Dear Premed Students:
Below is the latest newsletter from oldpremeds.org, a nonprofit whose
mission is to assist and advise nontraditional premeds on how to
successfully prepare, apply and succeed in both medical schools and
residency training programs. The newsletter can also be found by

Summer and Premed/Medical Education
August is no longer the lazy month of summer it once was. It
is when many things begin. In some ways, it is even more
intense than the rest of the year. Many students jump from
the 15 week spring semester into 5-week intensive courses
trying to catch up on needed perquisites. Some schools offer
up to 3 summer sessions that go thru to the end of August.
In the past, many schools would not begin the fall term until
after Labor Day but now most universities, colleges, postbacc
programs, and medical schools begin by the end of August.
The last waves of prospective students applying for the
medical school class of 2009 are taking the August and
September MCATs. Secondary applications are being
completed and hopes for interview by the Admissions
Committee begins to loom large in the thoughts of these
applicants.
Some medical schools have even earlier start dates for first
and second year students. Many of the new students entering
the class of 2008 have already begun orientation by the
second week of August. Third and fourth year students have
no such luxury, with most beginning their academic year by
July 1st they start clinical rotations in various clerkships.
Summer Reading In Medical Education
With the dog days of August upon us, even summer reading
has an educational theme for premeds, medical students, &
physicians, who may find these articles of interest.
