This is a very exciting time for the Creighton University School of Medicine. On June 30, 2009, we announced a joint venture with St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix, AZ that has created a new clinical campus for Creighton…. Creighton University School of Medicine at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center. The new clinical campus allows us to increase our class size from 126 to 152, and ensures our students continue to receive an excellent and robust clinical experience. These new changes will be instituted with the Fall 2010 first year class.
When students within the class reach their third year (in the fall of 2012), 42 students will have the opportunity to complete their clinical experience at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix, while 110 will complete their experience in Omaha. Both groups will have the opportunity to do month long rotations at either campus; however they will have one primary clinical campus to call home.
Creighton feels very fortunate to be partnering with St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center. St. Joseph’s is an outstanding facility with over 740 licensed beds. Founded in 1895 by the Sisters of Mercy, it is the oldest hospital in Phoenix, and the largest hospital in the state of Arizona. St. Joseph’s is the home of the Barrow Neurological Institute which is one of the top 10 neuroscience centers in the country. It also hosts the Children’s Health Center which is the second largest provider of comprehensive pediatric services in Arizona.
Like Creighton, St. Joseph’s has been in the medical education business for many years. Each year over 240 medical students from around the country complete rotations at St. Joseph’s. In addition, St. Joseph’s has a strong graduate medical program that provides training for over 160 medical residents in 13 clinical specialties. For over four years now Creighton medical students have completed rotations at St. Joseph’s during their third and fourth years. St. Joseph’s has proven to be a great site for clinical instruction, and we are excited to have the opportunity to expand this relationship.
I encourage you to learn about St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center… Creighton University School of Medicine’s new partner. You can become acquainted with St. Joseph’s and our new program by reviewing the following WebPages:

Creighton is thrilled to have the ability to offer our students such a unique experience. The combination of two hospitals, Creighton University Medical Center and St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center, ensures that our students will continue to have access to a very robust, and more importantly, diverse patient base. We believe these two factors are essential pieces for us to be able to prepare our students to become agents of change within healthcare.
Please be assured that the Jesuit, Catholic tradition of service and belief in a values-centered education will continue to be maintained at both clinical training sites. The Jesuit ideal of “Women and Men With and For Others” is alive and well at Creighton. Partnering with St. Joseph’s allows us to extend and enhance this ideal for our students.
