Subject: Many Types of Balsamic Vinegar Contain High Levels of Lead

http://www.naturalnews.com/027683_balsamic_vinegar_lead.html

Findings from a November 9, 2009, Environmental Health News report have revealed that many varieties of balsamic vinegar contain trace amounts of lead that are contributing to neurological and other damage in both children and adults. Ingestion of a single tablespoon of vinegar with the highest tested levels of lead was found to potentially raise a child's blood lead level by 30% while two tablespoons a day would raise it by 55%.

Traditional balsamic vinegars have always been procured using time-tested methods of barrel fermentation that instill the rich balsamic flavor loved by many. However
research is beginning to show that many of these vinegars, particularly those that are aged for the longest periods of time, contain dangerously high levels of lead that could be contributing to childhood behavior disabilities like Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

In 1991, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (
CDC) set the maximum threshold of lead exposure in children to 10 micrograms (mcg) per deciliter, a level that more recent research suggests is too high. The CDC itself recognizes that the toxicity of lead is so severe that there is no specific minimum threshold for which adverse effects do not occur.

In 2002, a California lawsuit concerning lead-tainted
vinegar led to state mandates that established the maximum allowable daily level of lead at .5 mcgs per day, which translates to 34 parts per billion (ppb). Shelves in the state stocked with untested or threshold-exceeding balsamic vinegar must contain a warning sign indicating that the products contain lead and may be harmful to health.

Since not all balsamic vinegars contain lead, and some more than others, producers are expressing concern that balsamic vinegar is receiving a bad rap despite the fact that many other grape products also contain lead. They also allege that independent experts have verified that grapevines tend to absorb lead from the ground and that the occurrences are completely normal and to be expected.

Some toxicologists and others, however, oppose the idea that
lead contamination is occurring due to soil conditions and rather suggest that production and storage methods are the culprits. Testing has revealed that vinegars aged the longest in wood barrels had the highest levels of lead contamination.

Many producers are now independently testing and verifying their vinegar products in order to meet guidelines and to assure customers that their products are safe. Many brands meet or exceed the California threshold requirements and some even print a stamp of approval on their labels.

Since trace amounts of lead can be found in all kinds of
foods, it seems unfair to simply target balsamic vinegar. However it is best to practice caution and seek out those products that have verifiably minimal levels of toxic carcinogens like lead.

There are also a variety of heavy metal detoxification regimens that can be utilized in order to keep the body in tip-top shape, including supplementation with chlorella, spirulina, sulfur-rich foods like cabbage and garlic, and fresh juicing. While it is best to keep heavy metal ingestion at a minimum, nutrient-rich diets play an important role in continually purifying the
blood and detoxifying the body.

http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2009/12/08/Top-12-Foods-for-Healthy-Immune-Response.aspx

The 2009 flu season is upon us.

Staying well while those around you sniffle and sneeze requires that you extract as much nutrition from your diet as you can, loading up on the foods that pack the biggest nutritional punch.

Avoiding processed foods, grains and sugar will go a long way toward strengthening your immune system. However, you can do even more by selecting foods that are loaded with specific immune boosting nutrients.

Eating a diet rich in the following foods will be far better for your health than loading up on handfuls of supplements, or worse yet, falling victim to vaccines that expose you to health risks far worse than influenza.

Below, I have outlined what I consider to be the absolute best foods you can eat to help protect yourself this season, although the list is certainly not exhaustive.
1. Unpasteurized Grass-Fed Organic Milk
Raw organic milk from grass-fed cows contains beneficial bacteria that prime your immune system and can reduce allergies. It is an outstanding source of vitamins, especially vitamin A, zinc, and enzymes. Raw organic milk is not associated with any of the health problems of pasteurized milk such as rheumatoid arthritis, skin rashes, diarrhea and cramps.

Although raw milk availability is limited in the US depending on where you live, you can locate the source closest to you at RealMilk.com.

Whey Protein

Even if you don’t have access to raw milk, you can use a high-quality whey protein that comes from grass-fed cows to receive much of the same health benefits.

The protein in milk is whey protein. Whey is the liquid that separates from the curd during the production of cheese. When the liquid dries into powdered whey, the nutrients become concentrated, and it can be packaged and used in that form.

Whey protein can help you fight off colds and flu because it contains beta-glucans and immunoglobulins, which protect your immune system and support your body’s natural detoxification processes.
2. Fermented Foods
If you are serious about boosting your immunity, then adding traditionally fermented foods is essential.

One of the most healthful fermented foods is kefir. Kefir is an ancient cultured, enzyme-rich food full of friendly microorganisms that balance your “inner ecosystem” and strengthen immunity. Besides kefir, other good fermented foods include natto, kimchee, miso, tempeh, pickles, sauerkraut, yogurt (watch for sugar), and olives.
Friendly bacteria have a powerful, beneficial effect on your gut’s immune system, your first line of defense against pathogens, and aid in the production of antibodies.
3. Raw Organic Eggs from Free-Range Chickens
Before you wrinkle up your nose, raw eggs are an inexpensive and amazing source of high-quality nutrients that many people are deficient in, especially high-quality protein and fat. I am a proponent of raw eggs because they have been so helpful to my own health.

As long as you have a good source for fresh, organic raw eggs, you need not worry about salmonella.. To find free-range pasture farms, try your local health food store, or go to http://www.eatwild.com or http://www.localharvest.org.

4. Grass-Fed Beef or Organ Meats
This recommendation is only valid if you are a protein or mixed nutritional type as carb types really should not be eating beef. Grass-fed beef comes from cows that eat what they were meant to eat—grasses, not corn or grains. This results in far greater health benefits for you and for the environment[i] .
Grass-fed beef is very high in vitamins A and E, omega-3 fatty acids, beta carotene, zinc and CLA. CLA (conjugated linoleic acid, a fatty acid) is three to five times higher in grass-fed animals than grain-fed animals and is an immune system enhancer.

Don’t confuse “organic” with grass-fed, since many organically raised cows are still fed organic corn, which you don’t want. However, most grass-fed cows are raised organically. And if you can find organic AND grass-fed, that’s ideal.
5. Coconuts and Coconut Oil
Besides being excellent for your thyroid and your metabolism, coconut oil is rich in lauric acid, which converts in your body to monolaurin. Monolaurin is the actual compound found in breast milk that strengthens a baby’s immunity.

A great deal of research has been done establishing the ability of lauric acid to enhance immunity. This medium-chain fatty acid (MCFA) actually disrupts the lipid membranes of offending organisms.

When selecting coconuts and coconut oil, make sure you choose organic ones that are unrefined, unbleached, made without heat processing or chemicals, and are non-GMO.
6. Locally Grown Organic Vegetables Appropriate for Your Nutritional Type
When it comes to fighting off pathogens, you simply can’t do any better than eating a variety of fresh, organic and preferably raw vegetables for the vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and enzymes they contain. However, the amount and type of vegetables you should eat daily will depend on your nutritional type.

Make sure the veggies you choose are fresh. The nutrient value drops to practically zero once a fruit or vegetable is canned. For example, take a look at the ORAC value of peaches.

ORAC Values

ORAC stands for Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity, and an ORAC unit or ORAC “score” is a standardized method of measuring the antioxidant capacity of different foods and supplements. The higher the ORAC score, the more effective a food is at neutralizing free radicals. The less free radicals you have, the healthier you will be.
Back to peaches.

A raw, fresh peach has an ORAC score of 1,814. A can of peaches in heavy syrup has an ORAC score of 436, meaning that more than 75 percent of the antioxidants are lost in the canning process.

You can check the ORAC score for many different things at www.oracvalues.com. The higher the score, the better. Please be aware, though, that the total antioxidant capacity of a food alone does not determine its health benefit, which depends on how it is absorbed and utilized by your body. ORAC score is a useful guide, but it is only part of the picture.
7. Blueberries and Raspberries
Blueberries and raspberries rate very high in antioxidant capacity (ORAC of 6,520), compared to other fruits and vegetables. Wild blueberries in particular are potent immune boosters. They contain powerful phytochemicals, such as anthocyanin, which is the pigment that gives blueberries their color. And they are lower in sugar than many other fruits.
8. Mushrooms
Mushrooms strengthen your immune system because they are rich in protein, fiber, vitamin C, B vitamins, calcium and other minerals, and even vitamin D -- one of the only foods that can provide you with this essential immune strengthener.

