Richard, the 60 year old autistic man that I take care of is
growing/changing once again. He has been on Dr. Stephen Lewis's AIM
program for about six months now, and with each passing month, he is
improving.
First, he moved into his own apartment. About a month ago, I noticed
that he is no longer teriffied of the hot stove. So, we thought we
would take steps to start teaching him how to cook and prepare his
own meals. With the oversight of staff members, he is cooking all of
his meals now and with each passing week, getting more proficient.
He still is mad about it, because he would rather be 'waited on,' but
he is doing it.
One afternoon, when the caretaker arrived at his apartment last week,
he had started a load of laundry on his own. Monumental!
Parents, this AIM program is outside the box, it is weird, it is hard
to understand. But WHO CARES if it works, if it helps our autistic
children?? It is working wonderfully for Richard and for others who
I know who have their children on the AIM program. It is free, it is
done without appointments. Could not be easier.
If you want the email address / phone number for this program, let me
know.
Oh, and I forgot something that he did this week. He called me and
asked how my day was! I was astounded, silent, so he asked again,
then listened to the answer. Wow. He has never asked how I was,
ever, in the 20 years that I have known him, it has always been a
list of what I can do for him!
