Typically, the shot is given during the menstrual period to keep ovulation from
occuring again. the high dose of progesterone from the depo basically keeps
the egg from developing in the ovary and being released for fertilization. if
you get your shot a couple weeks after your period, you would definitely want
to use a back-up method for seven days, in case you have already ovulated at
that point.