Mushrooms make up a large part of the fabric of the earth. According to Paul Stamets, one of the world’s leading authorities on the health benefits of mushrooms, one cubic inch of soil can contain eight miles of mycelium.[ii]

Mushrooms also contain powerful compounds called beta glucans, which have been long known for their immune enhancing properties. The beta glucans in medicinal mushrooms (especially Reishi, Shiitake and Maitake) are notable for their ability to activate/modulate your immune system.
Beta glucan[iii] enhances immunity through a variety of mechanisms, many of which are similar to those of echinacea or astragalus root. For example, it binds to macrophages and other scavenger white blood cells, activating their anti-infection activities.[iv] Numerous studies support this.
9. Chlorella
As foods go, chlorella is nearly perfect.
Chlorella is a single-cell freshwater algae that acts as an efficient detoxification agent by binding to toxins, such as mercury, and carries them out of your system. It is the chlorophyll in chlorella that makes it so powerful. Chlorophyll helps you process more oxygen, cleanses your blood and promotes the growth and repair of your tissues.
For a full review of all the benefits of this superfood, go to my chlorella page.
10. Propolis
Propolis is a bee resin and one of the most broad-spectrum antimicrobial compounds in the world, if not the broadest spectrum, according to master herbalist Donnie Yance. Propolis is also the richest source of caffeic acid and apigenin, two very important phenolic compounds that aid in immune response.
11. Teas
The two best types of tea for fending off microinvaders are Matcha green tea and tulsi tea.

Green Tea and Matcha

Matcha is the most nutrient-rich green tea and comes in the form of a stone-ground powder, completely unfermented. The best Matcha comes from Japan and has up to seventeen times the antioxidants of wild blueberries, and seven times more than dark chocolate.

Green teas are rich in polyphenols, in the form of natural chemicals called catechins. The most powerful catechin in tea is epigallocatechin (EGCG), which was found in one study to be 25 to 100 times more potent than antioxidant vitamins C and E. And Matcha is more than 100 times as potent in EGCG as regular brewed green tea.

Tulsi

Tulsi tea, coming from the holy basil herb, has been used for thousands of years in the Ayurvedic medicine of India. Not only is this tea loaded with antioxidants, but it has multiple positive health benefits, including supporting your immune health, memory, heart health and vision.
12. Herbs and Spices
Herbs and spices are at the top of the list of high ORAC value foods on planet Earth[v] . There are simply too many good ones to summarize here! So I will simply highlight a few that deserve special mention.

Garlic

Garlic, although not at the top of the ORAC chart (5,346), is incredibly beneficial to your immune system because it offers a triple-whammy: it’s antibacterial, antiviral and anti-fungal. You should be eating garlic every day. One of the best things about garlic is that bacteria, viruses, and yeast build up no resistance to it, unlike with synthetic antibiotics.

For optimal benefits, garlic should be fresh since the active ingredient is destroyed within one hour of smashing the garlic cloves. In other words, garlic capsules are basically useless.

Garlic contains allicin, a chemical that is anticarcinogenic. It also has been shown to lower LDL, lower total cholesterol, lower blood pressure, reduce your risk of blood clots and stroke, lower homocysteine, and even prevent insect bites -- including mosquitoes and ticks.

Herbs and Spice and Everything Nice

Immunity from common infections involves not only preventing pathogens from taking hold, but also moderating your immune response to invading pathogens.

Complications arise when you experience an over-response to the infection, which is why H1N1 is taking its toll on healthy young adults. Their bodies are over responding -- something called a “cytokine storm.” It’s basically a severe inflammatory response.[vi]
One wonderful thing about plants (and herbs especially) is that they don’t all stimulate your immune system—some modulate it, or act as a buffer.

Here are some of the best herbs and spices for building a strong immune system that functions correctly:

  • Honeysuckle and chrysanthemum: good antivirals

  • Artemisia: antimalarial

  • Andrographis, aka “King of Bitters”: antiviral, and helps modulate inflammatory response[vii]

  • Licorice: buffers the inflammatory response by increasing steroid output by the adrenal glands; a good buffer if your immune system is over responding to the flu.

  • Turmeric: ORAC score of 159,277; general immune system booster due to its high antioxidant capacity, and an anticancer agent as well; turmeric is 5 to 8 times stronger than vitamins C and E, and even strong enough to scavenge the hydroxyl radical, which is considered by some to be the most reactive of all oxidants

  • Black Pepper: Increases the bioavailability of just about all other foods--herbs and other things

  • Oregano: ORAC 13,970; active agent is rosmarinic acid, a strong antioxidant; one tablespoon of oregano has the antioxidant capacity of one medium apple

  • Cinnamon: ORAC 267,536; powerful antimicrobial agent—found to kill E. coli and many other bacteria; also has anti-inflammatory compounds

  • Cloves: THE BIG ORAC GRAND PRIZE WINNER AT 314,446, highest of all foods tested! Contains eugenol; its mild anesthetic benefits are useful for toothaches and sore throats; good anti-inflammatory[viii]

Finally, I recently had a fascinating interview with herbalist Donnie Yance, who shared his basic remedy for flu, should you come down with one.

Make this special tea from a combination of herbs that synergistically cause your body to sweat -- which is very desirable if you want to eradicate a virus from your system. And then drink it hot and often:

  1. Elderflower (this has been used for hundreds of years for flu)
  2. Boneset (eupatorium)
  3. Yarrow
  4. Linden
  5. Peppermint
  6. Ginger

By incorporating some of these fantastic foods, you’ll not only evade the circulating viruses but improve your overall health and longevity at the same time.

Abstract: Twenty-eight strict vegetarians were given 500 mg ascorbic acid twice daily after lunch and dinner for two months. Hemoglobin and certain iron status parameters were measured before and after the treatment. Ascorbate treatment increased mean hemoglobin by 8%, serum iron by 17% and transferrin saturation by 23% and decreased total iron binding capacity by 7%. All these changes were statistically significant.. The rise in serum ferritin was 12%. The serum protein or copper level did not indicate their dietary deficiency, while initial serum ascorbate level were low which rose by 60% on therapy. It is concluded that ascorbate supplementation is a better method of improving hematologic and iron status than iron salt administration...

Autism is a neurodevelopmental disability characterized by social withdrawal, communication deficits, and repetitive behaviors. Both genetic and environmental factors have been implicated as causes of autism, moreover a high body burden of mercury and other toxic metals from vaccinations and environmental exposures has been increasingly given more attention.

Thimerosal is mercury containing vaccine preservative added to many childhood vaccines. It is widely suspected as a cause of an increasing widespread epidemic of childhood neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism.

Now, a new study shows that administration of thimerosal leads to long lasting neurological impairment in rats, specifically by altering the neural process of handling noxious stimuli.

Analysis also shows that significant amounts of mercury from thimerosal accumulates in the rat brain and remains long term. The mercury is not readily cleared, as was previously believed. Though mercury readily leaves the blood stream, it does not leave the body. It is now recognized to accumulate in brain tissue.

Additionally, this research is supported by various prior studies which show that children with autism suffer from a weak ability to excrete mercury and that the weaker the ability, the more severe the symptoms of autism.

Now, two new research studies investigating the effects of chelation therapy on the health and behavior of children with autism spectrum disorders have discovered that children receiving chelation to reduce mercury levels had significant improvements.

It appears that mercury may produce they symptom set recognized in the autism spectrum disorders as a form of autism.

Subject: New understanding about mechanism for cell death after stroke leads to possible therapy
gabrieladeve...

UBC-Brain Research Centre discovery

Scientists at the Brain Research Centre, a partnership of the University of British Columbia Faculty of Medicine and Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute, have uncovered new information about the mechanism by which brain cells die following a stroke, as well as a possible way to mitigate that damage. The results of the study were recently published online in Nature Medicine.
Following a stroke, many brain cells continue to die even after blood flow has been restored. Researchers have long known this is due to a complicated cascade of cellular messages that lead to the "self-destruction" and death of brain cells.
The team of Brain Research Centre scientists discovered that, in animal models, the over-activation of NMDA receptors—special receptors on the surface of brain cells—activates another protein, called SREBP-1, which subsequently causes cell death. SREBP-1 is found naturally in cells throughout the body and is involved with cholesterol and other fat production.
NMDA receptors control the movement of calcium in and out of brain cells, which is necessary for normal brain function. However, following a stroke, levels of glutamate—the most abundant chemical messenger in the brain—rise rapidly in cells, leading to over-activation of NMDA receptors, an excess of calcium entering cells, and the onset of cell death.
The researchers found that under normal conditions, SREBP-1 is largely kept in an inactive form by a protein known as Insig-1. After a stroke, over-activation of NMDA receptors leads to a rapid degradation of Insig-1, which increases the level of active form of SREBP-1.
"How over-activation of NMDA receptors caused cell death after a stroke has been a mystery," says Dr. Yu Tian Wang, co-lead on the study, a Professor in the UBC Division of Neurology, and the Heart and Stroke Foundation of BC & Yukon Chair in Stroke Research. "We found that SREBP-1 was one of the missing key players in that process."
While the detailed mechanisms by which activation of SREBP-1 leads to brain cell death remain to be established, the researchers discovered a way to inhibit SREBP-1 and thereby significantly reduce cell death.
"We developed a drug that can stabilize Insig-1, which in turn inhibits the activity of SREBP-1," says Dr. Max Cynader, co-lead on the study, a Canada Research Chair in Brain Development, and the Director of the Brain Research Centre. "By doing so, we were able to prevent cell death."
The researchers also found that the drug works post-stroke in animal models. "When we administered it post-stroke, there was less brain cell damage 30 days later than compared to controls," says Dr. Wang. "This is important because previous studies focused on blocking the NMDA receptors in order to prevent cell death, but this approach didn't work because it affected normal cell function and had a relatively short therapeutic window. The drug we studied works downstream of NMDA receptors and appears to have less detrimental side effects with a much improved therapeutic window."
Further investigations will help researchers understand how SREBP-1 causes cell death and to further determine efficacy of the drug. As well, because of the protein's connection to cholesterol synthesis and other cellular functions, further investigations may reveal if it has a role in other neurological disorders, such as ALS, and whether the drug might be effective for those conditions as well.

