Hello,
I can relate to some of what you described. On 4/23 I had a septoplasty plus my maxillary sinus was cleaned out of a bad Strep infection. I was put on Cleocin / Clindamycin (which is notorious for causing Clostridium difficile and after 5 days I had to stop the Cleocin because of horrible diarrhea. Although the lab tests for C. difficile were negative, my Internist said that he has seen "false negatives" and immediately put me on Flagyl 500 mg for one week. On day two after starting the Flagyl I finally had my first normal bm in 2 weeks!
And tomorrow (Fri) I am having one tooth plus the root of another tooth taken out. No further antibiotics here either....just a couple more days of Flagyl.
I hope he is feeling better and on the mend.

Well, after a month of l;ow-grade fevers, we finally got the answer a couple of weeks ago: after testing positive for occult blood he was found to have c. difficile--a bacterial infection in his ileal pouch, which either was caused or worsened by the pre- and post-surgical courses of Augmentin. Gotta love those antibiotics.Additionally, because the sinus surgery surgery did not seem to improve the headaches or the amount of drainage he was having, allergy tests recently were re-done. Surprise: although he tested negative for ANY allergies five years ago, this time he reacted to MANY things. Obviously things can change. So they are making the formulas, and he will begin immunotherapy in a couple of weeks. (Meantime, the sinuses have healed perfectly and look good.) At least many of his symptoms have been validated by one dx or the other, so I feel justified for not letting the doctors off the hook and just concluding it was all "nothing".Next up, in just over a week: wisdom teeth removal--where we will try to avoid antibiotics alltogether. The fun never stops.
