The Healthy Lifestyles Clinic at San Francisco General Hospital is
currently recruiting new student volunteers. This clinic is devoted to
helping overweight children and their families develop healthy eating
and exercise habits. The majority of patients are from under-served
areas of San Francisco, where unsafe neighborhoods limit outdoor
activities and financial concerns limit healthy food choices. The
student volunteers work closely with the patients, and with the doctor
running the clinic.
Benefits:
Make a positive impact on the health of individual children
Receive informal education on the medical implications of childhood obesity
Interact and form relationships with medical professionals, medical students
Have great opportunity for patient contact
Requirements:
Must be available on the second and fourth Thursday of each month,
from 1-5pm, and ideally one Saturday each month from 12-2pm. Clinic
operation is very dependent on the work of the volunteers, high level
of commitment to scheduled clinic dates is desired.
Ability to speak Spanish strongly preferred as the majority of the
patients come from Spanish speaking households.
Must enjoy working with children, and be able to maintain positive
attitude while encouraging them to reach their goals. No prior
knowledge of nutrition is required, but volunteers must be interested
in learning basic information. Creativity is needed to help the
children apply this information to find ways around barriers to
healthy eating and exercise.
