Hi Marin
Most BC pills/shots are sometimes the cause of migraines...
all I know is that because my hormones are not
fluctuating up and down anymore (been on depo since feb 2004)
because of not having a monthly period...
my migraines have stopped... !!!!!!!!!!!!!
My doctor said that the menstrual migraines are sometimes the
worst to try and treat because nothing really helps them...
and I am not just talking a headache or mild discomfort that
2 Advil will cure...
I mean a full blown migraine that will last for almost a week...
sometimes 2~
I am sure you know what I am talking about!
I was spending $17.00 a pill on my prescriptions...
sometimes taking 2-3 pills over a few days.
This shot has been a godsend for me!!
My only problem is that it has enhanced my already oily skin.
I am actually going to see my doc next week to see if I can
get something to combat the acne that has flared up since getting the
shot....36 years old and still worrying about this stuff!
Sometimes the good comes with the bad....a few zits here and
there is fine with me if as long as my brain doesn't feel like it
is gong to explode anymore!
When I did get my 1st shot however, I remember my doctor saying that
I might have a migraine or headache the 1st time...and I remember I
did...but it was cured by 2 Advil's...or I think 2 Alieve's...
headache free since Feb 2004~
As far as the weight gain...my doctor told me that there isn't really
any difference in what we took orally as a pill to what is in the
shot...I have noticed sometimes I feel bloated when I eat junk and
don't drink enough water a day...but as long as your not stuffing
your face with crap...the pounds don't just automatically jump onto
your butt!
Good luck!

I haven't experienced diziness or a noticable decrease in sex drive.
I do find that the less sexually active I am, the lower my drive is.
Maybe you and your SO can focus on taking time to be more sexual. It
might take some more effort on his part to get the fire going :)
I also gained about 30 lbs on depo That was my wakeup call. I was too
skinny before starting depo so I wasn't concerned about weight gain,
I just continued my poor eating habits and sedentary lifestyle. I
have been exercising (30 min of cardio 5-6 days a week and weight
training and pilates 3 days a week) and doing Weight Watchers and I
have lost 13lbs. I want to lose 3-5 more lbs and then I will be back
at my "ideal" weight. So the weight *is* manageable.

I LOVE the depo shot. I am the biggest advocate for it. I
absolutely LOVE not getting my period but I am uncertain now.
I have been on the shot for 3 years now. I gained a lot of weight,
and wanted to see if it was a result of the shot, so I stopped for 6
mos. I found that it most likely was a result, but during that
time, my periods began to return more heavily, and I forgot just how
painful a period could be -and decided to go back on depo.
I have also had a slight decrease in sex drive since I have been on
it. It has seemed to become worse recently. I have also been very
dizzy for no reason. I have never been dizzy in my entire life. My
doctor has no explanation for it. Does anyone have something
similar?
I am now considering stopping the shot. I am really starting to
notice the GIANT weight gain. THe only positive thing is that my
periods (if I have them) are so light and it is so wonderful. I am
not sure that it outweighs the weight gain (which is almost 30 lbs
now) and the dizziness, and the other minor side effects that I
believe are a result.
I don't know what to do, and that time is coming in a few days,
where I have to make my decision, because my next round is due. I
am frustrated with the side effects, but to think that i have to go
back to a full period might even be worse. - can you believe that I
forgot what it was like to get a period!! how wonderful!
Does anyone have any advice? How do I get a sex drive back, is the
diziness from the shot and has anyone else had significant weight
gain?
Please help
Debbie
from what my doctors have told me yourr bones can get very weak on the depo shot
they say to take calcium every day or get some kinda calcium intake due to that
if u dont want the bones of a 60 yr old by the time ur 30... im sorry to hear
about your broken leg i wish they had this website long ago so other people can
share and tell their stories or what they have heard about the depo shot i hope
u have a quick recovery

i was very happy on depo and just went off of it about

loved depo, it was so great to go without periods for
almost 10 years.
however three weeks ago i was taking out some trash
and fell down the back stairs...about 6 stairs...and
broke my leg severely. my fibula snapped and broke
through the skin. the tibia is also broken. i have a
steel rod and pins in my leg and a 15-lb cast.
the doctors were confused as to why a short fall
resulted in such a horrible (extremely painful) break.
anyway, no one can really say, but i have to wonder if
depo is at least partially to blame. i was good about
taking calcium at first, but i was too lazy later on,
and i could no longer digest dairy.
if anyone had a similar experience, please share. i am
clumsy, it's true, and it was an accident. but i
wonder if my bones are extremely weak due to the
prolonged depo shots.

