Dear George,

Satvik philosophy for your appreciation, as also given in our website.

With good wishes from Himalayas,

Murli Shukla

The satvik philosophy

Lord Shree Krishna in the 48th verse of chapter 2 of Shri Bhagwad Geeta says : :

Bhagavad geeta chapter2 shloke 48

yoga-sthah kuru karmani sangam tyaktva dhananjaya,
siddhy assiddhyoh samo bhutva samatvam yoga ucyate.

Leaving aside prejudices, work with equanimity, irrespective of failure or success.
This equanimity is known as Yoga.

Lord Shree Krishna in the 17th verse of chapter 6 of Shri Bhagwad Geeta says :

Bhagwad Gita verse 16

yukta-ahara-viharasya yukta-cheshtasy karmasu,
yukta-svapana-avabodhasya yogo bhavati dukha-ha

Equanimity, the source of peace and happiness, can be achieved only by one who manages to eat, live; work, rest; sleep, stay awake; to the extent appropriate.

Today a person not only is leads a sedentary lifestyle, but at the same time has to handle a lot of mental stimulation on account of computer work and tv. Further traffic, noise and air pollution contribute to worsen his already frayed nerves.

when he looks for a break, it often is a hectic holiday. A lot of sightseeing, rich and oily meals. As a result after a typical holiday, he is worse off.

Satvik holiday works to allow for rest for the mind and corrective healing activity for the body by a combination of :

  1. A relaxed atmosphere.
  2. Set amidst natural surroundings.
  3. Tasty, nutritious, healthy vegetarian meals in a beautiful ethnic ambience.
  4. Yogasanas customized to an individual under the expert guidance of Pulak Ranjan Shukla, founder of the Satvik concept, who has been a yoga and vedic scholar since 1979; This approach helps in freeing the blocked energy channels and effectively combats health problems.
  5. Ayurvedic or acupressure massages to relax the person.

After a week of satvik holiday a person gets back with a renewed energy level and positivity.

The Satvik philosophy- Each living being is in constant search of happiness as the divine spirit present in the living being is bliss itself.

To move towards the supreme bliss, one has to transcend the satisfaction derived from limited and small joys, such as derived from food, physical and material comforts. This happens when a person moves to create balance in himself. Yoga which has been defined by Shree Krishna as equanimity (2.48, SBG). comes to one who gets his physical, mental and emotional health in order.

Once a person starts regaining the balance the satvik nature in him comes into prominence, dominating the rajsik and tamsik properties in him. The Vedic philosophy believes that all life has come from a disturbance of equilibrium of three aspects of nature; Satvik as symbolized by calmness, wisdom and good nature; Rajsik as symbolized by restlessness, impatience and intolerance; Tamsik as symbolized by laziness, ignorance and foolhardiness.

In any living being these three aspects exist in varying proportions. A person is thought of Satvik, Rajsik, or Tamsik depending on which aspect is dominant in him.

For health and peace a person needs a healthy body and rested mind. In the animal kingdom species living in nature freely, do not fall prey to ill health. Man does. This is on account of a choice he has of not living by instinct. By ignorance he chooses to eat foods which disagree with his body constitution. He mentally worries and carries emotional baggage.

As a result a man's energy channels get blocked. They in turn cause illness and disease. Indigestion is not only physical, but mental as well, when a man cannot digest another's views and orders. Emotional indigestion occurs when negative emotions get strong.

The Satvik concept handles this situation by a combination of:

  1. ABC- Analysis of body constitution, based on ayurvedic guidelines. This helps in identifying the ratio of the five principal elements in a person. Using foods which increase the elements which are less and reducing foods which can increase the elements in excess. An individualized diet guide based on the person's body constitution modified in varying seasons and climates.
  2. Yogic postures and breathing techniques which are customsed to an individual so that he can free the blocked energy channels. The yogis believe that there are 72,000 energy channels in the body. They get blocked because of physical, mental and emotional indigestion. While prakruti and ritu based food ( see above) can correct the physical indigestion and prevent it, the mental and emotional indigestion require the 2nd approach.
  3. Ayurvedic practices of oiling the body with regard to the varying seasons and individual body constitutions. Knowledge and practice of this helps a person effectively combat the heat in summers and cold in winters as also the dryness, aches and pains of the body.

If one closely analyses the ultimate objective being pursued, one would find that each person is looking for a state of undisturbed peace and happiness.