Study Being Conducted at UCSF Children’s Hospital

StemCells, Inc. (NASDAQ: STEM) announced today that it has commenced patient recruitment for a Phase I clinical trial designed to test the safety and preliminary efficacy of its HuCNS-SC® purified human neural stem cells in Pelizaeus-Merzbacher Disease ( PMD), a neurological disorder that primarily afflicts children. The study is being conducted at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Children’s Hospital, one of the leading medical centers in the United States for neonatology, pediatric neurology and neurosurgery.
PMD results from a defective gene and is characterized by a lack of myelin, a substance that surrounds and insulates nerve cells’ communications fibers. These fibers function much like electrical wires, and without sufficient myelination are unable to properly transmit nerve impulses, leading to the loss of neurological function and eventually death in the most severe forms of PMD. Currently, there are no effective treatment options for patients with PMD.

“Initiation of this first ever human study of neural stem cells in a myelination disorder is a significant milestone, both for our Company and for the stem cell field,” stated Stephen Huhn MD, FACS, FAAP, Vice President and Head of the CNS Program at StemCells, Inc. “We are investigating a cell therapy approach to assess the ability of HuCNS-SC cells to produce the myelin needed for nerve cells to communicate with one another and maintain healthy functioning of the central nervous system. It is our hope that this approach will one day lead to a viable treatment option for these afflicted children, and possibly also for patients suffering from other myelination disorders, such as multiple sclerosis, transverse myelitis and certain types of cerebral palsy.”

The trial is being directed by a team of prominent academic researchers at UCSF. The principal investigator is David H. Rowitch, M..D., Ph.D., Chief of Neonatology at UCSF Children’s Hospital, Professor of Pediatrics and Neurological Surgery, member of the Eli and Edythe Broad Center of Regeneration Medicine and Stem Cell Research, and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator. The study co-investigators are Nalin Gupta, M.D., Ph.D., Chief of Pediatric Neurological Surgery, and Jonathan B.. Strober, M.D., Director of Clinical Services for Child Neurology and Director of the Muscular Dystrophy Clinic at UCSF Children's Hospital.

“We feel very fortunate to be carrying out this landmark study at a world-class medical center in collaboration with a team of highly regarded specialists, all interested in advancing stem cell therapy for neurological disorders,” added Huhn. “The health and well-being of the children participating in this trial is always the primary focus, so we are pleased that such respected clinicians will be providing their significant expertise to these patients.”

About the PMD Clinical Trial

The Phase I trial is designed to assess the safety and preliminary effectiveness of HuCNS-SC cells as a treatment for PMD. The trial is expected to enroll four patients with connatal PMD, which is the most severe form of the disease. All patients will be transplanted with HuCNS-SC cells, and will be immunosuppressed for nine months. Following transplantation, the patients will be evaluated regularly over a 12-month period in order to monitor and evaluate the safety and tolerability of the HuCNS-SC cells, the surgery, and the immunosuppression. In addition, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain post-transplant may enable the measurement of new myelin formation. As the Company intends to follow the effects of this therapy long-term, a separate four-year observational study will be initiated at the conclusion of this trial.

Interested parties may find more information on patient enrollment at http://neonatology.ucsf.edu/nbri/pmd-trial/ or by visiting www.stemcellsinc.com. Additional information about this clinical trial can also be found at www.clinicaltrials.gov.

Researchers from the Institute of Food Research (IFR), part of the Institute of the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Council, have materialized a protein that works with probiotic bacteria to help bind them to the gastrointestinal tract. This breakthrough research will help to further the viability of probiotics and to pinpoint the most beneficial strains for use in the body.

Dr. Nathalie Juge, a researcher from IFR, stated that in order for probiotics to be properly assimilated, they need to be effectively bound to the cells lining the intestinal walls. In order to help accomplish this, her
research team derived a protein from the probiotic strain Lactobacillus reuteri, a lactic acid bacterium found naturally in the gastrointestinal tract. The proteins bind themselves to the mucus membrane and assist it by serving as additional catch points for bacterium to reside.

The mucous membranes found naturally in the body's largest
immune system organ, the gut, help protect its lining and renew its cells by serving as a native fixation point for bacteria. Prior to the study, it was generally unknown what element was utilized by the mucous to make bacteria stick to it. Research published by IFR and the University of East Anglia in a Journal of Biological Chemistry paper revealed that specialized binding proteins are responsible for this important work.

Vital components of maintaining a healthy immune system, these proteins serve as catalysts for the metabolization of
probiotic bacteria. They serve as human immunoglobulin protein receptors as well, indicating their crucial role in maintaining overall immune health.

'Double trouble' antibiotic hope

Antibiotic
Antibiotic resistance is an increasing problem

A "double-headed" antibiotic could lead to powerful new drugs to beat resistance, say UK researchers.

It sticks to bacteria in two places making it more potent and reducing the chance that bacteria will adapt to resist it, the journal Science reports.
Although not itself suitable for use in patients, it is hoped drugs can be created based on the same principle.
But the news comes as experts warn that excessive regulation is preventing new antibiotics being developed.
An editorial in The Lancet medical journal has called for greater efforts to develop new antibiotics.
A recent EU report found that only 15 antibacterial drugs that offer a potential benefit over existing drugs are in development, and only five have reached the final stage of the trials process.
And the British Society for Antimicrobial Chemotherapy has set up a working group to try and address some of the barriers.
Natural compound
In the latest study, researchers looked at a naturally occurring molecule made by soil bacteria called simocyclinone.
It attacks an enzyme in bacteria called DNA gyrase, stopping them from growing.
This enzyme is also targeted by a commonly used group of antibiotics called fluoroquinolones, but resistance to these drugs is growing.
The team showed that simocyclinone binds to a completely different, previously unexploited part of the enzyme and also latches on in two places or "pockets".
The "double-headed" nature of the antibiotic makes it 100 times more powerful than if each "head" attached to the bacteria individually.
You could say that this is a case of two heads being better than one
Professor Tony Maxwell, study leader
And because bacteria would have to mutate in both binding sites, it cuts the potential for resistance.
Simocyclinone is a fairly large molecule and can not easily get into bacterial cells.
By designing molecules which bind to the enzyme in the same way, researchers say more effective antibiotics could be developed.
Drug design
Study leader Professor Tony Maxwell from the John Innes Centre in Norwich, said: "If you can knock out this enzyme, you have a potential new drug," said Professor Maxwell.
"The fact that there are two pockets means that it might require simultaneous mutations in both pockets for the bacteria to acquire full resistance to the drug, which is much less likely.
"You could say that this is a case of two heads being better than one."
Professor Laura Piddock from the British Society for Antimicrobial Chemotherapy, said there are huge hurdles to developing antibiotics.
"Antibiotic drug development worldwide is in the doldrums because it's very expensive to get drugs through the regulatory process.
"These results are exciting because having a single molecule that targets two separate parts of the enzyme is new and novel.
"But clearly if someone comes up with a useable version of this molecule they're going to have to overcome some hurdles, which are so profound it makes you very pessimistic."

Vitamin C As An Antiviral:
It's All About Dose

(OMNS, December 3, 2009) One of the most frequent questions from Orthomolecular Medicine News Service readers is, Just how much vitamin C should I take?
Our bodies cannot make vitamin C (ascorbate), although most animals can. We must get it from our food and from supplements. But how much do we really need? Persistent arguments on this question may be settled by looking at how much vitamin C animals manufacture in their bodies. The answer is: quite a lot. Most animals make the human body-weight equivalent of 5,000 to 10,000 milligrams a day. It is unlikely that animals would have evolved to make this much vitamin C if they did not need it and use it. Indeed, cells in many human body tissues concentrate vitamin C by 25-fold or more over blood concentration.

Each person's need for vitamin C differs because of differences in genetics and individual biochemistry [1,2,3]. Further, our bodies undergo different stresses, and we certainly eat different foods. Therefore, the daily need for ascorbate to maintain health for an adult varies between 2,000 - 20,000 mg/day. Linus Pauling personally took 18,000 mg of vitamin C daily. Although he was often ridiculed for this, it is interesting to note that Dr. Pauling had two more Nobel prizes than any of his critics. He died at age 93. Abram Hoffer, MD, a colleague of Pauling's, took megadoses of vitamin C and successfully gave it to thousands of patients over 55 years of medical practice. Dr. Hoffer died at age 91.

