatic effect from the salve with alot of separated crust on top in the morning.  Once we combed it off, the rash was somewhat angry still.  Is this a good sign?  Any suggestions about what and how much on these treatments?  Any ideas besides fungal?  I read it could take months to heal.

The two major things that I see on kids' scalps like that (though I do neurology primarily rather than solely general peds) is either tinea or resistant strep infection.  I've seen it a few times, and it can be pretty aggressive. It would be worth knowing.  Manuka honey or oil is great for either.  For fungal, coconut oil with rosemary is another great salve as well, adding extra virgin organic coconut oil to his food or smoothies is a great way to get some antifungal medium chain fatty acids on board.  Either salve is messy, but if you can convince him to sleep with a shower cap or something on his head, it is great to leave it all night.

Ultimately, the next question to ask is why is he susceptible to this, and is he having immune dysregulation like so many children?

Your son's rash sounds like the rash that was on my son's head a few
months ago, nothing topical that I tried worked for him but it
cleared up in about 10 days once I started giving him saccharomyces
boulardii and biotin. I chose those on the guess that it was a
systemic yeast/fungal infection which I figure now was correct. I
used Klaire labs for the S. boulardii and gave him 1/2 capsule a day,
and 500 mcg of biotin a day and I discontinued both after about 2
months. The rash looked like it was coming back once so I gave those
2 things again for about 5 days and it hasn't been back in months.

Thanks for all your suggestions.  The salve i mentioned in my first post has gotten some amazing results.  In three days the spot is almost back to skin color and skin is returning to normal texture as well.  I am a little unsettled that he was suseptible to such an aggressive rash.  We feel we have made all the right decisions about diet, breast fed for 14 months and did not vaccinate.  His diet has been 90% organic and has never taken anything more powerful than infant motrin as far as over the counter (and only about 3 times to break a fever past 101).  I do wonder if he got a bit too much sugar in his diet (all natural sugars), and have finally convinced his mother to stop with the dairy.  Can you tell me a bit more about the immune dysregulation?

Hi Everyone.

16 mo old girl weighs 18lbs 7oz and is 28 inches
Her pediatrician is concerned with her height and weight and her
mother is looking for some direction in regards to this. Any
suggestions on supplementation, herbs, or things to be concerned
with? I have read on some posts here about an herbal supplement
called grow and thrive. Would that be indicated in this case?
Thank you!
Carri Tanaka, DC

A little history:
She is currently taking a infant multi-vitamin, omega three's,
and pro-biotics. Drinks rice milk and eats pastas, veggies, meat and
fruits. Chiropractic adjustments 1/week for about 5 weeks now.
She was born vaginally with no known complications. Mother did have
an epidural. Was not breastfed for more than three weeks b/c mother
states she never latched on correctly. Was formula fed thereafter
and had digestive difficulties.
At thirteen months of age she was hospitalized for bronchiolitis.
According to her mother the child has not been on antibiotics, but
the pediatrician has told her that her child will most likely become
asthmatic. Mother also states she frequently has a cough and/or cold.
Was having difficulty with sleep however no longer an issue since
treatment at our office began.

Case Jet G., DOB 6/3/2007

12 mo old boy

I first saw Jet at 7 months of age in Jan 20008. At that time he was taking Reglan and Prilosec for screaming episodes with back arching and some spitting up. He seems very uncomfortable most of time, despite his drugs. He was disinterested in eating, actually refused to eat and was very small for age at 12 lb 14 oz with some gross motor developmental delays (kind of floppy and not sitting up on his own at all). He was getting Good Start formula and home prepared solids and fruit juice.

He was born by C section because of breech presentation with Apgars of 2/10. Then hospitalized for 8 days on antibiotics. He had recent x-rays, which were negative.

I began treating him with Grow and Thrive + Tummy Tamer, cold liver oil, Glutamine 1 tsp/day, switched him to organic formula, Colocynth 30 prn for discomfort, and acupuncture St 36, Sp 6 and sho ni shin.

Within a week of beginning his treatment program he was happier and more content and smiling much more.

Within two weeks he was eating more food and crying much less.

Within a month he was completely content and happy with no more crying. He continued to gain weight, and by 9 months he was 14 lb 2 oz.

But the next month he had less interest in food and had actually lost weight (13 lb 12 oz). I then gave him Replenish Essence + Grow and Thrive, which did help his appetite.

A stool test at 10 months showed +2 candida albicans and +3 geotrichum candidum, low chymotrypsin of 3 (with normal >9) and low SIgA of 52 (with normal >400).

I then gave him a Orthobiotic (probiotic with saccharomyces) 2 scoops/day, and digestive enzymes with meals. Also a whey protein powder supplement (Whey Cool) to add to his formula.

By 11 months he was eating much better and still symptom-free. My concern now is his development. He likes to stand, but is still not sitting, and does not feed himself or have a pincer grasp. Estimated gross motor development at 5 month level. His receptive language is approx 9 mos. And his expressive language 9 mos. His weight is still only 14 lb 6 oz.