I was on Depo Prevera for eight years and did not have any side
effects to my knowledge or were bad enough to even discuss. I too
have read the horror stories that some women went through and I
truely sympathize with them. The thing is though, with EVERY
medication, there is some kind of side effect. If this is not the
right one for you, get off it and try another. I believe it is good
to do research before trying something and then decide of you want
to take the chance and risk those side effects. Grant it, when I
first started in '95, all I had to read was the little pamphlet from
the doctor's office. There was no site at that time where you could
go and find out information. Reading some of the stories would have
definately made me think twice about using it. I am now off and
trying other methods of birth control. Not because of the stories,
but just because I thought eight years was long enough and my body
needed a break. I am glad to find a site where there are women who
did not have horror stories-I was starting to feel guilty about not
having any complications-not that I would want any. Thank you for
this site.

Hi, I know I'm late on this but I'm curious...I have a
thyroid problem and I'm 33, both of which inhibit
weight loss...but I have had a very physical job for
about 4 mos. where all I do is walk for 3 hours a day
and lift things..and I've noticed a difference in
muscle tone, but no weight loss AT ALL, which could be
due to my thyroid but now I'm wondering. Any thoughts?

I have lost weight on DEPO...
But still have the occasional bloated feeling.
I try to drink at least 8 glasses of water a
day and that seems to help!
I eat the same as I did before but I have cutback
on my Carb intake (NO NOT ATKINS!!!)
...(I just went from eating 4 slices of bread a day to 2)
and I really watch the portion sizes on my plate.
I don't do the heaping globs of food or the second servings...
maybe because I am worried about the possible weight gain with
Depo...but if it makes me a healthier eater...why not!!
The only side effect I have noticed now in the 12 weeks is
oily oily skin...only on my face. If I can get that under control...
this product is almost perfect. My overwhelming migraines have gone
away...and the weird crying weeping...moodiness I was having on my
Diane-35 pill left almost immediately after switching to DEPO.
Good luck... weight loss is possible...but don't freak out about it.
Like my doctor told me...you are taking almost the same form of
drugs in the oral pill that you are with the shot...if you didn't
gain 40 pounds on the pill..chances are you won't on depo...
and if you feel you are extra hungry ..or depo makes you
hungrier....drink water...leave the house...go for a walk...
only you can stop the food from going into your mouth.
cheers!

Hi all, I'm new here. I've been on Depo almost 2 years now. When I
first started depo I was aboout 105 lbs @ 5'3 and under my normal
weight by about 10 lbs. Since then I've gone up to 133. I'm not
overweight, but I have been trying to lose weight and having no
success. I ate the way I normally did and didn't exercise and gained
the weight. The past several months I have been doing aerobic
exercise 3-4 times a week, with no weight loss. For the past month
I've increased my workouts to include strength training and reduced
my calorie intake...no noticeable weight loss. IT may be too soon
though.
I love depo, the only side effects I have is the weight gain and a
slight increase in acne. I just want to go back to my normal weight
of 115-120 :) I'm looking for some encouragement and success stories
from other ladies here.
Thanks,
Dianna
my doctors tell me it's because of increased appetite.
i have been on it for 8 years and i know now how to
monitor my appetite...it seems to increase when i'm
close to a shot, and then decrease substantially after
i get it. however, i have been having trouble losing
weight (i have thyroid problems too) and i'm wondering
if depo has anything to do with it...otherwise i love
it! gotta go off soon though to try for a baby ):

Hi All!
OK
I did the wrong thing...I read a billion and a half web sites
on the NEGATIVE side effects on this drug...
in any case...I am three weeks into my shot.
what I have not seen on ANY website is the answer to this question
WHAT MAKES US GAIN THE WEIGHT?
is it something in the drug...??
is it the drug that makes us hungry and eat more?
If I eat the same as I did before the drug...with I all of
a sudden gain 40 pounds in a month.
If I eat nothing...will I still gain 30?
What is the cause?
thanks in advance!
Hi all!
I'm a new member here. I'm 21 and live in canada =) I've been on
depo for about 2 years, and I am always looking new information about
birth control. I do have a group if anyone is interested ;)
http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/depoproveramoderated/
I hope to meet some new friends here!
heya..
i started on depo about six months ago and so far it's working pretty
good.
99% safe...hell yeah!
:)
the only thing i've noticed though is that it's kinda tricky if you
have depression because it kinda messes up your saratonin levels. or
something like that anyway.
there's also the irregular bleeding, sometimes heavy, sometimes after
sex, and sometimes just spotting but it gets better the longer you're
on it.
i didn't have much problem with my sex drive or anything nor did i
have any problems with snacking.
can't think of anything else except that it's pretty good.
oh, one last drawback is that the company that distributes it here in
florida have just started to only give it to the pharmacies which is
fine and dandy except you have to pick up your medicine at the
pharmacy (about 66 dollars) then go back to the doctors to have them
give you the shot( another 35). it used to only be 65 for the whole
thing but oh well.
hope you guys are having a good one.
hugs,
rach