Antiviral Function

When we are challenged with a viral infection, our need for vitamin C can rise dramatically, depending on the body's immune function, level of injury, infection, or environmental toxicity such as cigarette smoke [4,5]. Ascorbate at sufficiently high doses can prevent viral disease and greatly speed recovery from an acute viral infection. Surprising to some, this was originally observed by physicians in the 1940s and has been verified and re-verified over the last 60 years by doctors who achieved quick and complete recovery in their patients with ascorbate mega-doses [5]. The effective therapeutic dose is based on clinical observation and bowel tolerance. Clinical observation is essentially "taking enough C to be symptom free, whatever that amount may be." Bowel tolerance means exactly what you think it means: the amount that can be absorbed from the gut without causing loose stools. [5,6]. Very high doses, 30,000 - 200,000 mg, divided up throughout the day, are remarkably non-toxic and have been documented by physicians as curing viral diseases as various as the common cold, flu, hepatitis, viral pneumonia, and even polio. [4,5,7]. On first reading this may sound incredible. We invite interested persons to read further, starting with the references listed below, and especially Dr. Frederick R. Klenner's Clinical Guide to the Use of Vitamin C.

Many scientists believe stem cells hold great promise for new treatments

US regulators have approved 13 new lines of human embryonic stem cells for use in scientific research.

They are the first batches of embryonic stem cells - the building blocks of the body - that have been made available to US researchers in almost a decade.
The move comes after President Barack Obama eased restrictions on federally funded embryonic stem cell research.

Another 96 lines could soon be approved if they meet the ethical guidelines unveiled in July, US scientists said.

Scientists hope to harness the cells to treat a variety of diseases, including injuries, cancer and diabetes.

Ethical tests

"I am happy to say that we now have human embryonic stem cell lines eligible for use by our research community under our new stem cell policy," said Francis Collins, director of the US National Institutes of Health.
Embryonic stem cells come from days-old embryos and can morph into any type of cell in the body.

Each embryo yields one stem cell line - a family of cells which can be replicated indefinitely in a laboratory.
But their use in scientific research is controversial. Opponents say culling the cells is unethical, as it destroys the human embryo.

Under former President George W Bush, federal funding was limited to about 60 stem cell lines created from embryos destroyed prior to August 2001.

Scientists say the new lines were created in ways that made them far better candidates for successful research.

The US government unveiled ethical guidelines for the research in July, requiring full parental consent and limiting scientists to using existing embryos that would otherwise be destroyed.

In keeping with the guidelines, the 13 newly-approved lines were created using private money from leftover embryos at fertility clinics.

Home-made kefirs are growing in popularity as probiotic food sources while spreading as a community sharing activity. There are two types of Kefirs: Milk kefir and water kefir. The latter is not well known. Both can be home made from fermenting friendly bacterial sources, called starter grains, to provide potent but very inexpensive probiotics.

A rich supply of probiotics is essential for good digestion, and good digestion is essential for good overall health. If you've shopped for
probiotic supplements, you are probably aware of their price tags and how it affects your monthly budget. But if you tune into any of the kefir communities, you will be able to provide yourself with a continual supply of supplemental probiotics at virtually no cost.

Water and Milk Kefir Basics

Water kefir is less expensive with possibly more benefits than milk kefir. It's the perfect option for the lactose sensitive, vegan, or anyone who just don't trust milk products. But the starter grains, sometimes called Tibetan Mushrooms or Kefir Fungi, are a little more difficult to obtain than milk starter grains.

However, once you obtain either milk or
water starter grains, you can keep culturing those grains for almost forever. Milk kefir grains look like miniature popcorns or mini cauliflowers. The tiny water kefir grains are relatively colorless. They both contain combinations of friendly bacteria and yeasts that flourish during short fermentation periods.

Milk kefir grains can be ordered from a few online commercial sources, while water kefir starter grains usually have to be obtained from other water kefir users. Water kefir grains multiply rapidly, enabling users to want to give many away, while milk kefir grains do not multiply as much even though they can be used over and over.

Kefir Benefits

With either kefir, there are many
health benefits reported. The friendly yeasts in the cultures dominate the unfriendly yeasts. Many users report that with continual use over time, several chronic health maladies vanished. And most report a rejuvenation of energy and and overall well being.

Milk kefir is a much better source of probiotics than yogurt, not only in quantity, but diversity. And there is a belief that water kefir is even superior to milk kefir.

From Dolores Sanchez-Penalver's "Water Kefir" free pdf document comes this list of friendly
bacteria and yeasts: Lactobacillus brevis, Lactobacillus casei rhamnosus , Lactobacillus alactosus, Lactobacillus casei casei, Lactobacillus pseudoplantarum, Lactobacillus plantarum, Streptococcus lactis, Streptococcus cremeris, Leuconostoc mesenteroides,Saccharomyces florentinus, Saccharomyces pretoriensis, Kloeckera apiculata, Candida lambica, Candida valida.

Got Grains? Make Your Kefir

Both milk and water kefir instructions are virtually the same except for two areas. Although the milk kefir grains can be used over and over, they do not multiply nearly as much and as rapidly as the water kefir grains. So the water kefir grains beg to be given to others to start their kefir production!

The milk in milk kefir is the basis of fermentation for the kefir grains, while the water kefir requires brown cane
sugar or honey to kick it into fermentation. So what is offered here are the water kefir basic instructions. Simply eliminate the brown sugar for milk kefir. For more details, check out the source links below.

You will need a large mouth glass or ceramic jar, no plastic, of at least a little more than a liter or quart. Bigger is better as the gases from the fermentation process will have more room, eliminating the possibility of your jar exploding!

You should use spring or mineral water, at least water that is free of
chlorine. No metal utensils should touch the grains. Here, plastic is appropriate. A plastic mesh strainer, if available, is ideal also. Remove around three heaping tablespoons of starter grains and place them into the jar with around a liter or quart of good water.

Then add four tablespoons of the brown sugar. Mix gently with anything but a metal mixer or spoon. Cover with either a lid or cloth attached by a rubber band. Place the jar in a dark place that's at room temperature. The minimum fermentation time is 24 hours, maximum is 72 hours. The longer the stronger.

Most instructions prefer you wait until ready after 24, 48, or 72 hours then pour out the complete solution into another container, which can be refrigerated. Or simply pour out a glass at a time until the 72 hours expires. During the 72 hour period, a gentle daily mixing is a good idea.

Either way, after the liquid is drained, the kefir grains need to be removed and rinsed with water that is chlorine free. After rinsing, restart the process again with the original jar. You'll be amazed at how many extra kefir grains are available after the first run!

Anywhere from one to three glasses is recommended. With water kefir, it's easy to drink more than one glass per day.

There is a caveat. If you don't stay on top of the kefir ritual, you can lose the starter grains to spoilage. So this does require some discipline. But you can continue forever, and it's virtually free!

Knock Out The Cold & Flu With Sodium Bicarbonate

November 27, 2009

Though we know by now that sodium bicarbonate is a most useful medicine for the treatment of cancer and kidney disease and have always known its good for stomach acid imbalances and for cleaning our pools and refrigerators it is not likely we have thought about it to help resolve our common colds nor to alleviate they symptoms and dangers of influenza. Medicine does not have to be complicated and mysterious nor do we have to lay still and be run over by the Hun Hordes of Influenza viruses that the health authorities want us to be so frightened of.

Dr. Volney S. Cheney reported[1] long ago that, "A number of cases of colds of varying severity were carefully studied in the laboratory. Observation was made as to the degree of acidity of the urine; the CO2, combining power of the blood as an indicator of the alkaline reserve; tests were also made to determine the calcium content of the blood, the sugar content; non-protein nitrogen and the basal metabolism. The urine invariably carried a higher degree of acidity than the normal-in some cases as high as 800 (normal 350); the CO2 combining power of the blood in all cases was low, the highest being 52 per cent; the sugar content of the blood was generally decreased (below 100 mg. per 100 c.c.); the metabolic rate was always on the minus side. (These cases were carefully selected because of their lack of any symptoms of disturbed thyroid activity.) There is a change in the blood chemistry and, consequently, there must be a change in the tissues supplied by the blood. There is a decrease in the bicarbonates or reserve bases contained in the blood plasma and the tissues. These findings seem to point the way to the conclusion that a cold is a disturbance of the alkaline balance or reserve, in other words, a mild acidosis, or perhaps better stated, a lessening of the "buffer" action of the blood plasma through a decrease in its bicarbonate content."

Researchers' fears about misuse of their work come true...

Dr. Carlos Pardo was trying to head off trouble.

The Johns Hopkins neurologist and his colleagues had autopsied the brains of people with
autism who died in accidents and found evidence of neuroinflammation. This rare look inside the autistic brain had the potential to increase understanding of the mysterious disorder.

It also, he knew, could inspire doctors aiming to help children recover from autism to develop new experimental treatments -- even though the research was so preliminary the scientists did not know whether the
inflammation was good or bad, or even how it might relate to autism.

So when Pardo and his colleagues published their paper in the Annals of Neurology in 2005, they added an online primer that clearly explained their findings in layman's terms and sternly warned doctors not to use them to develop treatments.

"We were concerned that the study would raise a lot of controversy and be misused," Pardo said. "We were right."

Over and over, doctors in the autism recovery movement have used the paper to justify experimental treatments aimed at reducing neuroinflammation.