I would like to refer him for OT and a good developmental evaluation at this time. Any other suggestions would also be welcome.

This child very likely needs chiropractic care. C-section births are
about as traumatic as they come and with that low of an apgar along
with the digestive problems and now developmental delay, I would
highly recommend a chiropractor with peds training in your area to
the family.

I would think about doing a trial off of dairy.  A child with ongoing gut issues will often have an intolerance (if not true allergy) to milk protein, which is plain difficult to handle for many people.  Gluten also falls in this category if dairy is not helpful as a second trial.  No matter what a RAST or skin testing (or IgG testing if you do that) shows, I find elimination to be the gold standard.

I avoid replacing dairy with soy, as there is so much cross-reactivity.  I do a trial of rice milk with added rice protein powder, and a mix of flax oil and coconut oil (esp good if he still has anything fungal going on).

I see a good number of kids in my practice improve developmentally by eliminating one or the other of these foods.  Obviously corn and soy or both big offenders as well, but I'm assuming this baby is exposed mainly to the dairy or wheat.

A stool test at 10 months showed +2 candida albicans and +3 geotrichum candidum, low chymotry ps in of 3 (with normal >9) and low SIgA of 52 (with normal >400).

I then gave him a Orthobiotic (probiotic with saccharomyces) 2 scoo ps /day, and digestive enzymes with meals.

I know a 4 year old boy who has just recently been diagnosed with mild
autism. His parents would like to know more about the role that
homeopathy can play in helping with his symptoms.

Overall, the boy is quiet, and prefers to be left alone. He can
calculate in his head and LOVES his calculator but doesn't engage in
conversation with others very well.

I am more apt to recommend that the parent use orthomolecular
principles as this has been successful for me in treating autistic
children. But, in keeping with the parents wishes, I would like to know
if you have had any successes using single and/or combinations of
homeopathic remedies for the autism spectrum.

Thanks for your help.

I've seen some very interesting results with homotoxicology, or sequential homeopathy though I haven't used this approach myself yet.  This is not classical homeopathy -- I know there are classical homeopaths out there who work with children on the spectrum; I've seen pretty uneven results there, but nothing like the nutritional approach (though the two are often combined).

I was just at the Defeat Autism Now conference in Chicago (in May)
and they had a group of ladies (homeopathics) who deal mostly with
Autism. They are not classical homeopaths. They use multiple
remedies at once. They are also not cheap. But they can tailor
their program so that almost any parent can afford it. They are in
Houston, TX but do phone consults all over the country. You can get
their info at:
www.homeopathyhouston .com . I have no affiliation with them and no
financial ties. I also have no experience with them but most parents
I have seen in my clinic have heard of them or tried them at some
point.

I can tell you that I have never seen homeopathy cure Autism in and
of itself. It must be used as an adjunct therapy. Tell the parents
that their best bet is to find a Defeat Autism Now doctor or
practitioner to get him on the road to recovery. If he is only 4,
and has a mild case...his prognosis is very good. But time is of the
essence, testing needs to be done to determine what the major factors
are (allergies, leaky gut, leaky brain, dysbiosis, heavy metals
etc)...and therapy needs to be started as soon as possible.

Good luck,

Amy Lansky, PhD., has written a book entitled, "Impossible Cure: The
Promise of Homeopathy" detailing her son's recovery from autism using
homeopathy. Her website is http://www.renresearch.com/.

Homeopath and filmmaker Carol Boyce MCH, CCH, RSHom (NA) is currently
making a film showing autism cures through homeopathy in conjunction
with the Royal London Homeopathic Hospital. The rough cut of this
documentary can be seen at www.savingalostgeneration.com.

Amy Rothenberg and her husband Paul Herscu are both classical
homeopaths who have treated autism cases successfully. They practice
in Enfield, Connecticut, and their website is www.nesh.com.

And I have met many other professional homeopaths who successfully
treat autism with classical homeopathy. Whether it was used in
conjunction with other therapies, I don't know, but in my own practice
I would certainly incorporate nutritional support along with any other
modalities I would think would be useful on an individual basis.

Hello -

I am going to be seeing an 11 year old girl with SVT for anxiety.

Anxiety is a symptom and a side effect of the medication ( Antenol).
She was diagnosed one and a half years ago. Her current symptoms are
anxiety and difficulty sleeping (another side effect of the
medication). Her father has heart issues due to cholesterol, but her
mother was not clear.

I discussed breathing and meditation techniques for the anxiety and
helping to sleep. And acupuncture and possible herbs for her heart.

Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

Is this truly SVT or "sinus tachycardia"; there's quite a difference in the approach and treatment!

Hi there. I was wondering if there are people recommending glutathione
to their patients - what form people are using. My understanding is
that you have to give a precursor rather than glutathione itself- and
that certain options include Whey & NAC. Is this true? I also remember
from the Functional Medicine Peds class something called Ready-Serve
Glutathione and wondering if anyone knows of this. I was wanting to
work more with it for my patients with detoxifying issues- but was a
bit confused on what the best form was to give. Any help on how on
what form and also what brands people like would be great. Thank you.