PLEASE email me any experiences of yourself, or other people that you
know, that have stopped Depo after a while of taking it. I have been
on it for about 5 years. I dont have the reactions of horror stories
that some people have. But, I have to stop getting it because of
insurance and a couple other issues. Not having a period was so good,
I am worried about how it may be for the next few months-ANY ADVICE
PLEASE!! Email me at starprncss@....
Howdy! This is my first time posting... I'm 18 years old and have
just started on Depo. I got my first shot last Tuesday, the 25th of
November. My boyfriend and I have been fully monogamous for months
and wanted an alternative to condoms. Well, this seemed like the
perfect idea after researching the options, since he was iffy about
giving up his security in a barrier method. I figured it was perfect
because the only bad experience I had on the pill was weight gain,
but most of it probably could've been prevented with a better diet.
This Friday during our weekend together, it started out fine... I
was happy to see him and got aroused as I always do, lubrication was
fine... but over the course of the weekend, things seemed to go
downhill. After the first time without condoms, my vagina felt
irritated, sore, and tender. I wasn't sure whether to attribute this
to the new friction or Depo. That alone made sex rather undesirable
to me after that, and gradually progressed to a point where I wasn't
enjoying it by Sunday. We decided to take the week off and try again
the next weekend.
I also noticed that often times, I just didn't want sex. It's part
of my personality; I get easily aroused and am usually the one to
initiate these things. It made me depressed to know that even though
he was trying his best, I couldn't enjoy the act and sometimes
couldn't even get aroused to begin with.
My question here is: when did people, if at all, start experiencing
their first side effects - specifically, loss of sexual appetite?
And/or depression? I decided that I'm going to give it the remainder
of the three months to decide whether I'm going to stay on Depo or
not, depending on the side effects. Luckily, my boyfriend has been
amazingly supportive in whatever I decide to do and very active in
finding information for me if I needed it. I'm curious to hear about
other peoples' experiences with this. I feel like Depo could
potentially be the option for me, but I don't want to give up too
soon.
I have a question; I am about to recive my third shot and recently I
have started to bleed really bad, worse than I have ever since being
on the shot. And it has been going on for about 2 weeks and I was
just wondering if this is something to worry about or not. Thank
you!! Angie!
Anginem4462@...
i am a smoker and have been on depo for about 7 years,
recently i had a bout with high blood pressure and my
doctor ended up taking me off of depo for a few months
to see if that (in addition to smoking) was
responsible for the increased blood pressure. it was
definitely miserable, having sporadic menstrual cycles
after 7 years of none, and i just felt different, i
don't know if other people get that feeling when they
need another shot, but i don't really have to refer to
a calender, something inside me knows. regardless,
it did nothing to bring my blood pressure down and
went back to depo. A few months later, I stopped
working and went back to school full time to get my
graduate degree. surprisingly, my blood pressure has
dropped dramatically, and is not even close to a
concern. the point is, the doctor was certain that
the 'side effect' was the result of the combination of
my smoking habits and the depo injection when in
reality, i was just work. i know that you shouldn't
smoke, but i think that may just be an excuse, doctors
are so willing to blame all medical ailments on
smoking and i am not sure that it is always the case.

I noticed that I didn't gain weight of any accord
other than my own hunger. It seems to come in
stages...I'm much more hungry at the end of my 3-month
shot cycle, and much less so right after I get the
shot. In fact my appetite just goes away almost
completely right after a shot.

I loved Depro Provera. However, I found out the hard way that if
you suffer from depression, taking the shots can make your
depression ten times worse. Also, you can lose a certain percentage
of bone mass a year.

Those who have, can you tell me a little about your experience? I'm
curious about whether the drug ITSELF makes you gain weight, or if it
affects your metabolism, OR if it simply makes you more tired/hungry.
Thanks all!

Hi Angela,
I was on Depo, not anymore though. I had spotting for the duration of the first
shot. It went away when I got my second shot. I would get my period when I was
due for the next shot. My doctor said that was normal. Hope that helps.

Hi everyone. I'm new to the group. My name is Angela. I was on Depo
several yrs. ago, and loved it! I had a baby last year and decided to
go back on it. The only problem I'm having now is alot of spotting
between periods. I didn't even have periods the first go around. So,
my question is, "Does anyone else having spotting?"