Citing Pardo's research, doctors have treated children with a blood product typically reserved for people with severe
immune system disorders like the one known as "bubble boy" disease. They have used it to justify sealing children with autism in pressurized bags and submarine-like metal chambers. Other children have been given a drug used to treat extremely rare genetic disorders.

The causes of most cases of autism are unknown. Scientists say they do not know what has gone wrong in the brains of children with autism. There are no cures. Most physicians recommend intensive behavioral therapy and, if asked, warn parents away from experimental treatments.

Even so, studies have found that up to three-quarters of families with children who have autism try at least some alternative therapies.

Physicians and others in the movement -- many affiliated with the organization Defeat Autism Now! -- say their treatment protocols rest on a foundation of solid science. But the Tribune found otherwise after speaking with dozens of scientists and physicians and reviewing thousands of pages of research and court testimony.

Pardo's study is just one example. In May, the Tribune reported on another questionable use of research. A geneticist and his son who promoted treating children who have autism with a testosterone inhibitor had based their protocol, in part, on the work of Simon Baron-Cohen, a psychopathologist at England's
University of Cambridge who has explored the role of the hormone in autism.

Yet Baron-Cohen told the Tribune that the idea of using the drug this way "fills me with horror."

Pardo said that since his paper came out he has received many questions about unproven autism treatments. He is particularly haunted by inquiries regarding powerful immunosuppressant drugs usually used on organ transplant patients, calling the idea "completely wrong."

Said the researcher: "People are abusing science for the treatment of autism."

'Unlikely to be beneficial'In 2007, a
Florida physician named Dr. Dan Rossignol wrote a pre-authorization letter for multiple cycles of intravenous immunoglobulin, a blood product approved to treat children with HIV or people with severe immune disorders.

But his patient was a child with autism. Rossignol, a family doctor not board-certified in immunology, is a star in the world of alternative autism treatments and trains physicians at Defeat Autism Now! seminars.

In his letter, obtained by the Tribune, Rossignol justified the unorthodox treatment in part by writing that "a recent study out of Johns Hopkins has shown that children with autism have evidence of neuroinflammation on autopsy and (cerebral spinal fluid) evaluations."

It was Pardo's study.

Rossignol did not mention that Pardo's team had written in its online primer, using capital letters for emphasis, that intravenous immunoglobulin "WOULD NOT HAVE a significant effect" on what they saw in the brains of people with autism.

"THERE IS NO indication for using anti-inflammatory medications in patients with autism," the team wrote.

Meddling with neuroinflammation could actually be a terrible mistake, said co-author Dr. Andrew Zimmerman, director of medical research at the Center for Autism and Related Disorders at the Kennedy Krieger Institute in Baltimore.

"It may actually be an attempt of the brain to repair itself," said Zimmerman, a pediatric neurologist. Suppressing the immune response "could be doing harm."

Intravenous immunoglobulin, or IVIG, consists of pooled antibodies separated from the plasma of multiple donors. Its serious side effects run from fevers and headaches to anaphylactic shock and
meningitis. Blood is screened, but there is still a remote risk of contracting some diseases, including "mad cow" disease.

IVIG treatment can run tens of thousands of dollars and involve many hours hooked up to an IV. Children are sometimes given a sedative. Because of the side effects, the cost and the lack of evidence for its usefulness, "it is irresponsible for somebody to use IVIG as a treatment except in a scientific study designed to determine whether it is effective," Zimmerman said.

Results from the few clinical trials that have evaluated IVIG as an autism treatment are disappointing. In 2006, the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology examined the evidence and concluded that the treatment was "unlikely to be beneficial" for autism, its lowest rating. A national panel of experts in Canada recommended against its use for autism in 2007.

Rossignol declined to be interviewed for this story. In a series of interviews and e-mails, his associate Dr. J. Jeff Bradstreet defended the use of IVIG for autism. Like Rossignol, Bradstreet is a prominent doctor in the alternative autism movement, training more than 100 doctors and lecturing to tens of thousands.

Bradstreet said he would try IVIG on every young child with autism if he could.

"Every kid with autism should have a trial of IVIG if money was not an option and IVIG was abundant," Bradstreet said. "It makes sense to try and would be ideal to give every young child a chance at it."

His practice offers a playroom "infusion suite" that includes a train set, a TV and toys. "IVIG is so easy for the kids once the IV is in," Bradstreet wrote in an e-mail.

The treatment is "extremely safe," Bradstreet said. "In 10 years we have had no significant side effects apart from short-term headaches or fevers in about 10 percent of the kids."

Bradstreet said in an interview that he had extensively discussed the Pardo paper with a co-author, Dr. Diana Vargas, at a meeting.

Vargas tells another story.

"I do not recall a conversation with Dr. Bradstreet about the topic," Vargas wrote in an e-mail. "I agree with Dr. Pardo and Dr. Zimmerman that our study did not suggest there being a use for IVIG in autism."

'Healing magic'Dr. James Neubrander, a Defeat Autism Now! physician in
New Jersey, makes tantalizing promises to parents of children with autism.

His sleek Web site features dozens of video testimonials from overjoyed parents detailing the amazing results of his treatments. One is titled "Miracles DO Happen!"

At least 13 videos -- the first is "From a robot to a real boy" -- are dedicated to hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Known for treating scuba divers with "the bends," the therapy involves sealing children in chambers under various degrees of increased pressure and oxygen.

Hyperbaric oxygen treatments are hugely expensive. Chambers can cost $20,000, and renting one can run thousands of dollars a month. A course of sessions through a physician or clinic can cost many thousands.

Neubrander said about 800 of his patients have undergone hyperbaric oxygen therapy. He estimates he has treated approximately 5,000 children with autism spectrum disorder in his career.

Advocates of the treatment speculate that hyperbaric oxygen therapy can reduce inflammation, among other effects. Neubrander ends written versions of his presentations about the treatment with a list of scientific journal articles.

His first citation? Pardo's paper.

Neubrander was involved in a published study, led by Rossignol, that found mild pressure and mild extra oxygen led to mild improvement of some symptoms of autism. Both doctors are listed as medical advisers to the International Hyperbarics Association on its Web site, which promotes the "healing magic of hyperbaric oxygenation." Neither doctor disclosed that in the study, which the IHA helped fund. Neubrander said any omission was "not a purposeful deception."

Commenting on Rossignol's research on the Web site where it was published, three prominent pediatric neurologists sharply criticized its design and analysis as having "flaws."

Rossignol, Neubrander and the other authors responded that they stand by their conclusion that hyperbaric treatment can be beneficial for some children with autism. In an interview, Neubrander said he thinks his newer protocols are even more beneficial.

Neubrander has not done studies to show his protocols work and are safe. He said he doesn't have time to wait for science to validate the results he and parents see. Also, grants are difficult to get and clinical trials may miss subtle improvements.

"Science is slow," he said. "I will use the safety of the science and, no, I will not throw the science out the window. But the science has to be balanced against the wisdom.. And science says, 'There is no wisdom from you, the mothers or fathers of the world, who depend on anecdote. Only science has wisdom.' "

But the history of medicine is rife with treatments that physicians and overjoyed patients hailed as miracles but that, when tested in clinical trials, proved to be unsafe, worthless or both. Seeing is not always believing in medicine, in terms of both safety and effectiveness.

Few treatments are completely benign, said Dr. Steven Goodman of the Johns Hopkins Berman Institute of Bioethics. "Even an ineffective therapy is rarely harmless," he said, "and sometimes that harm is worse than the disease."

And the combination of pressure and oxygen can be disastrous. In May a hyperbaric oxygen chamber at a Florida clinic exploded in flames while a young boy with cerebral palsy and his grandmother were inside. The grandmother died quickly. The child, burned over the majority of his body, died in June.

There are other safety concerns. More is not necessarily better when it comes to oxygen, said Richard Mailman, a neuropharmacologist at
Penn State University College of Medicine. Breathing pure oxygen under pressure can lead to a condition known as oxygen toxicity, putting the ears, central nervous system, eyes and lungs at risk.

"For someone compromised and not getting adequate oxygen, hyperbaric oxygen therapy can be lifesaving," Mailman said. "But for somebody who is ... well-oxygenated, you are increasing oxygen tension, and that may not be good."

Hyperbaric medicine researchers have developed safety protocols to avoid trouble. Neubrander said that if there were problems with the treatment, he would have heard about them.

But nobody has done long-term studies on whether it is safe for children with autism to spend dozens of hours under pressure breathing air containing higher oxygen levels. A child in one of Neubrander's testimonials reportedly logged 243 treatment sessions, which usually run an hour each, over four years. At least some of these sessions involved 100 percent oxygen.

Scientists learned the hard way that tinkering with something as seemingly innocuous as oxygen can have disastrous effects. During and after
World War II, doctors often administered high concentrations of oxygen to premature babies. Oxygen was assumed to be harmless and life-giving, so no clinical trials were held beforehand.

Thousands of those babies went blind, and it was years before doctors figured out too much oxygen was to blame.

"There is a long history of therapies we thought couldn't hurt, that could only help," said Goodman, the bioethicist. "And we found exactly the reverse."

