Re: Hookworms vs TSO

Hi Daniel,
One thing you should be aware of when considering hookworm as
treatment for your Crohn's is that the side effects that are
experienced by most patients who receive a single dose of 50 are a lot
like Crohn's itself. So your symptoms, if you use hookworm, will
likely get worse before they get better. You could use the multi dose
protocol we have just introduced, which would just about guarantee
zero intestinal side effects, but of course that would cost more. It
is three doses spread out as 10, 20 six weeks later, and 20 four weeks
after that. Patients also have the option of increasing their total
dose, and thereby increasing their chance of achieving complete
remission, because by spreading out the dose we can eliminate or
vastly reduce the side effects.

The fifty dose limit was selected as providing the best balance
between efficacy and side effects, in our opinion. We based that
choice mainly on the dosing study done at Nottingham. The multi stage
inoculation option was based upon a study done on a single research
subject who was inoculated twice six months apart (if memory serves
correctly). His second inoculation caused few if any side effects
although he had reacted with side effects to the first dose. Both
doses were the same size.

Side effects, besides the rash at the site of inoculation, can include
fatigue, nausea, epigastric pain (stomach ache), diarrhea, gas,
bloating, cramping and constipation.

They can last from 1 to eight weeks it seems, but it varies wildly by
patient. My wife for instance received a hundred in her first dose
(she and I are all we have got to experiment on and I did give myself
200) and got no intestinal side effects at all, while others who have
posted here have gotten 20 and had a rough time for almost two months.

Just wanted you to be aware of all the issues surrounding hookworm.

thanks for posting.
