present. Life is a mystery....it just sometimes turn
unexpectedly...but always for a reason.

There are medical alternatives available and I am sure your
friend's medical team are doing their therapeutic modality for this
kind of illness.

I have heard that Pamidronate therapy is in use for
multiple myeloma. My patients at Shriners Hospital are also being
started on this. It has been recently approved by FDA for clinical
trials for our patient population beset with a congenital condition,
Osteogenesis Imperfecta or "brittle bones." Pamidronate seem to
strengthen their bones, decrease their bone pains significantly.

But the main therapeutic options currently available to
induce remission in newly diagnosed cases of multiple myeloma
include :

1) Melphalan at conventional doses without concurrent
administration of interferon

2) Melphalan at conventional dose combined with interferon

3) Autologous bone marrow transplantation (ABMT)

4) Palliative doses of radiotherapy to relieve pain

5) Maintenance of ambulation (walking....walking!) is vital !

6) Adequate hydration....lots of fluids....is essential.

7) Medications as ordered such as prednisone, antibiotics if
needed, allopurinol


Multiple Myeloma is a progressive neoplastic disease characterized by
marrow plasma cell tumors and over production of an intact monoclonal
immunoglobulin (IgG, IgA, IgD, or IgE ) or Bence-Jones protein and
often associated with multiple osteolytic lesions, hypercalcemia,
anemia, renal damage and increased susceptibility to bacterial
infections. The pelvis, spine, ribs and skull are most frequently
involved.

Persistent unexplained skeletal pain (especially in the back or
thorax) renal (kidney) failure, or recurrent bacterial infections,
especially pneumococcal pneumonias, are the most common
presentations. Anemia with fatigue and weakness predominates .
Pathologic fractures and vertebral collapse are common and may lead
to spinal cord compression and paraplegia.