Not endorsed by labPatricia Kane, who calls herself "the queen of fatty acid therapy," initially sounds like a skeptic of alternative autism treatments. She distances herself from the Defeat Autism Now! approach and says hyperbaric oxygen therapy, IVIG and chelation drugs all can be harmful.

"If you could see what happens to children when they're given some of these crazy interventions that ruin their life, and it's so painful," said Kane, whose office is in New Jersey. "Parents say, 'Patricia Kane will tell us the truth,' and I believe parents deserve the medical truth when it comes to their children."

One of her fans is Kent Heckenlively, a
California science teacher who writes for ageofautism.com, self-described as the "daily web newspaper of the autism epidemic." After spending "a couple of hundred thousands" on treatments, from chelation to stem cell therapy, for his daughter with autism, Heckenlively said Kane appealed to him in part because her protocol includes lab tests run by the prestigious Kennedy Krieger Institute.

"I can trust them, I think," Heckenlively said.

Kane, who points to neuroinflammation as a feature of autism, discusses Pardo's study in a chapter she co-wrote on autism treatments for the book "Food and Nutrients in Disease Management."

Kane says many children with autism have a buildup in their brains of a substance called very-long-chain fatty acids. Her "PK Protocol" -- named after her initials -- is aimed at burning them off with a prescription drug, phenylbutyrate, that is normally used to treat extremely rare genetic disorders in which ammonia builds up in the body.

Side effects of phenylbutyrate include vomiting, rectal
bleeding, peptic ulcer disease, irregular heartbeat and depression. No clinical trials have evaluated this drug as an autism therapy, and the idea that very-long-chain fatty acids have a role in autism is not proven by science.

Kane is not a medical doctor. When treating children with autism, she says, she works in concert with the child's physician, who supervises treatment.

She said she holds a doctorate in nutrition that was issued by Columbia Pacific University, an unaccredited institution that was shut down after a lengthy court battle with the state of California. An administrative law judge in 1997 found that the school awarded excessive credit for prior experiential learning, failed to employ qualified faculty and didn't meet requirements for issuing degrees.

Kane said Columbia Pacific granted her a doctorate after the school "consolidated my work," which Kane described as "clinical work" and continuing medical education courses for doctors. Her doctorate is valid, she said, because it was issued before the university ran into problems with the state.

Last year she was the subject of a television news investigation about her work with patients with ALS, also known as
Lou Gehrig's disease. The disease, which affects motor neurons, is a death sentence.

Janine Schiller, a
Pennsylvania mother, went to see Kane. "Dr. Kane flat out told her: 'You do not have ALS,' " said her husband, Tim. "She told her: 'You have a buildup of neurotoxins in your blood.' "

Kane's protocol involved taking pills, medications and herbal remedies, which Kane sold, Tim Schiller said. In all, the family spent $3,000. But nothing stopped the march of ALS, and Janine Schiller died eight months after her diagnosis.

"The money was trivial compared to the false hope she instilled in us," Tim Schiller said. "It's a terrible thing to be preying on people who are going to be dying."

In her work with children who have autism, Kane emphasizes that she doesn't rely on what she calls "Mickey Mouse" labs to test for red cell fatty acids in patients' blood. She uses the Peroxisomal Diseases Laboratory at Kennedy Krieger.

But a spokeswoman for the institute said its autism experts do not endorse the use of phenylbutyrate to treat children with autism.

"There has been no research conducted at the institute which validates the use of phenylbutyrate as an autism treatment," Elise Babbitt-Welker wrote in an e-mail. "Any suggestion otherwise is a misinterpretation of research data."

'Do no harm'Research into autism has yet to find solid answers, but there is reason for hope, said Zimmerman, a co-author on Pardo's paper.

"In the last five years, there has been a tremendous upsurge of activity," he said. "It gives us a lot of new prospects. I think we will solve this problem in the next 10 to 15 years."

And though autism advocates in the movement say they cannot wait that long for answers, a lack of options isn't a valid reason to try something, bioethicists say.

"You have a duty to make sure there is good reason to believe it might work and not hurt your child," said Douglas Diekema, a bioethicist at Treuman Katz Center for Pediatric Bioethics at Seattle Children's Research Institute.

It is difficult to be patient while science does its work, Zimmerman said. But, he added: "Above all, do no harm."

US scientists are testing a radical new theory that multiple sclerosis (MS) is caused by blockages in the veins that drain the brain.

The University of Buffalo team were intrigued by the work of Italian researcher Dr Paolo Zamboni who claims 90% of MS is caused by narrowed veins.
He says the restricted drainage, visible on scans, injures the brain leading to MS.

He has already widened the blockages in a handful of patients.

The US team want to replicate his earlier work before treating patients.

Experts welcomed the research saying it was important to confirm the basic science before evaluating any therapy.

MS is a long-term inflammatory condition of the central nervous system which affects the transfer of messages from the nervous system to the rest of the body.

This is not something patients can expect as a treatment now. This is experimental work and is being tested
A spokeswoman for the MS Society
The Buffalo team, led by Dr Robert Zivadinov, plan to recruit 1,100 patients with MS and 600 other volunteers as controls who are either healthy or have neurological diseases other than MS.
Using Doppler ultrasound, they will scan the patients to see if they can find any blockages within the veins of the neck and brain..

If they can prove Dr Zamboni's theory of "chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency", they say it will change our understanding of MS.

Rewriting science

Margaret Paroski, who is chief medical officer at Kaleida Health, where the Buffalo researchers are based, said the work could overturn prevailing wisdom that the damage in MS is predominantly the result of abnormal immune responses.

"When I was in medical school, we thought peptic ulcer disease was due to stress. We now know that 80% of cases are due to a bacterial infection.
I found the evidence of narrowing - narrowing of the veins just in MS patients
Dr Zamboni
"Dr Zivadinov's work may lead to a whole different way of thinking about MS."
Dr Zamboni, of the University of Ferrara, believes the blockages are the cause rather than the consequence of MS and that they allow iron from the blood to leak into the brain tissue, where it causes damage.

He has performed procedures similar to angioplasty to unblock the veins and get the blood flowing normally again.

He claims this "liberation procedure" can alleviate many of the symptoms of MS and is due to publish his findings in the Journal of Vascular Surgery.
In an interview with CTV News in Canada he said: "I found the evidence of narrowing - narrowing of the veins just in MS patients.

"I'm fully convinced that this is very, very important for people."

Early days

Kevin Lipp, an MS patient from the US, has been symptom-free since being treated by Dr Zamboni.
He said: "It's only been 10 months. If nothing happens in the next two to three years, we'll know it's working."

The BBC has heard anecdotally of other surgeons in Europe testing out the same treatment.
The MS Society said more research was needed to see if this was an avenue that should be explored further.

"This is not something patients can expect as a treatment now. This is experimental work and is being tested. We need to know more about its safety and effectiveness."

Helen Yates, of the MS Resource Centre, said: "There is no doubt that this area warrants a great deal more study.

"This could represent a completely novel approach to MS research which, if proven to be relevant, could be a "sea change" in the understanding of the mechanisms involved in the condition."

A new animal study shows that low levels of magnesium promotes plaque formation in the arteries.  During the study period magnesium deficient animals developed significantly more plaque in their aortas.

The researchers fed rabbits a diet known to produce atherosclerotic plaque..  The thickness of artery walls increased 42% in magnesium lacking animals.  LDL cholesterol was highest in the magnesium lacking rabbits and lowest in the magnesium supplemented rabbits.

This study adds further science to the idea that a diet lacking in magnesium sets the stage for heart disease.

A new study of 3,713 postmenopausal women shows that magnesium is a powerful anti-inflammatory nutrient.  Each 100 mg of magnesium per day was associated with a significant reduction in various inflammatory markers.

Magnesium is the most lacking mineral in the human diet.  This is due primarily to Big Agribusiness farming practices that have stripped our soils of vital minerals needed for human health.  It is complicated by processed diets lacking in magnesium-containing fresh fruits and vegetables.  When you consider that inflammation is behind almost all health problems the consequence of eating a magnesium deficient diet becomes obvious.

The study showed that inflammatory markers such as CRP (C-reactive protein), TNFa (tumor necrosis factor alpha), and IL6 (interleukin 6) were all reduced when magnesium intake was higher.  These are common inflammatory markers that are often elevated with the diseases of aging.

Furthermore, various inflammatory markers relating to the walls of arteries were also reduced when magnesium was adequate.  Inflammation on the lining of the arteries is required for plaque formation.  Reducing such inflammation is highly protective to arterial health.
It is not a stretch to say that if public health officials did nothing other than ensure vitamin D3 and magnesium sufficiency the entire health of a nation would be drastically improved and health care costs would be significantly lower.

The fully ripe banana produces a substance called TNF which has the ability to combat abnormal cells.

So don't be surprised very soon the shop will go out of stock for bananas.

As the banana ripens, it develops dark spots or patches on the skin. The more dark patches it has, the higher will be its' immunity enhancement quality.

Hence the Japanese love bananas for a good reason.

