The Sierra Club hikes are open to anyone. You do not need to be a
member to participate. The next Tuesday & Wednesday hikes are
determined each week after the hikes are completed. Then, Gary Felsman
of the Sierra Club is notified and he sends the next weeks hike info
out to a list. If you want to be added to that email list, just send
Gary your email address. I talked with him tonight at the Wednesday
hike and he will be glad to add anyone that wants the hike details.
This way you can get the info when he sends it out without the delay
of me reposting it to hikemorrobay group. Also, don't worry, your
email will only be used for the Tuesday & Wednesday notice. No other
junk gets sent from that list. Gary's email is gfelsman@...

The Tuesday, July 26 4:00 hike will be at Montana de Oro again. This
time meet at the Sand Spit parking lot about a half mile inside the
park. We will hike down the stairs and north along the beach to the
jetty or until people decide to turn back.
Not sure yet where the Wednesday hike will be.

Saturday, July 2, 2005,  9AM-3PM, Montana de Oro Hike:  "A Peak, a Creek, and a Bluff"

Please join us on "A Peak, a Creek, and a Bluff Hike" at Montana de Oro,  and optionally shoot photos of the spectacular views of ocean, mountains, and oaks as we climb to Oat's Peak and reach the coastal bluffs via the lush riparian habitat of Coon Creek Trail.  Hike back along the bluffs to our starting point.  Bring lunch, water, binoculars, and camera.  Hiking boots are necessary.  Meet at the Visitor's Center (Ranch house), Montaña de Oro State Park. (*Strenuous) 9 mi., 6 hrs.

Led by Docents Norma Wightman (lead) and Mike Baird (sweep).

Note, this is an aggressive hike.  You must be fit, and have proper hiking boots and water.  Trail conditions in places are poor (overgrown, loose footing).  You will likely get some ticks on this hike, and will have some exposure to poison oak.  Long pants are recommended.

REMINDER - This is one of my favorite hikes in the area. Please
join us...
Sat. May 14th, 2005 I will co-lead a walk-hike with Norma Wightman
(primary lead) on the steep Southern Route up Valencia Peak... at
Montaña de Oro State Park. This is a State Park-sponsored hike,
which leaves promptly at 9 AM - This is an "interpreted hike" which
means we stop a bit for some docent explanations... the hike is also
posted at http://www.morrobaymuseum.org/adventures/ along with all
the other hikes and walks in the State Parks Central Coast
Adventures with Nature series.

Southern Route to Valencia Peak -- Enjoy coastal and mountain
vistas of the southern area of the park enroute to Valencia Peak.
Deep ravines and sharp ridges tell a geologic history of uplift and
erosion. Seasonal wildflowers and sheltered clusters of coastal live
oak punctuate the coastal scrub community. Meet at the Coon Creek
parking lot at the far south end of Montaña de Oro State Park.
Bring
water, lunch and binoculars. Wear hiking boots. Walking stick
recommended but optional.(*S) 4 mi., 3-4 hr.

Pam Alesescu, Welcome to our hiking group.

You are very welcome to initiate hikes by posting to this group. It had become
inactive in the past, but we are trying to revive it.

The State Parks docents (of whom I am one) give many hikes and walks - listed at
http://www.morrobaymuseum.org/adventures/ (some of them are slow due to
interpretation given... some are called "hiukes" which are more
exercise-related)

The Los Osos Fitness roup does monthly hikes, and you do not have to be a member
to join:

Tom, yes, please do join us at: April 16 Sat 9:00 am Hike Barranca Loop.

This is a State Park's sponsored hike...

See http://www.morrobaymuseum.org/adventures/

-- attendance is usually 2-6 people on this longer hike... most park visitors
are looking for shorter hikes which draw 5-10 people typically.

The meeting place is easy enough to find. If you watch your odometer, 2.3 miles
form the entry gets you to the trail head. If you look at the maps mentioned
below, you will see that the Ridge Trail head is just maybe ¼ mile north of the
ranger ranch house which is opposite Spooner's Cove. If you miss the trail and
see the ranger house, just head back, and the trail is at the top of the hill,
north of Islay Creek road, which is a vehicle-capable road that runs north of
Islay Creek. You can look for my '96 Gray Land Cruiser at the Trail Head (it
has dual kayak racks on top). Bring a snack, water, hiking boots... some like
to use walking sticks. If you like wildflowers, there will be many on the way
along Ridge Trail (some of the best in the park), and some like to photograph...
we gladly stop for such things.

Please join us... On Saturday April 16, 2005, at 9 AM, I'm leading a fairly
strenuous 4,5 - 5 hour 8 mile hike in Montaña de Oro onto the Barranca Loop.

A map of the park can be seen at

<http://morro-bay.com/photos-maps/maps/montana-de-oro-rangers-map.jpg>

and come out on Islay Creek Road. This docent-led State Park walk is one of the
few that are billed as "non-interpreted" and is a "hike-exercise-oriented" walk.
We walk at a fairly fast pace and rest infrequently.

Hike Barranca Loop: Great exercise, great companionship, and spectacular ocean,
mountain, and canyon views. On this vigorous hike, you will view Montaña de Oro
and Morro Bay from the Ridge and Barranca trails while enjoying wildflowers,
birds, and native vegetation. Bring water and lunch. Wear hiking boots. Meet
at Ridge Trail parking lot 2.3 miles south of park entrance. 1,000 foot

Sorry Mike, but will be out of town until April 1st. Question: Are there
hikes ever planned to the lesser Morros...Cerro Romauldo or Chumash Peak? I
understand
Hollister Peak is not possible (???).

Alex, Sorry, can't paddle, as I'm leading a hike this morning Sat. 3-26-05 in
Montana de Oro... hope to hook up soon...

If anyone wanto to come to my hike they are welcome:

Our organized hikes are all listed at http://www.morrobaymuseum.org/adventures/

Tomorrow, Sat 3-26-05 I'm co-leading a hike up Coon Creek at Montana de Oro...
we leave at 9 AM... 3.25 hours ... please do join us. Wear long pants, as there
is some poison oak around.
26 Sat 9:00 am Hike Coon Creek Zehnder & Baird
Hike Coon Creek On this brisk hike get some good exercise with other
outdoor-loving companions. While exploring the riparian landscape along Coon
Creek, admire a variety of wild flowers, berries, shrubs, & trees. Meet in
Montaña de Oro State Park at the end of Pecho Road in the Coon Creek parking
lot. Bring water & snack, sturdy walking shoes. (*H) 6 mi., 3.5 hr.

You take the road to the very end ( way past the ranch house and Spooner's cove)
where you can't drive any further, and we will be there.

My "outdoor" tab http://morro-bay.com/outdoor/ <http://morro-bay.com/outdoor/>
has maps of MDO

You can see Coon creek on the far south end where the black road ends in a
square dot.

There is a small chance we will walk the bluff trail instead of Coon Creek is
rain makes the trail bad, or anyone is really terrified of Poison Oak, or if we
all just want to look at the ocean if it is a sunny day. Bring a small snack,
plenty of water, and good hiking shoes - boots are best...
Hope you can make it.
