Dear Pre-Health Students:
Silver Avenue Health Center is looking for a Cantonese speaking
volunteer to help during their Orientation Clinic on Mondays from
1-5pm. This opportunity is ideal for a candidate interested in direct
patient interaction.
Volunteers would help take in new patients, complete medical history
forms and learn advocacy for the clients. In addition, volunteers
would be able to see the diverse issues that are potential barriers to
receiving health care and get a broad view of the challenges to
medical providers in beginning or establishing care for folks with
diverse language issues.
Silver Avenue Health Center, located at 1525 Silver Ave, SF 94134,
serves the Southeast quadrant of San Francisco. It is one of the City
and County of SF health centers. Their clients are 40% Spanish
Speaking, 20% Cantonese Speaking, 20% Asian speaking
English/Tagalog/or other Pacific Islander languages. About 10 % are
African American and the rest are Caucasian. Nearly all new patients
are eligible for some form of medical benefits through Family
Planning, Cancer Detection Program, Healthy San Francisco, San
Francisco Health Plan, MediCal, Blue Cross MediCal, etc.