According to a Japanese scientific research, banana contains TNF which has anti-cancer properties. The degree of anti-cancer effect corresponds to the degree of ripeness of the fruit, ie the riper the banana, the better the anti-cancer quality.

In an animal experiment carried out by a professor in Tokyo U comparing the various health benefits of different fruits, using banana, grape, apple, water melon, pineapple, pear and persimmon, it was found that banana gave the best results. It increased the number of white blood cells, enhanced the immunity of the body and produced anti-cancer
substance TNF.

The recommendation is to eat 1 to 2 banana a day to increase your body immunity to diseases like cold, flu and others.

According to the Japanese professor, yellow skin bananas with dark spots on it are 8 times more effective in enhancing the property of white blood cells than the green skin version.

Subject: Acetaminophen linked to asthma in children and adults

Acetaminophen, the pain reliever and fever reducer found in Tylenol and many other over-the-counter as well as prescription drugs (such as Lortab), is often hyped for its supposed safety -- specifically because it doesn't cause stomach upset as often as aspirin. However, in recent years, it has become clear that acetaminophen can cause liver damage and, when combined with alcohol, stomach bleeding. Now comes another warning: researchers have linked the drug's use to an increase in asthma and wheezing in both children and adults.

According to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), asthma affects 16 million adults and nearly 7 million children in the US. It is, in fact, the most common serious chronic
disease of childhood. A respiratory disease of the lungs, it is marked by episodes of inflammation and narrowing of the lower airways in response to asthma triggers which include infectious agents, stress, cigarette smoke, air pollution, dust mites and pollen. A new study just published in the November issue of Chest, the peer-reviewed journal of the American College of Chest Physicians, suggests acetaminophen can also be an important asthma trigger.

Canadian researchers at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, British Columbia, conducted a detailed analysis of 19 clinical studies which contained information linking asthma and/or wheezing to taking acetaminophen. In all, a huge number of research subjects -- 425,140 -- were included in these studies.

The results of the investigation showed the odds of having asthma were significantly raised among people who took the pain reliever. The analysis specifically showed a worrisome
risk of asthma in children who had been given acetaminophen in the year prior to their asthma diagnosis or in the first year of life. And the findings raised another red flag concerning the use of acetaminophen by pregnant women. The study results showed an increase in the risk of asthma and wheezing in children if their mothers had taken the drug prenatally.

Writing in Chest, the researchers called for future studies to further confirm their analysis. They concluded: "The results of our review are consistent with an increase in the risk of asthma and wheezing in both children and adults exposed to acetaminophen."

In addition to skipping acetaminophen, if you or your child suffer from asthma you could benefit from taking
probiotics. As Mike Adams recently reported in NaturalNews (http://www.naturalnews.com/027273_a...), the anti-inflammatory and immune regulating properties of "good" intestinal bacteria can be beneficial for those with asthma.

Probiotics and digestive enzymes prevent colds and flu; research has shown. Probiotics are the healthy bacteria that live in the intestines. Harmful bacteria include those like E. coli (Escherichia col), etc, but there are many bacteria that inhabit our gut that help with our digestion. Now, studies have shown that probiotics also help the immune response by both preventing colds and flu and speeding recovery time.

Probiotics are included in many forms of yogurt, kefir, and other cultured milk products, such as sour cream. Most
probiotics help the immune system prevent diseases such as irritable bowel, diarrhea, and allergies.

A study published in the medical journal Pediatrics was conducted on 326 children in China. They were from the age of three to five years old. The children were given milk twice daily that contained the probiotics Lactobacillus acidophilus by itself, or combined with Bifidobacterium animalis. The children were followed for six months, from November 2005 to May 2006.

The study results were impressive and showed that the one
probiotic was helpful but the benefit was enhanced in the group who took the two probiotics together. The group who took the Lactobacillus contracted had half the number of fevers of the placebo group (53%). They also had 41% less coughs and 28% less runny noses. When they became sick, their illnesses were one third shorter than the placebo group (32%) and they used 68% less antibiotics. They missed 38% less school than the placebo group as well.

The children who took both Lactobacillus acidophilus along with the Bifidobacterium animalis contracted over two thirds less fevers than the placebo group (72%). They had 62% less coughs, and 59% less runny noses. Their duration of illness was nearly HALF of that in the placebo group (48%). They missed slightly less school than the children taking only one probiotic (32% compared to the other group's 38%), but they used 84% less antibiotics compared to the placebo group, surpassing the other group's level of 68% less usage.

The study was double blind and placebo controlled, and it was conducted during the winter cold and flu season. Though the study was funded by a Danish company that makes probiotics, Danisco, similar results have been sited elsewhere.

With the benefits from probiotics proven in other areas of digestive
health and improved immune function, there is reason to add probiotics to a healthy diet regime year-round.

** How this Drink Could Reduce Hepatitis C Risk

-- by Jeff Jurmain, MA

Drinking at least three cups of coffee per day is linked to a lower
risk for progression of chronic hepatitis C, according to a new,
large study in a recent issue of "Hepatology."

The new study is the first to address the link between liver
disease progression related to hepatitis C and coffee intake. And
it is a pertinent subject; given the large number of people
affected by hepatitis C virus, it is important to identify which
risk factors contribute to liver disease. More importantly: which
risk factors can be affected by each of us.

The new study says that patients with high coffee intake had a
lower risk of disease progression. The study consisted of 766
people in a long-term trial who had hepatitis Crelated liver
disease. Their drug treatment failed to achieve any sustained
benefits.

In four years of follow-up, researchers assessed the situation
every three months. They looked at the state of the liver in many
different ways. Any way they sliced it, they arrived at the same
conclusion: regular coffee consumption was linked with less
disease progression. This held true even after the researchers
took alcohol intake and cigarette smoking into consideration.
The progression reduced to the greatest extent with the more
coffee people drank. They tested up to three or more cups a day.

There was no word on whether people were drinking decaf or
caffeinated coffee, or if the brewing methods of the coffee had
any impact. There was word on green and black tea, though, and
they had no similar effect. Coffee wins, in this case.

Hepatitis C is a viral infection that attacks the liver and causes
inflammation. Most people infected with the hepatitis C virus
have no symptoms and don't actually know they have it until
medical tests reveal liver damage years and years later. It is
passed from person to person via contaminated blood.

A recent study gauged the prevalence of hepatitis C in the U.S.
It concluded that many Americans are infected, most born
between 1945 and 1964. Among the risk factors were having 20
or more lifetime sexual partners, or having a blood transfusion
prior to 1992.

Regardless of however one contracted the infection, this is one
good study showing that people have some control over the
disease simply by sipping coffee each day

Medical Director of Switzerland’s Paracelsus Clinic Takes Stand on Hazards of Electromagnetic Pollution - ‘Electromagnetic Load’ a Hidden Factor in Many Illnesses

Thomas M. Rau, MD, Medical Director of the Paracelsus Clinic

February 10th, 2009. Dr. Thomas Rau, Medical Director of the world renowned Paracelsus Clinic in Lustmühle, Switzerland says he is convinced ‘electromagnetic loads’ lead to cancer, concentration problems, ADD, tinnitus, migraines, insomnia, arrhythmia, Parkinson’s and even back pain. At Paracelsus (www.paracelsus.ch), cancer patients are now routinely educated in electromagnetic field remediation strategies and inspectors from the Geopathological Institute of Switzerland are sent to patients’ homes to assess electromagnetic field exposures.

Of note, Dr. Rau says a strategy to consider for those experiencing ‘electrical sensitivity’ symptoms is to remove the electromagnetic ‘hot spot’ in the head created by the presence of metal fillings. Concern is thus not only for the ‘neurotoxic’ aspect of mercury in fillings, an increasingly understood hazard, but because fillings themselves act as antennas in the presence of electromagnetic fields from cell phones and cell towers, wi-fi networks, portable phones, and other sources of radiofrequency radiation.

Rau says the removal of dental fillings can be an important early step in reducing electrical sensitivity, allowing some people to live in homes they otherwise could not tolerate.

Cultures have shown beneficial bacteria grows more slowly in the presence of electromagnetic fields, says Rau, allowing pathological organisms to dominate. Thus, a strategy with electrically sensitive patients, or with those facing chronic conditions, is the aggressive supplementation with probiotics and other Biological Medicine approaches to balance intestinal flora. Many people with chronic infections likely linked to EMF exposures, such as Lyme Disease, are symptom- free after an aggressive microorganism rebalancing program.

Electrical sensitivity—originally known as radio wave sickness—is a sometimes debilitating experience created by these and other disregulating effects of electromagnetic fields. Linked to many acute and chronic illness conditions, electrical sensitivity is a serious emerging public health issue globally and a subject in which most doctors have no training.

A Petition to Congress, created by  www.ElectromagneticHealth.org is now circulating on the internet, requesting Congress 1) mandate the FCC lower exposure guidelines to reflect the large body of science showing biological effects at exposures much lower than current standards, 2) repeal Section 704 of the Telecommunications Act of 1996, which rescinded state and local governments right to resist towers on health or environmental grounds, 3) stop the roll out of the Wi-Max network until Congress better understands the potential health consequences, and 4) accommodate citizens unable to function adequately in high EMF environments, including forbidding cell towers on school properties.

