Sinus washes question   Message List

I am trying to understand the whole sinus wash concept. I get how they can rinse
out the
inside of the nose, the neti pot or the Neil Med Sinus bottles for example
clearly rinse out the
inside of the nose, I can feel the solution go up one side of the nose and come
out the other
side, but how is this solution rinsing out the SINUSES? I mean the opening to
the sinuses is
the size of a pinhead, very small, so how much of this really could be getting
into the sinuses
and doing anything? In addition, I always felt that if any of the solution did
get into the
sinuses, it could just sit in there brewing and creating a breeding ground for
bacteria to
grow?
I mean if any of the solution actually gets into the sinuses, which I question,
might it not just
pool in the sinuses and be a breeding ground for bacteria to grow in? Sort of
like stagnant
water?

If you can help me understand this, even my ENT, when I asked her did say very
little of
these nasal washes do really get into the sinuses, so how are they really
helping?

I think part of the theory is that it washes out allergens and irritating substances from the mucous membranes so they have less junk to deal with. Also, if...
