Copper, Tossing out eyeglasses   Message List
Reply Message #122 of 211 |
It's been a while since I have posted anything to this list in "blog"
fashion. This is a new "blog" entry.

I had double pneumonia when I was 4 years old. Prior to that, I had a
perfect dental checkup. After that, I had 13 cavities. One tooth was
pulled and a spacer put in, at least one tooth was crowned and the rest were
filled. After that, I had a new cavity at almost every dental checkup until
they sealed my teeth when I was 16. As an adult, I have had multiple oral
surgeries and about a year after getting a gold bridge I nearly died (and
have recently concluded that I am probably allergic to gold). So I have had
a lot of metal in my mouth over the years and, for me, removing metals from
my system has been an important part of getting well. Put in that context,
I find the next tidbit sort of amusing, or at least ironic.

A few weeks back, my oldest son and I watched an episode of Modern Marvels
together about copper. At one point, they talked about its antimicrobial
properties. After doing a little talking and a little googling, we decided
to buy a copper-based paper towel holder from Target. We ordered it online
and it got here about a week or so ago. We did this in part because "paper
is evil" yet we use a lot of paper towels. We were hoping that an
antimicrobial paper towel holder would help improve the cleanliness of the
paper towels. And it has. We have been really pleased with the results.
It also occurred to me that the fact that copper is antimicrobial must be
why we prefer copper pot scrubbers to steel or brillo or sponges: They just
don't get as disgusting as the other options.

As for my eyeglasses, I tossed them out on Friday, February 6th. I have
been soaking them overnight about half the time in either diluted peroxide
or diluted tonic water. This caused the decorative coating to strip off
some months back and leave plain, bare metal. More recently, the coating on
the lenses had begun to pit. I hardly wore my glasses anymore for anything
other than going to my job. So last week I tried doing my job without my
glasses. I just took them off and sat them on my desk. In spite of my
nearsightedness and astigmatism, it was do-able. The first day, my glasses
were mostly hung on the front of my shirt. The second day, they were mostly
left on my desk. I felt better while at work. So Friday I went to work
without them as a test run. I was generally more energetic and felt
better. I managed to get my work done and concluded it was do-able to live
without my glasses and also concluded that my glasses are at least part of
what has been making me sick at work. I don't know the exact mechanism.
Perhaps there were germs living in the hinges or something, in spite of
frequently soaking them to kill stuff.

After I got home from work Friday night, I let my kids know we could toss
the glasses out. They went out the night. About 48 hours or so later, I
threw up. The 48 hour lag time is a common pattern we have noticed when we
make a major change. And vomitting in reaction a major purging event is
also something that has become fairly common for me. It's happened maybe 2
dozen times in the last couple of years, which would average out to around
once a month. This is not like any other type of vomitting I have ever
known. It follows a distinct pattern where it is preceded by a specific
type of severe sinus pain and it is followed by sleeping like the dead.
Afterwards, my baseline is permanently better. It looks to me like tossing
out the eyeglasses is a major turning point. I haven't felt this well in
about 20 years.

The future suddenly looks a whole lot brighter to me.