Exposing children in schools to radiation, known to impair brain function and learning, Rau describes as “criminal”. He says, “It is unethical to expose children to electromagnetic load in this way. We know that power stations for electromagnetic waves like mobile phones are hurting the brains of children, so to put such stations into schools is really…very, very, very bad. Rau says, the question is, “Does the school, or does the society, really want to have intelligent, well-educated children, or not?” He says, “If you install mobile phone towers, which radiate to the children, their intelligence, their brain capacity, decreases. You will have more ADD children, you will have less function of the brain, which in the long term reflects on the intelligence of the children, of the possibility to really teach children, and in the long term, the more this overcomes society, the more we will have dumb children.”

The reality of the health consequences of electromagnetic radiation eventually will have to be faced, and this will only happen with active pressure on Congress. It is estimated that 3-8% of populations in developed countries experience serious electrohypersensitivity symptoms today, and 35% experience mild symptoms. With increasing electromagnetic field exposures, these numbers, along with the suffering involved for people who are impacted, and the health care costs involved, are bound to go up.

Listen to Dr. Rau Interview.

Ashwaganda is a popular Aryuvedic herb with traditional uses for anxiety, nervousness, depression and insomnia,  Several new studies help to prove the effectiveness of the traditional use of ashwaganda in support of your nervous system’s health.
A randomized trial showed that ashwaganda taken at the dose of 300 mg. twice per day was highly effective at reducing anxiety over a 12 week period.  Significant benefits were also observed in mental health, concentration, fatigue, social functioning, vitality, and overall quality of life.

In an animal experiment a potent neurotoxin that produces such brain damage that it causes Huntington’s disease was injected.  The rats given ashwaganda experienced a significant reduction in nerve decline.  The researchers showed that ashwaganda maintained antioxidant function in the brain as well as protecting the mitocondria of brain cells so that they could keep producing energy normally.

Too much stress, especially when uncomfortable anxious or nervous feelings are felt too often, is a sign of wear and tear top nerves that is sure to speed brain aging and other nerve-related problems.  Ashwaganda is an herb that may be able to help.

LIES, DAMNED LIES AND STATISTICS

How is a citizen and consumer to make sense of it?

Are the numbers of H1N1 infections really rising?
Is the vaccine really safe?
Is the vaccine right for me? For my children?
What if I’m pregnant and my doctor says it’s safe?
Are vaccine reactions making the news?

Below, is information that NJCVC and Life Health Choices would like to share with you on the unanswered questions. As you will see, our trusted health authorities fail miserably at keeping us up-to-date on the truth.

WHAT THEY TELL US:

Each day the media reports additional cases of H1N1 infections and rising death tolls attributed to the pandemic disease.

WHAT THEY DON’T TELL US:

In July of 2009, the World Health Organization issued a press release stating that it will no longer release the global table of H1N1 infections because it is “extremely difficult, if not impossible” to determine swine flu cases in laboratory testing. “Even in countries with limited laboratory capacities, WHO recommends that the initial virological assessment is followed by the testing of at least 10 samples per week in order to confirm that disease activity is due to the pandemic virus and to monitor changes in the virus that may be important for case management and vaccine development.”

The Centers for Disease Control issued a similar statement on October 2, 2009. “Influenza diagnosis will not distinguish between infection with seasonal influenza vs. infection with A-H1N1. Furthermore, it will not be confirming influenza infections with a diagnostic test, but rather, will rely upon the clinician’s judgement to determine flu infection if the patient presents with flu-like symptoms.”

The nasal spray vaccine by MedImmune has demonstrated evidence in clinical trials of shedding the live virus for 3-21 days post-vaccination. Vaccinating large populations, especially school children, with the live nasal-spray vaccine will cause a rise in the number of those infected.

NJCVC-LHC ASKS:

Then, how are health officials “confirming” and media outlets “reporting” the numbers of actual swine flu cases and swine flu-related deaths if they are no longer testing nor distinguishing between seasonal flu, swine flu, rhinovirus and pneumonia? And will these arbitrary and inflated figures then be used as statistics to drive future vaccination programs?

How can a public health initiative aimed at reducing the spread of H1N1 infections, engage in a vaccination program (administration by live-virus nasal spray) that has been clinically demonstrated to increase the actual rate of infection?

WHAT THEY TELL US:

Pregnant woman have been identified as a targeted risk group for H1N1 and seasonal influenza, therefore, they are urged to get the vaccines. Health officials and doctors claim the influenza vaccines are safe for pregnant women.

WHAT THEY DON’T TELL US:

Influenza vaccines are Category C pharmaceuticals which means that no animal or human studies have been conducted for safety. Influenza vaccines have not been tested on pregnant women. Each and every influenza vaccine maker states, in their product literature, the following:

It is not known if the vaccine will cause fetal harm when injected into a pregnant woman.

It is not known if the vaccine will impair fertility or affect reproductive capacity.

It is not known if the vaccine is excreted in human milk.

Influenza vaccines should not be administered in the first trimester of pregnancy due to risk of spontaneous abortion (miscarriage) .

NJCVC-LHC ASKS:

How has the safety of the influenza vaccines been determined if no studies were conducted to test for safety? Let’s hear from the pregnant women themselves on the alleged safety of influenza vaccines for pregnant women: (Read below or click HERE).

E.B., Washington; “I was so excited to be pregnant after trying for a year... Everything was going great. Last Monday, I got the H1N1 vaccine thimerosal reduced. On Tuesday morning I started cramping and on Wednesday I started bleeding heavily... My doctor pushed it... there have been many miscarriages after the H1N1 but they haven’t been reported...”

Tayla08: “A friend of a friend just had a miscarriage 2-3 days after getting the shot. She was 7 weeks.”

90707: “ I recently miscarried as well and was due in June. I had a healthy heartbeat at 6 weeks then at 7.5 weeks my son got the H1N1 mist vaccine which has live vaccine in it. The nurse said to be careful because it could technically spread if he rubbed his nose and touched a surface etc. The next night I miscarried and 5 days later I was diagnosed with H1N1.”

Jo: “I got the flu vaccine (regular not H1N1) at 8 weeks pregnant. Three days later I miscarried. I am not going to get the H1N1.”

Regrets: “I got both vaccines on Thursday. I was 9 weeks pregnant. I miscarried on Sunday. I was told by several doctors to get these vaccines.”

(Sad face icon): “ I work in a hospital-like setting and was told ‘the benefits outweigh the risks.’ 1 a.m. I got the vaccine. 3 a.m. I started bleeding and cramping, 3 p.m. miscarried, you decide.”

Sue: “I had the H1N1 vaccination and 24 hours later had a miscarriage.”

Linda H: “My daughter in law was 10 weeks pregnant and had the H1N1 on Friday. That night she miscarried.”

So Sorry: “I was 6 weeks along and got it and started cramping and miscarried. I already had two healthy pregnancies and never miscarried or had any problems.”

Connie: “I also received the H1N1 vaccination on October 22nd, 2009 and went into labor on October 25th, at 16 weeks pregnant.... On October 28th my water broke and then on October 29th, I delivered a stillborn baby boy...”

Sioux Falls, South Dakota: “I received the H1N1 vaccine on October 16th and started experiencing cramping on the 22nd. I was nearly 17 weeks pregnant and gave birth to a stillborn baby boy on the 23rd.... the first thing I suspected was the H1N1 vaccine.”

Marina R: “I recently got the H1N1 vaccine and miscarried 3 days later.”

Kathy-sd: “I am from a town of 2000 in SD, there are several women pregnant... Four of us got the H1N1 vaccine 2 weeks ago and one by one each of us started to have pre-term contractions.. We are all due in Nov and Dec so we are further along than most of the people who lost their babies.”

Ashley: “Not only myself but I know someone that within 4 days of getting the shot we both miscarried. I was only 6 weeks but she was 4 months along.”

Time Machine: “I got a flu shot in pregnancy, developed... strange symptoms immediately. .. began bleeding and miscarried by 11 weeks.”

AlinafromOz: “I had the normal Flu shot and I had a miscarriage at 8 weeks.”

WHAT THEY TELL US:

Time and again we hear that the H1N1 vaccine is perfectly safe; that’s it’s made just like the regular flu shot (which is not encouraging) . Health officials want school children to get the vaccines in mass vaccination clinics.

WHAT THEY DON’T TELL US:

No flu vaccine has ever been tested for safety in simultaneous administration with other vaccines, i.e. childhood vaccines.

The clinical trials for safety and effectiveness in children under two years old involved only 19 subjects and adverse reactions were "solicited" for only 3 days post-vaccination.

Underlying health conditions can put an individual at a disproportionate risk for adverse reactions to vaccination such as giving live influenza virus vaccines to asthmatics or those with wheezing.

NJCVC-LHC ASKS:

What is the definition of “SAFETY” where vaccines are concerned? The following news releases beg a clearer understanding of the acceptable level of “vaccine safety.” Safety meaning there is an acceptable number of those who will serve as collateral damage for a program?
